NLSIU: An Insider View

Student view on course curriculum

The course is really well designed, with the topics having real world relevance. We had Sociology 1, Economics 1 , Torts and Legal Methods. Sociology was the best designed- with all the topics relevant to real word applications. Economics 1 i felt was a little rushed, We had microeconomics, but i felt like it would've been better if this was taughtover two semesters instead of one. For Torts we relied more on case laws and a little on commentaries, with professors guiding us on how to interpret law and apply them. Legal Methods had the most applicability in real world applications, the 1st two modules we did was mostly theories and various forms of reasoning, however the third module felt the most practical to me- it had judgment and statute interpretation and indian polity.

Internship opportunity provided by the college

Okay so, throughout the year, we have three breaks - February, June and October. February is the internship break and you have to compulsorily do at least 1 prescribed internship. Usually, for first years its a research internship at an NGO, second years have to intern under a senior advocate, third year in a law firm, and fourth and fifth as per your discretion. The ASP student database has a huge repository where various internship opportunities are available for you to apply.

Placement provided by the college

Out of all the law schools in India, NLSIU has the best placement so yes that's something to look forward to! Almost all Tier 1 firms come to NLSIU for placements the university has its own campus recruitment committee, and most students bag PPOs. However, the options after college are not limited to this, and many students prepare fr civil services exams or practice as advocates, or go for the judiciary.

Yearly fees structure of the college

The course fees for my first year were 4,13,500 rupees. It includes mess charges of 67,500, one-time admission fees of 12,000, tuition and facilities fees of 2,19,000, hostel charges of 45,000, and a refundable deposit of 20,000. In the following years, I'll be paying 3,93,000 rupees. I have not availed any reservation or financial aid, however, the university financial aid committee offers grants on a need basis, the grant varies based on needs. Everyone pays the same fees, and there is no compensation for students from different categories.

Campus Life, Events and various Facilities

The college life at NLS is diverse and hectic if i must add, there is always something going on at campus, so much so that you will always have to make choices between two things. It is something for everyone, be it academics, co-curriculars, music, dance, sports, just name it and NLS has it. We have various events planned throughout the semester to offer an escape from the hectic academics. We also have various committees and collectives with different objectives, like the Academic Support Programme, The Literary and Debating Society, Sports Committee, CulComm, Event Management Committee, Quiz Club, NLS Feminist Alliance to name a few. NLS is one of the organisers of Trilateral, a sports fest between 3 NLUs- NALSAR, NLUJ and NLSIU.

Hostel facilities provided by the college

Hostel accomodations are as follows: Males: Ganga, cauvery, hoogly, himalaya and brahmaputra Females: Nilgiris, Vindhyas, Annapurna(mess block), gangotri, yamuna and narmada. The rooms are usually triple sharing, but double and single rooms are also available depending on the building. Annapurna mess is open to both genders and Hoogly mess for men only. Due to expansion, the hostels are alloted on need basis first. The hostel as well as the mess charges are quite affordable, with a very diverse menu.

Student views on the faculty and exams

So the batch of 2029 has around 300 students, with each section having 60 students and 4 professors for different courses, so yeah significant attention is paid, however, you can be easily ignored in class once you start piling up your readings. The academics are hectic, with a deadline almost each week due to the continuous evaluation system. There is almost something going on on campus, and to survive you'll have to manage your time really well. The exams are hard, like really hard, but it's doable if you have sincerely done your reading the entire trimester, the one-night cram does not work here. Due to the continuous evaluation pattern NLS follows the marks are divided into various small components, let's say there's this economics course then the mid-term is for 30 marks, the end term is for 30 again, and the advisory assessment is for 40 marks. Similarly, in torts, we had 10 marks for mid-term, 40 marks for moot, and 50 marks for end-term. It's different for different subjects with faculty deciding the same.

Admission process of the college

So for admission into the NLUs, you gave to give CLAT. I took CLAT in December 2023 and secured a reputable rank which got me into NLSIU in the general category. For the general category, the university accepts admissions up to rank 100 (a safe rank) however, it varies for different categories, the information for the same can be accessed on their respective websites. While applying for CLAT we had to prepare a preference list, I had NLSIU on my no 1 so I got the same. Anyone who has appeared for 12th or is appearing in the current year can apply.

