The course is well designed for a marine engineering institute. It teaches us all the machinary we will see on board ships and ports. It also teaches us various procedures necessary in marine life like bunkering, lifeboard maintenance etc. I feel it will be very helpful in real world applications as it is taught directly by ex marine officer's like vaptains and cheif engineers. Tho8gh some extra theoretical stuff like constitution of india which is not necessary should be removed. There is an exam after every 2 months on a average which are of moderate difficulty

The workshop and other practical are much realayed to our real life pursuits . But they emphasis more on theory then practical that i think did make the course quite boring . I would prefer you to not bunk the classes as every clases are important

I always wanted to be a Marine Engineer and I know this college is the best in the industry. The syllabus relevancy and also talking with the pass-out of this institute made me to take admission here. One has to agree that you need to work on ships not in a AC room so the condition will be totally different so practical knowledge you will gain only working in the ship not in the labs. But you need to gain as much as theoretical knowledge you can gain.

The course has total of 8 semesters spread through 4 years. The last semester will be an internship on board. The curriculum has an average of 7 subjects per semester. But from the batch of 24 onwards it has been reduced to 6 per semester to make it easier for the students. Each subject has 2 teachers. For the practicals there are designated labs where each experiment is carried out. There is also a welding section for carrying out welding courses. It is a requirement to participate in atleast 3 courses at the end of 4 years. For example in the first year there was a course called stsdsd

The curriculum at SIMS is directly relevant to world-class trends, technologies, and regulations. The curriculum at SIMS is designed in such a way that it develops a sense of awareness in young cadets about their work onboard and the importance of their skills in the vessel. Exams are taken very frequently and practical workshop classes are done daily.

Indian Maritime University offers fewer placement opportunities compared to private universities. It’s because Govt. colleges don’t pay placement fees to companies to hire students. However, If you want to join Govt. Sector, an IMU degree can help. Also, the Govt. has taken shipping as a challenge to boost our economy, so you can expect to get new job opportunities in the field.
Career change options are limited for Marine Engineers. As a Marine Engineer, you can’t fit into other professions and the opposite is also true. You need to be a 2nd engineer or a Chief to stop going to sea and start a career on shore. You can get some career options by doing an MBA. Various universities offer PG Diploma in Marine Engineering. Marine Engineering students can appear in GATE as well, but the questions asked in the examination are from Mechanical Engineering.
