BE (Civil Engineering) - Lateral Entry at RNS Institute of Technology (RNSIT), Bangalore is a 3-year full-time undergraduate engineering programme affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, and approved by AICTE. Designed exclusively for diploma holders, this lateral entry programme allows students to directly join the 2nd year (3rd semester) of the BE Civil Engineering programme, bypassing the 1st year. The curriculum covers core civil engineering subjects including structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, and surveying. The management quota fee is Rs. 1,10,000 per year (Rs. 3,30,000 for 3 years), making it one of the most affordable engineering programmes in Bangalore. Admission is primarily through DCET (Diploma Common Entrance Test) conducted by KEA, Karnataka.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year are currently in progress. DCET 2026 applications closed on April 10, 2026, and the exam is scheduled for May 23, 2026. Admit cards will be available from May 7, 2026. DCET counselling and seat allotment are expected in July-August 2026, with the batch commencing in October-November 2026. Management quota lateral entry admissions are open directly through the college.

Key Points

  • Lateral entry students join directly into the 2nd year (3rd semester) of the BE Civil Engineering programme, completing the degree in 3 years instead of 4.
  • The programme is affiliated to VTU, Belagavi, and the degree awarded is equivalent to the regular 4-year BE (Civil Engineering) degree.
  • The Civil Engineering department at RNSIT is equipped with dedicated labs for surveying, geotechnical engineering, concrete technology, fluid mechanics, and environmental engineering.
  • Students from RNS Group of Institutions (RNS Pre-University College, Bangalore/Murudeshwar) are eligible for a 10% discount on tuition fees under Management Quota for core branches including Civil Engineering.
  • The lateral entry seat intake is governed by AICTE norms, typically 10% of the sanctioned intake of the regular programme (approximately 6 seats for a 60-seat programme).
  • The management quota fee for BE Civil Engineering at RNSIT (Rs. 1,10,000/year) is among the lowest for any engineering programme in Bangalore, making it highly accessible.

RNSIT BE Civil Lateral FAQs

Ques. What is the duration of BE (Civil Engineering) Lateral Entry at RNSIT, and which year do I join?

Ans. Lateral entry students join directly into the 2nd year (3rd semester) of the BE Civil Engineering programme at RNSIT. The total duration of the programme for lateral entry students is 3 years (6 semesters), as opposed to 4 years for regular students. The degree awarded at the end is the same - BE (Civil Engineering) from VTU, Belagavi - and is equivalent in value to the regular 4-year degree. This makes it an efficient pathway for diploma holders in civil engineering to upgrade their qualification.

Ques. Why is the fee for BE Civil Engineering at RNSIT so low compared to other branches?

Ans. The management quota fee for BE Civil Engineering at RNSIT is Rs. 1,10,000 per year, which is significantly lower than other branches like CSE (Rs. 7,50,000/year). This is because civil engineering has lower demand compared to technology-oriented branches, and the fee is set accordingly to attract students. Additionally, civil engineering labs and infrastructure costs are different from those of IT/electronics branches. For lateral entry students, the total management quota fee for 3 years is just Rs. 3,30,000, making it one of the most affordable engineering degree options in Bangalore.

Ques. Is the fee for BE Civil Engineering (Lateral) payable in instalments at RNSIT?

Ans. No. Unlike other branches at RNSIT where fees can be paid in two instalments, BE Civil Engineering is specifically excluded from the instalment payment scheme as per the official RNSIT fee structure. The full annual fee of Rs. 1,10,000 must be paid in a single payment at the time of admission each year. Payment must be made through Cheque, DD, NEFT, RTGS, Google Pay, PhonePe, or online payment gateway. Cash transactions are strictly not allowed.

Ques. How many lateral entry seats are available in BE Civil Engineering at RNSIT?

Ans. As per AICTE norms, lateral entry seats are capped at 10% of the sanctioned intake of the regular programme. Since the BE Civil Engineering programme at RNSIT has a sanctioned intake of 60 seats, the lateral entry intake is approximately 6 seats. These seats are distributed across government (DCET) quota and management quota. Given the limited number of seats, students are advised to apply early for management quota as well as register for DCET.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing BE Civil Engineering (Lateral) from RNSIT?

Ans. Graduates of BE Civil Engineering from RNSIT can pursue careers in structural engineering, construction management, urban planning, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, and environmental engineering. The Civil Engineering department at RNSIT recorded 4 job offers in 2025 with a highest CTC of 3 LPA and 9 internship offers. While placement numbers are modest, civil engineering graduates have strong opportunities in government sector jobs (PWD, BBMP, NHAI, Railways), PSU recruitment through GATE, and private construction and infrastructure companies. Many students also pursue higher studies (M.Tech/MBA) or government competitive exams after graduation.

Ques. Can a diploma holder in a related field (like Architecture or Electrical) apply for BE Civil Engineering Lateral Entry at RNSIT?

Ans. No. For lateral entry into BE Civil Engineering, the candidate must specifically hold a Diploma in Civil Engineering or an equivalent programme. Diploma holders from other engineering disciplines (such as Electrical, Mechanical, or Architecture) are not eligible for lateral entry into the Civil Engineering programme. This is as per VTU and AICTE norms which require the diploma discipline to match the degree programme for lateral entry admissions. Candidates with diplomas in related fields would need to apply for the regular 1st year BE programme through KCET or COMEDK.