Admission:

- I give you and got into indraprasth College of women under Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University I choose this college because I was going to study BA honours in all three and I felt that this one was comparatively more comprehensive and more rigorous then other two. - I also give CLAT but I was not able to perform very well in that except that I got into the colleges I applied for its just that I found NLS better than them and that's why I stayed here. -TO GET ADMISSION IN NLS YOU EITHER HAVE TO GIVE CLAT IF YOU WANT TO ENTER AS A LAW STUDENT AND YOU HAVE TO GIVE NLSAT IF YOU HAVE TO ENTER AS A UNDERGRADUATE BA STUDENT THERE ARE ALSO EXAMINATIONS FOR THE MASTERS DEGREE UNDER MPP AND LLB AS WELL AS LLM. FOR UNDERGRADUATING COURSES YOU NEED TO COMPLETE YOUR 12TH WITH MINIMUM OF 45% AND FOR THE POSTGRADUATE COURSES SPECIALLY FOR LLB YOU NEED TO HAVE A UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE. AND AS NLS HAS A COMPARATIVELY REGRESS ADMISSION PROCESS ITS A LITTLE HEART TO GET IN HAIR SPECIALLY THROUGH CLAT as it only take the top students basically top 100 students of CLAT in. Admission process is comparatively request but once you get in everything is smooth going and you get all the information through the college

Admission:

The admission was through the CLAT examination. It was conducted online for us due to COVID-19 and was a 150-mark test covering English, GK, legal aptitude, logical reasoning, and maths. The cut-off for NLS was around 90 for the general category students. The eligibility for the exam is 12th. The application form is available on the CLAT consortium website and for us, the fee was 4000 in 2020. After the announcement of results, there are lists of published college-wise and then you have to fulfill the requirements of that particular college such as submission of documents, and filing of some forms and undertaking. The pattern and conduct of the admission exam were good. There were no discrepancies or issues with the same.

As we faced a zero year situation due to the pandemic, we were given 5 courses for our first Trimester. We had courses like Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Legal Methods and Torts. We possess faculty who are extremely insightful and are luminaries at their respective courses. NLSIU: 16 Answered Questions

What are the various career paths available for law graduates from NLSIU, NALSAR, etc?

Jyoti KakkarCompleted LLB in Bachelor of Law (LL.B) & Commercial Laws of India, Army Institute of Law in 2020

Law is a profession that promises a lot of versatility. According to some of my friends who opted for Law, you can pursue a number of avenues if you have a degree in law. Some of them include:

  • Judiciary: If you are interested in joining the judicial level then go for IJS. It conducts competitive exams, prelims, finals, interviews and also training. It is very similar to the IAS.
  • Teaching: Once you complete your Masters, you will have to crack the NET or the National Eligibility Test which is conducted by the UPSC and start working as an assistant professor in a government college or university. Some private institutes even accept candidates who have not cleared the NET.
  • General Counsel: You can also join a company and work as their in-house legal advisor. You will take care of compliance and be in charge of settling disputes faced by the company.
  • Law Firm: You can try being a legal associate with a law firm. The compensation you will receive is directly proportional to the reputation of the firm.
  • LPO: You can work as an associate of a firm that is involved in outsourcing and caters to high profile clients. This may also include contracts. This can get you international exposure.

Last but not the least; you can try your hand in litigation: This is the most traditional form of law practice. You will have to go to courts, interact with clients, address the jury and judges, etc. This will get you a lot of clout.

Is the NLSIU Bangalore safe for women?

Sakshi Gupta
Lila Dey,M.Tech from National Institute of Engineering, Mysore (2018)

One of my friends studied in NLSIU Bangalore, before that she lived in Bangalore for 28 years. According to her, the first thing to mention is yes, it is absolutely safe.

Do not get influenced by the media when they talk about a certain place, there could be other intentions for claiming that. But as she lived there she knows that it is perfectly safe for women.

The location might make you feel lonely because the campus is next to Bangalore university and there are few other central government offices. On the other side, it is completely residential.

The culture of Bangalore is very welcoming and it has given homes to lakhs of people coming in from other states and it is capable of delivering a good livelihood.

It is suggested that you do not come to any conclusion just by information provided in the media. Analyze every aspect and make your decision accordingly.

Kanika KaushalLLB student at NLSIU Bangalore

NLSIU is one of the top law schools in India, and it is difficult to get into. A general category student should at least get a score of 100 in CLAT UG for NLSIU. The CLAT result and the CLAT counselling process together determine admission of a candidate into NLSIU Bangalore for B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M. programs.
