Jawaharlal Nehru University, established in 1969, is one of the top-ranked universities in India. It has been awarded the designation of 'University of Merit' by the UGC and accredited by NAAC with grade A++. JNU NIRF Ranking 2024 stood at 2, overall.
JNU admissions are granted on the basis of Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for all UG and PhG programs, except BTech, MBA and M.Sc Biotechnology programs. JNU offers a range of courses in diverse disciplines like Arts, Commerce, Science, Management, and Engineering & Technology. JNU Placement Report 2025 has not been released yet. An anonymous reviewer on our website, who is a BA Hons French student here, says that JNU Placements do exist but very less in frequency. The placements for a language course depends on market demand that fluctuates very often for French language. There are absolute placements for Japanese and Chinese language while Korean and French are in between. Well students getting placed after degree is not more than 40-50% but 100% students get work through freelancing. You can work as a freelancer, tourist guide or choose the ultimate path - do your masters, PhD and become a professor. This is the ultimate placement and nowadays private schools teach another language to students, so graduates have plenty of opportunities in teaching.
JNU Scholarships 2025
JNU grants scholarships based on various criteria including merit, merit-cum-means, need, and reserved categories. Some of the JNU Scholarships are listed below.
- Merit-cum-Means Scholarships: A number of Merit-cum-Means scholarships are available for deserving and meritorious students whose parent's/guardian's income does not exceed INR 2,50,000/- per annum or as may be laid down from time to time.
- Ford Foundation Scholarships: A limited number of Ford Foundation Scholarships of the value of INR 700/- per month are available for students of the M.A. Programme of the School of International Studies. The Scholarships will be awarded purely on merit subject to the proviso that at least half of them will go to female students.
- Prof. Ramesha Rao Scholarship and Travel Grant: A sum of INR 10,00,000/- was donated by Dr. (MINR ) K. Sudha Rao, wife of Late Prof. A. Ramesha Rao of the School of Life Sciences for creation of an endowment for “A. Ramesha Rao Scholarship and Travel Grant” for students securing the highest grade in the Cancer Biology, a discipline in which Professor Rao had specialized and guided students. The award is for a period of 10 months @ INR 3,000/- per month in a year and a travel grant of INR 30,000/- to an M.Phil/Ph.D student for presenting papers in International Conference, Seminar, etc. in the area of Cancer Biology.
- Tendulkar Scholarship: This Scholarship of INR 400/- p.m. is awarded for a period of two years to 2 students of various Centres of School of Social Sciences by rotation.
- Prof. Nurul Hasan Scholarship: Two Scholarships of INR 1500/- p.m. each are awarded for a period of one year to students of second year M.A./M.Sc./MCA students with the highest CGPA at the end of the first year, one of which shall be for Social Science subjects and the other for Science subjects.
- Jawahar Bhawan Trust Scholarship: These Scholarships are of the value of INR 1000/-p.m. awarded to 10 students for a period of one year (covering two semesters) and may be renewed for subsequent semester(s) subject to the condition that the student maintains CGPA of 5.5 at the end of third semester of MA/M.Sc. and fifth semester in case of MCA.
- Prof. MJK Thavaraj MCM Scholarship: There are 2 Scholarships worth INR 300/- each p.m. and INR 2000/- as contingency are awarded on merit to M.A. (Economics) first year students of School of Social Sciences.
- D S Gardi Sanskrit Scholarship: Annually awarded to two M.A. students of Sanskrit Studies for a period of two yeaINR These scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance of the students in the first semester.
- Prof. Gouri Shankar Singhal Merit Scholarship: One scholarship to M.Sc. (SLS) 2nd year student value of INR 1000/- per month for one year who obtained highest CGPA at the end of third semester to be selected at school level on the basis firstly of merit and secondly of need.
- There is also a provision for students coming from weaker sections of society under the "Earn as you Learn" scheme.
JNU Campus & Facilities 2025
JNU Delhi is spread across a huge campus area of over 1000 acres, with some of the best facilities on-campus. Some of these are listed below.
- Central Library: The Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Central Library is fully automated and utilizes KOHA, an Integrated Library Management Software, for various housekeeping tasks in different sections. Electronic resources are accessible through the remote access platform 24/7, providing users with the flexibility to access resources anytime from anywhere. The library has an extensive collection of over 516,243 volumes, and 38, 973 perpetual E-Books, encompassing a wide range of materials such as books, theses, dissertations, bound volumes of journals, newsletters, government and UN reports, encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, glossaries, CDs-ROMs, charts, maps, microfilms, audio/video cassettes, and more. It also serves as a repository for all government publications and significant international organizations' publications, including the WHO, European Union, United Nations, and their affiliated agencies. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Central Library subscribed to an impressive array of resources, including 35 print newspapers, 42 print magazines, 3 print journals, 27 Online Databases. Besides, it provided access to 12 databases through UGC eSS- Consortia.
