Tamil Nadu BTech admission 2025 is conducted by the DTE (Directorate of Technical Education), Chennai. The state follows the TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) process to provide seats for BTech courses.
Registration for the 2025 TNEA session is expected to be conducted between May - June 2025. The rank list can be released in June 2025 and the counselling process can be conducted between June - September 2025.
BTech is a 4-year bachelor’s degree program. It focuses on different aspects of the engineering education. Upon course completion, you can explore various jobs in engineering and technology as per your specialisation. You must have cleared class 12 with 45% marks in mathematics, physics and chemistry to be eligible for the process.

Who is eligible for TNEA application?
The DTE sets the eligibility for the Tamil Nadu BTech admission for the TNEA process. You must ensure that you meet the qualifications before applying for admission. You can check the eligibility below.
- You should have passed class 12 or its equivalent from a recognised board.
- You should have obtained a minimum of 45% marks in mathematics, physics and chemistry put together in class 12.
- You are also eligible if you have passed any one of the HSC (Vocational Subject) with any one of the engineering-related subjects.
- Candidates belonging to backward classes, MBC, DNC, SC, SCA and ST must score 40% marks in class 12.
- For the Marine Engineering branch, you have to pass class 12 with PCM and English as separate subject with 60% marks. A minimum of 50% marks in English either at class 10 or class 12 is also required.
- For the mining engineering branch, you must satisfy the academic requirements of Anna University.
Other than the academic requirements, you also have to meet the nativity criteria which are as follows.
- You are eligible if you have passed classes 8 - 12 from a school located in Tamil Nadu, You are not required to produce the nativity certificate.
- Tamil Nadu native candidates who have passed classes 8 - 12 from a school outside of Tamil Nadu are also eligible.
- Children of Central Government employees can also apply irrespective of their nativity, provided their parents have been serving in Tamil Nadu for the past 5 years at the time of application.
- Children of the Public Sector or Government recognised Institutions employees can also apply irrespective of their nativity, provided their parents have been serving in Tamil Nadu for the past 5 years at the time of application.
- Children of All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre officers can also apply.
- You are also eligible if you are from other states and have completed classes 8 -12 from Tamil Nadu.
- Srilankan Tamil Refugee candidates who have studied in Tamil Nadu are also considered. They have to produce their identity certificate.
- OCI/PIO cardholders of Tamil Nadu can participate under the open category. This does not apply to OCI/PIO cardholders born in foreign countries.
Is TNEA based on 12th marks?
TNEA is based on your class 12 marks specifically in the subjects of mathematics, physics and chemistry. A merit-based system is used by the TNEA to prepare an overall rank which is used for seat allocation during the counselling process. You should have obtained a minimum of 45% marks (40% for reserved categories) in mathematics, physics and chemistry put together in class 12.
How to apply for BTech in Tamil Nadu?
Tamil Nadu BTech admission is conducted by DTE through the TNEA process. You can fill out the application form on the official TNEA portal if you meet the eligibility criteria. The application process is as follows.

What is the reservation policy for Tamil Nadu BTech admission 2025?
Seat allocations are made under the 7 categories following the reservation rules laid down by the Tamil Nadu Government. You can check the reservation percentage in the following table.

The 7.5% of seats on the preferential basis of Government School students who studied classes 6 - 12 in state government schools applies to all categories including the general category. Communal reservation is valid only for Tamil Nadu native candidates.
Candidates not producing a Community Certificate in the TNEA-prescribed format will be treated under the Open Competition (OC) category. SC, ST, SCA, MBC and DNC, BC and BCM candidates are also eligible for the OC category in addition to the reservation made for them.
Special reservations (Children of Ex-Servicemen, PwD and Eminent Sports Persons) can only be claimed by the Tamil Nadu candidates by producing appropriate certificates and supporting documents. TNEA has also specified the eligibility criteria for various disabilities on the official website.
What is the counselling process for Tamil Nadu BTech admission 2025?
A merit list is prepared by the competent authority based on class 12 marks. The overall rank is then prepared based on the merit list with the defined procedure for tie-break. The overall and community ranks are published on the TNEA portal.
For the selection process, candidates are grouped based on their ranks and each group is allowed to participate according to their turn. You have to log in to the official portal to perform different activities related to counselling. There are multiple rounds in the TNEA counselling.
Each counselling round has the following 4 stages.
- Choice Filling.
- Tentative Allotment.
- Confirmation of the Tentative Allotment.
- College Reporting and Payment of Fees as per the confirmation.
You will be given 3 days to fill out the choices. Your allotment will be based on the preferential order of the choices based on your rank and eligible seat matrix. You must confirm your seat within 2 days of allotment. If you fail to confirm your allotment, you will be automatically taken to the next round.
If allotted a seat, you will see the following options on your candidate page.

Upward or Move to Next Round | If you are allotted no seat, then this option will be shown. You can opt for upward movement for seat allotment. |
If you are satisfied with your allotment, you can accept it, download the allotment order and report at the college. If you do not join the college in the prescribed time, your allotment will be cancelled.
If you have opted for the accept and upward option, you will be given a tentative allotment order. You must report at the nearest TNEA Facilitation Centre (TFC), pay the tuition fee and submit the documents for holding the seat. If you do not report or submit the document, your allotment will be cancelled and you will not be considered for further rounds.
During the upward movement of each round, seats of candidates not reported to college and TFC are pooled and are considered for the upward movement. The original documents submitted at TFC during the upward movement are transferred to the provisionally allotted college. If you do not join the provisionally allotted college, you can collect your original documents from it and 75% of fees paid at TFC will be refunded after the approval process.
