As per the official data by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the total MBBS seats in India are 118190. This figure includes seats offered by both private and government medical colleges for admission to 5 years MBBS program. A report by NMC also states that a total of 118,190 seats are reserved for MMBS through NEET exam for 780 medical colleges.
If we consider state-wise MBBS seats through NEET, Tamil Nadu offers the highest number of seats for MBBS courses. Tamil Nadu has 38 government MBBS colleges with 5225 seats and 34 private colleges which have 6000 MBBS seats. Last year, a total of 5150 MBBS seats were added to medical colleges across different states. As per the recent report on several media channels, there has been a surge in MBBS seats in India to 1,18,190 from 51348 in 2014, witnessing a double in the past 10 years.
