NEET Qualifying Cutoff Trend: 2017–2026 (Year-wise Official Data)

• Easy paper years (2020, 2023 & 2024): In these years the cutoff value has been raised up to 137-162 in general section because of the increase in number of candidates who are able to achieve the 50th percentile.
• Hard paper years (2018, 2022, 2025): These years have lower cutoffs (117 - 144) because fewer students have been scoring high enough scores to make the top 50%.

Why Do NEET Qualifying Marks Change Every Year?

The qualifying percentile (50th for General, 40th for reserved) is fixed by NMC, but the marks corresponding to that percentile shift every year based on three key factors:

Paper Difficulty:

• A more lenient paper will elevate the scores for all candidates, increasing the 50th percentile range.
• A more difficult paper will suppress the scores, reducing the cutoff in marks despite a constant percentile.

Number of Candidates:

• As a greater number of students showed up on NEET 2026 than in 2025, cutoff scores are expected to be higher in the middle range of scores.
• NEET 2026 has approximately 22.79 lakh candidates, compared to 22. 09 lakh in 2025, which will potentially move the cutoff higher.

New MBBS Seats:

• In the case of the 2026-27 session, approximately 11000 new MBBS seats are going to be added throughout India, increasing the total seats to almost 1.29 lakh.

NMC has approved approximately 11,000 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 session, taking total MBBS capacity in India to approximately 1.29 lakh seats across 819+ medical colleges. This expansion has the following implications for the NEET 2026 cutoff:
