A :NEET Safe Score” is subjective and depends on factors like category, college etc. General category students should aim for 650+ marks for top government colleges and 600+ marks for other government colleges. For reserved category students, a score of 580+ for OBC and 450-550+ for SC/ST could be considered safe. For NEET 2026 AIQ MBBS admissions, general category students must score an All India NEET 2026 rank less than 25000.

  • General Category: You must target 650-700+ to get a seat in a top government college like AIIMS or other prestigious institutions.
  • OBC Candidates: Anything above 580 marks are considered a safe score to get admission into state government medical colleges.
  • SC/ST Candidates: A score in the range of 450-550+ can be considered safe, with the exact score depending on the specific state's cutoff.
  • Top Government Colleges: A score of 650+ is a competitive target for securing a seat in any of the top government colleges

Competing with over 20 lakh aspirants, the competition is steep. Having awareness regarding the NEET 2026 safe score and cut off by category is essential for candidates to set achievable goals and be able to secure a seat in medical colleges.

What is a Safe Score for NEET 2026?

The safe score in NEET is the minimum score that students need to get in the NEET test to secure admission in private or public government colleges in India. The safe score for NEET changes every year. The safe score also differs from person to person based on reservation status.

  • Outstanding score (650+ marks) – Promises admission in the best government medical colleges, including AIIMS and elite institutions.
  • Good Score (500-649 marks): Enough for filling up the State quota government seats and Ranks good enough for admission in Private Colleges with Scholarship.
  • Average score (430-499 marks): possible entry into private medical colleges but not in government colleges.
  • Low Score (Under 429 marks): Very Few opportunities, private medical or dental colleges with high fees.

What is the difference Between the Safe and Cut-Off Score of NEET?

The major difference between the NEET cut-off and safe score is that the cut-off is fixed by the NMC itself every year based on multiple statistics. Meanwhile, the safe score is a score which will allow you to get admission as per your requirements. NTA or NMC doesn’t decide or disclose the safe score information, which is practically unofficial.

Cut-Off Score is the minimum number a student must achieve in the final NEET exam to be eligible for further processes like Counselling. Meanwhile, a safe score is a score that a candidate needs to score to secure admission to the best colleges in India. Determining a specific safe score for college admission is challenging, even for NMC. Hence, unlike a cut-off, which is pre-fixated by officials, you will never see them in official documents.
