BTech Admission 2026 is mostly based on Class 12 marks and entrance exams. Students need to pass Class 12 with 50% to 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Math. The marks needed can change from college to college. Many entrance exams are held for BTech, like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, MHT CET, KCET, TNEA, TS EAMCET, and AP EAMCET. Some private colleges also have their own exams like VITEEE, SRMJEEE, BITSAT, and LPU NEST. A few colleges give direct admission without any exam. But students may have to go for a small interview or group talk.
There are more than 4,300 BTech colleges in India. Some top colleges are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, BITS Pilani, DTU, NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, VIT Vellore, and SRM. These colleges offer many BTech courses like Computer Science, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and IT. The course fee is different in every college. Some charge very low fees, like INR 4,400 at Allahabad University. Some charge very high, like INR 37.8 lakh at ICAS Manipal.
The full form of BTech is Bachelor of Technology. BTech is a 4-year undergraduate degree program in engineering and technology. It is the most popular course among indian students, especially among those from a PCM background. In this course, students learn about machines, computers, buildings, and more. It helps students get jobs in companies or go for higher studies. BTech is one of the most popular courses for science students in India.

BTech Counselling
The BTech admission process in 2026 is conducted through both national-level counselling, like JoSAA and state-level counselling organised by individual states. Students who qualify in exams such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, or state entrance tests can participate in these counselling rounds to secure a seat in engineering colleges. The counselling process involves registration, choice filling, document verification, and seat allotment based on merit and preferences.
JoSAA Counselling
The counselling process for BTech admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IIEST Shibpur takes place through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). Once students have successfully cleared JEE Main or JEE Advanced, they can register themselves at the official JoSAA website using their JEE Main or JEE Advanced credentials.
JoSAA provides candidates with admission into 121 institutions, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 40 Other-GFTIs.
To get admission via JoSAA counselling, students need to follow the steps below:
- Register at the JoSAA official website with the JEE Main or Advanced application number and password in the ‘JoSAA Candidate Registration and Choice Filling’ section.
- The next candidates need to select their preferred colleges from the list of colleges.
- Once the choices have been filled, candidates need to lock in their choices and wait for the results.
- There will be a 10-day window to change the college choice.
- After this, the seat allotment rounds begin.
- In 2024 counselling, a total of 7 counselling/seat allotment rounds were held, consisting of 2 Mock Rounds and 5 Actual Rounds.
Once the candidate is allotted a seat, they have the choice to accept or decline the offer. Even if they accept the offer, they can still wait for the next round to aim for a better college.
After the last round of JoSAA counselling, any vacant seats will be allocated through CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board). This is called the CSAB special counselling. CSAB counselling will be conducted separately for three channels: CSAB Special, CSAB NEUT, and CSAB Supernumerary.
State Counselling for BTech
The BTech admission process through state counselling is conducted by individual state authorities for admission into government and private engineering colleges. Most states either consider JEE Main scores or conduct their state-level entrance exams like MHT CET, TS EAMCET, AP EAMCET, WBJEE, GUJCET, etc.
To participate in state-level BTech counselling, students must follow these steps:
- Register on the official counselling portal of the respective state authority.
- Fill in your preferences for engineering colleges and branches based on your rank and interest.
- Upload and verify documents either online or at designated help centres.
- Lock your choices and wait for the seat allotment results.
- Participate in multiple rounds of counselling. Most states conduct 2–3 rounds, followed by mop-up or spot rounds based on seat availability.
- Once a seat is allotted, you must confirm the seat by paying the admission fee and reporting to the college.
- If not satisfied, you can participate in subsequent rounds to upgrade your seat.
Tip: Each state has a different process, eligibility criteria, and schedule. Always check the official counselling website regularly for updates and deadlines.
This process ensures admission to top engineering colleges in each state under state quota and reserved category seats, making it an important route for students seeking BTech admission after Class 12.
