IMU CET 2026 Cutoff
The IMU CET 2026 cutoff will be released after the results are declared. The cutoff for IMU’s own campuses is expressed as a closing rank — the lowest rank that gets a seat in the final allotment round. Lower closing rank numbers mean the programme is more competitive. The 2025 data below gives you a strong benchmark.
IMU CET 2026 Expected Closing Ranks — B.Tech Marine Engineering
| Campus | General / UR | OBC-NCL | EWS | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IMU Mumbai Port | 1,179 | 2,597 | 2,752 | 8,565 | 13,709 |
| IMU Kolkata | 1,216 | 2,573 | 2,867 | 8,304 | 16,942 |
| IMU Chennai | ~1,343 | — | — | ~7,855 | ~8,944 |
IMU CET 2026 Expected Closing Ranks — B.Sc Nautical Science, DNS, and Naval Architecture
| Course | General / UR | OBC-NCL | EWS | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Sc Nautical Science — Navi Mumbai | 1,104 | 2,188 | 2,994 | 5,982 | 12,299 |
| DNS — Navi Mumbai | 2,888 | 3,834 | 10,132 | 6,233 | 11,420 |
| B.Tech Naval Architecture & OE — Vizag | 1,631 | 3,709 | 6,332 | 10,622 | 19,020 |
Factors That Affect IMU CET Cutoff
- Exam difficulty level: A tougher paper leads to lower raw scores and higher closing rank numbers (easier to qualify)
- Total candidates who appeared: More candidates means more competition; the same score may produce a lower (worse) rank
- Seat availability: Any increase in seats pushes closing ranks higher (more candidates get in)
- Category reservation: SC/ST closing ranks are significantly higher numbers than General — same score gives a better category rank
With 1 lakh+ registrations in 2026 vs. 55,000 in 2025, competition is sharply higher this cycle. Candidates targeting B.Tech Marine Engineering at IMU Kolkata or Mumbai should aim for a General category rank below 1,200 to be safe.

IMU CET 2026 Preparation Tips
If you are preparing for IMU CET 2027 or if you are a Class 12 student planning for the next cycle, here are section-wise preparation tips and recommended books to get a good rank in IMU CET.
Mathematics — 50 Questions (Highest Weightage)
- Mathematics carries the highest weightage along with Physics — together they are 50% of the exam
- Be thorough with Calculus, Trigonometry, Vectors, Coordinate Geometry, and Probability — these have the highest question frequency in IMU CET
- Practise at least 30–50 questions daily from the Class 11–12 syllabus
- Work through NCERT examples first, then move to additional practice problems
- Recommended books: NCERT Class 11 & 12 Mathematics; R.D. Sharma for extra practice
Physics — 50 Questions
- Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy), Electromagnetism, and Modern Physics are the most commonly tested areas in IMU CET
- Read the NCERT textbook first and understand concepts before attempting problems
- Formulas alone are not enough — understand how and when to apply each formula
- Recommended books: NCERT Class 11 & 12 Physics; H.C. Verma’s Concepts of Physics (Vol. 1 & 2)
Chemistry — 20 Questions
- Focus on high-yield topics — Physical Chemistry (Mole Concept, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry) and key Organic Chemistry reactions
- NCERT is sufficient for this section; do not over-invest time in Chemistry at the cost of Maths and Physics
- Recommended books: NCERT Class 11 & 12 Chemistry; P. Bahadur (Physical Chemistry) for selected numerical topics
English — 40 Questions
- English carries 40 marks, making it the third most important section. Focus on Grammar, Reading Comprehension, and Vocabulary
- Read English newspaper editorials daily to improve reading speed and build vocabulary
- Practise sentence correction and error-spotting regularly
- Recommended books: Wren & Martin High School Grammar; Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis
General Knowledge and Aptitude — 40 Questions
- Stay updated with national and international current affairs from the last 6 months before the exam
- For Aptitude, practise Number Series, Data Interpretation, and Logical Reasoning
- Learn maritime-specific GK — Indian ports, IMO conventions, types of vessels — as IMU often includes domain-specific questions
- Recommended sources: Manorama Yearbook; daily newspaper; a current affairs app
General Strategy
- Start preparation with NCERT for all three science subjects — NCERT is the base of the IMU CET syllabus
- Take at least 5–6 full-length mock tests in the 4 weeks before the exam
- Time yourself during practice — 200 questions in 180 minutes means roughly 54 seconds per question on average
- Since there is negative marking (–0.25), skip questions you have no idea about; return to them only if time permits
- Attempt English and GK/Aptitude first to build momentum, then move to Maths and Physics
