The Master of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (MPMIR) is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme offered by the Department of Psychology under the Faculty of Social Sciences at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. The programme spans 4 semesters and is designed to equip students with a unique blend of psychological insights and management skills, covering areas such as human resource management, industrial relations, organisational behaviour, and labour welfare. The total tuition fee for the programme is Rs. 1,20,000 (Rs. 60,000 per annum), making it one of the most affordable specialised management programmes in India. Admission is based on CUET-PG scores, and the programme has a total seat intake of 59 seats. The course is offered in full-time on-campus mode and is popular among students seeking careers in HR, labour relations, and organisational management at public sector undertakings, corporates, and government departments.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are upcoming. Based on the 2025 schedule, the BHU CAP-PG registration typically opens in late May and closes in mid-June, following the declaration of CUET-PG results (expected around May 2026). Counselling and seat allotment rounds are conducted through the Combined Allotment Program (CAP-PG) on the official BHU admission portal.

Key Points

  • The MPMIR programme is uniquely housed under the Department of Psychology, making it distinct from conventional MBA/HR programmes by integrating psychological theory with management practice.
  • The programme covers specialised subjects such as Industrial Psychology, Labour Laws, Collective Bargaining, Wage Administration, and Organisational Development.
  • BHU's MPMIR is one of the few programmes in India that combines personnel management with industrial relations from a psychological perspective.
  • Students have access to BHU's central placement cell, and many graduates secure positions in PSUs like ONGC, NTPC, and BHEL, as well as private sector companies.
  • The programme allows students to pursue higher studies (Ph.D.) through NET/JRF examinations after completion.

BHU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 4 Reviews

The admission process for the course consists of a written entrance exam, a Group Discussion (GD), and a Personal Interview (PI). The entrance exam evaluates candidates on Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, English, and General Awareness. Top performers are invited for GD and PI, with final selection based on all three components. While the faculty includes supportive professors, the majority tend to rely heavily on textbooks, limiting educational depth.

The course costs around INR 25,000 annually, with the full two-year program priced at INR 60,000 per annum. Additional costs include a hostel deposit of INR 1,000 per semester and monthly mess fees. Although the department's campus placement is not prioritized, students can engage with the central placement cell. Many students aim for government jobs with companies like ONGC and NTPC, often achieving well-paid positions with an average package of INR 6 lakh.

Alumni help facilitate internships at companies such as HUL and ONGC, and some students pursue PhDs via NET/JRF exams. The college does not provide its own scholarships or loans, but students can access state scholarships and easily obtain loans due to the university's reputation.

BHU MPMIR FAQs

Ques. Is MPMIR at BHU a good course for HR careers, or is an MBA in HR better?

Ans. MPMIR at BHU is a niche programme that combines psychology with HR and industrial relations, making it particularly strong for roles in labour relations, industrial psychology, and HR in PSUs. While an MBA in HR from a top B-school may offer broader corporate exposure and higher starting salaries, MPMIR at BHU is highly affordable and provides a strong academic foundation. Many MPMIR graduates have secured positions in ONGC, NTPC, and similar organisations. If you are targeting PSUs or research careers, MPMIR is a strong choice; for top private sector placements, an MBA from a higher-ranked institution may be preferable.

Ques. What is the CUET-PG paper code for MPMIR admission at BHU?

Ans. MPMIR at BHU falls under the Department of Psychology (Faculty of Social Sciences). Candidates should appear in the CUET-PG paper relevant to Psychology or Social Sciences. It is advisable to check the latest BHU PG Admission Bulletin (available at bhu.ac.in) for the exact NTA paper code applicable for the current year, as it may be updated annually.

Ques. Does BHU MPMIR have a separate entrance test or GD/PI?

Ans. No, admission to MPMIR at BHU is based solely on CUET-PG scores. There is no separate GD/PI for this programme. Seat allotment is done strictly on merit through the CAP-PG system. (Note: GD/PI is required only for certain special courses like MBA at IMS BHU, not for MPMIR.)

Ques. What is the hostel situation for MPMIR students at BHU? Is it easy to get a hostel?

Ans. BHU has 72 hostels on campus accommodating nearly 11,000 students. Hostel allotment is competitive and is generally based on entrance exam merit and availability. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation as soon as admission is confirmed. The hostel fee is approximately Rs. 5,375 per year for male students. Female students have separate hostel facilities. It is not guaranteed that all students will get hostel accommodation in the first year.

Ques. Can MPMIR graduates from BHU appear for government exams like UPSC or state PSC?

Ans. Yes, MPMIR is a postgraduate degree recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and graduates are eligible to appear for UPSC, state PSC, and other government competitive examinations. Many MPMIR graduates from BHU have pursued careers in government services, PSUs, and also gone on to complete Ph.D. programmes through NET/JRF.

Ques. What is the difference between MPMIR and MSW (Master of Social Work) at BHU? Which is better for HR roles?

Ans. MPMIR is specifically designed for personnel management and industrial relations, with a strong focus on HR practices, labour laws, industrial psychology, and organisational behaviour. MSW has a broader social welfare orientation. For corporate HR and industrial relations roles, MPMIR is more directly relevant. MSW is better suited for NGO, social development, and community welfare careers. Both are offered at BHU, but MPMIR is the preferred choice for students targeting HR and IR roles in industry.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I wanted a course where I should be able to learn psychology alongwith management skills and this course was exactly what I wanted. Faculty: Student Ratio- 1:5. The professors are well qualified but most of them are at their retirement age so they do not have the zeal to teach, they are teaching just for the sake of teaching.