- Hostels: Students admitted to full-time programs in the current year, who have passed their qualifying examinations from places outside Delhi and are not resident of Delhi and those who are admitted to a program at a level at which the student already has a degree or has pursued/taken admission in any institute/studying in JNU at the same level with hostel accommodation. Outstation students, who are admitted to a programme of study after passing their qualifying examination after a gap of 2 years but not more than 5 years before admission to JNU may also avail hostel facilities.
- University Health Centre: JNU Health Centre has medical staff, OPD, an ambulance, and medical facilities for all foreign students.
- Sports & Games: JNU provides the basic facilities for such activities in terms of the sport fields/courts and also playing equipment, both for practice and competitions. The following games are organised under the framework of a club, with an elected Convener. Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Chess, Volleyball, Mountaineering & Trekking, Weightlifting, Power-Lifting & Body Building, Taekwondo, Football, Tennis, Table-Tennis & Yoga. Each Hostel has separate facilities for recreation which includes outdoor courts for Basketball, Badminton and Volleyball as also facilities for indoor games like Table - Tennis, Chess, Carrom, etc. Each hostel gets an annual grant towards recreation and is spent by the Hostel Committee in consultation with Warden (Recreation).
- Cultural Activities: Cultural activities among the student community on the campus are promoted through various cultural clubs namely: Debating, Drama, Film, Fine Arts, Literary, Music and Dance, Nature and Wild Life, Photography, and UNESCO. The University has a Culture Committee headed by a Cultural Coordinator to promote the functioning of the clubs and organizing of various cultural activities from time to time.

Ques. What is it like to study at JNU Delhi?
Ans. As per students and alumni, studying at JNU can be liberating and scary at the same time. If you've been in the Indian education system all your life, you're probably used to being spoon-fed and not having any room for your own thinking. Once in JNU, this completely changes. Nobody is here to tell you what to study, how to study, when to study. There's no minimum attendance requirement so no pressure on that front. There's loads of work pressure in the form of homework, assignments, presentations, etc at the BA/MA level, yet your time is your own so you have to decide when to work and draw your own lines. At the MPhil/PhD level, there's an exciting research atmosphere, and you can really feel that you're among people who are here to do genuine research. But again, you have to draw the lines and make sure you don't lose focus. Campus life is also so liberating that the above is a bigger challenge than it might seem. Women feel safer on campus than anywhere else in the country, so there is freer interaction across gender boundaries. There's also a late night culture, which means you can be up till 3 in the morning and still run into lots of people at the dhabas. There are movie screenings, political activities such as protests and hunger strikes, you can hear some of the greatest minds in the country give public lectures. If you're receptive to it, JNU will change your life, expand your horizons, and challenge your comfortable ways of thinking. You're treated like an adult so you have to learn to be one quickly.
Ques. Is it worth taking admission to JNU for Masters?
Ans. As per our research, if you want to pursue MA in one of the streams offered at JNU, then it’s totally worth it. JNU has been consistently ranked as the second-best university in India by NIRF. It offers such a great environment for research, and being a central university it is also quite affordable. In the end, it all depends on your aims and objectives. If you really want to go for a Master’s degree then JNU is undoubtedly the best.
Ques. Which is better, JNU or Delhi University?
Ans. Students and alumni report that if you are in the top 10 colleges of Delhi University, then the Bachelors programme is great. There is a lot of exposure in terms of meeting people and the extra curricular activities are amazing. However, there is a serious issue with hostels, the examination process is outdated and the university is not very student friendly (especially when compared to JNU). Most people get bored by the time their 3rd year ends.
Students pursuing Masters and MPhil at JNU say it is a lot tougher to get through in most ways because no one can predict what the university really is looking for. JNU has a lot of problems but it is in most ways an extremely accepting environment. It really does depend on what you do with your time in JNU. If you are motivated, you can achieve absolutely anything. There is a general culture of debate in the university which makes it so much more student friendly. It is an extremely cheap university and most departments are rewarding, in terms of faculty. It is difficult to leave JNU once you are in. It does promote a certain feeling of lethargy though if you are lazy because it expects you to push yourself especially at higher levels of study.
The BA courses at DU are of much higher standards in most respects (mostly because JNU barely offers any BA courses). That being said, DU has draconian rules and lifestyle. In the end, one should choose a university that they can make the most out of.

The CUET UG 2025 exam is scheduled to be held between May and June 2025.
