The NIRF Law Rankings 2025 are here! NLSIU Bengaluru stays #1, with NLU Delhi and NALSAR Hyderabad close behind. GNLU breaks into the top five, while IIT Kharagpur joins the top 10 for the first time.

NIRF Ranking 2025 for Law Colleges

The NIRF Rankings 2025 were released on September 4, 2025, by the Ministry of Education. This is the 10th edition of the rankings.

In the Law category, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, once again achieved the top position and was ranked as India’s best law school. National Law University (NLU), Delhi, was in the second position, and NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, was in the third place. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, and Symbiosis Law School, Pune, rounded off the top five institutions.

What’s New in 2025 Rankings?

Several changes were introduced in the ranking methodology this year:

  • Negative marking is now applicable if a research paper is retracted.
  • Following the removal of the temporary stay by the Madras High Court, the process has been made more transparent.
  • In 2025, the rankings will have expanded to include 17 categories, with a new category added for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Shifts in the 2025 Rankings

This year’s rankings saw some interesting movements among the top law schools. GNLU Gandhinagar made a remarkable jump, rising from 8th place last year to secure a spot in the top five at rank 5. IIT Kharagpur (Law) also created a buzz by entering the top 10 for the first time, landing at rank 6.

On the other hand, Aligarh Muslim University showed steady progress and broke into the top 10 at rank 9, while Symbiosis Law School, Pune, and Jamia Millia Islamia slipped slightly, now standing at 7th and 8th positions respectively.
