Indira Gandhi National Open University, popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University, is a distance-learning university, established in 1985. It is the largest open university in the world, run by the Central Government of India. IGNOU is recognized by UGC and accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by NAAC. The university has been ranked 1st in the Open University Category by NIRF and 1st in the Overall Category by Outlook in 2024. IGNOU began with two programs in 1987, with a strength of 4,528 students. Today, IGNOU offers part-time/distance education to more than 4 million students in India and other countries through 21 Schools of Studies, a network of 67 regional centres, 2,667 learner support centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions.
IGNOU offers over 200 Bachelor's, Master’s, Diploma, Certificate, and Doctoral degree programs via Open & Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Learning (OL) methods. MA is the flagship program. The major courses offered are BA, MA, BBA, BCA, MBA, MCA, B.Ed, B.Com, M.Sc, and PhD. IGNOU fee for MA ranges from INR 5,400 to INR 13,100 for the first year. IGNOU Admission opens twice a year, for January and July sessions. Online registrations for admission start in November-December for the January session and May-June for the July session. Admissions are based on merit and entrance exams conducted by the university.

IGNOU Admission 2025
IGNOU conducts fresh admissions for all courses (except programs based on entrance tests) twice a year, in January and July. IGNOU Admission is merit-based. In addition, the university conducts an entrance test for a few courses like B.Ed, Post-Basic BSc Nursing, MPhil, and PhD. The registrations are held online on its official Samarth portal for all ODL and Online programs. IGNOU registration fee is INR 300 (Non-Refundable) for all courses. IGNOU Admission: How to Apply?
The registration process for IGNOU is online. Applicants can visit the official website @ignou.ac.in for online registrations. Candidates need to fill in all the required information and attach all the necessary documents. Students need to check their application status once the application is submitted by clicking on the “Know Your Status” option. The students can also re-register themselves by following a similar process.
Further, foreign students residing in India with a valid student visa are also eligible to apply for various IGNOU Courses. They are required to pay an international fee applicable to them and can apply on the official website. However, programs with a limited number of seats are not offered to foreign candidates.
IGNOU Admission Status
To check the IGNOU admission status of fresh registration or re-registration for both sessions (January and July), students must visit the IGNOU official website. Students must check their admission status as the application forms are sometimes rejected or stand in ‘pending’ status due to eligibility issues or incorrect academic documentation. To check the status, students are required to enter their enrollment number or program code. The university also informs students about their admission status within two months via email or text message.

IGNOU has made registering online for every student on the IGNOU Student Login portal mandatory. Students applying for fresh admission in the IGNOU or re-registering for the next semester/year must register themselves on the IGNOU student portal by visiting the university's official website. Students can log in using their 10-digit enrolment number provided by the university. After completing the registration process, the candidate will have easy access to the Student Login Portal of IGNOU with valid login credentials. Using these login credentials, candidates can check their application status and results.
IGNOU Assignment 2025
IGNOU follows a multi-tier system of evaluation - self-assessment exercises within each unit of study, continuous evaluation mainly through assignments which are tutor-marked, practical assignments as well as several seminars/workshops/extended contact programs, term-end examination, project work, etc. The evaluation process will depend on various instructional activities that students undertake. These assignments are conducted before term examinations.
IGNOU Course assignments are an integral part of the semester-wise course structure, holding a 30% weightage in the overall marking scheme. Students must submit IGNOU assignments online or at the study centre on or before the last date. Incase a student does not submit the assignments, then they will not be able to attend the final exams. Students are required to pass the assignments with at least 40% marks to be eligible for the term-end exams.
IGNOU Exam Form 2025
Students must duly fill out the IGNOU exam form related to their specific courses. However, before the forms are filled out, all pending assignments have to be submitted by the students to the specific IGNOU Study Centres. The official website of IGNOU will provide details related to IGNOU Assignments. If the candidate does not fulfil the eligibility criteria for a specific course or fails to submit the assignment within the specified time limit, the hall ticket will not be uploaded by the University. Hence, candidates must not wait for the last date for the submission of assignments. While filling the IGNOU Exam Form, candidates would also need to pay the Exam Fee for theory and practical examinations. IGNOU Exam Fee of INR 200 (per course) can be paid online through Netbanking/ Debit/ Credit card. Students need to wait for the acknowledgment status after the fee payment. In case of delay in acknowledgment, candidates are advised to wait for 72 hours to get the updated status.
IGNOU Result 2025
IGNOU results are usually declared after 45 days of its term-end examination. IGNOU conducts exams twice a year in June and December. The IGNOU result carries several important details such as enrollment number, maximum marks, marks obtained, grades, course name, course code, etc. Apart from TEE Results, IGNOU also publishes grade cards, Entrance Exam results, and On-Demand Exam results. IGNOU Exam Center
IGNOU releases the list of exam centres on its official website for all the students appearing for the mid-term examination. Exam centres will be allotted as per students’ choice, where they will be attending exams for all the courses.
The Term End Examination is conducted twice a year by IGNOU - once in June and then in December. With lakhs of students enrolling in IGNOU, it is imperative to have sufficient exam centres in every corner of the country. The IGNOU Exam Center List confirms more than 653 exam centres set up by the University across the country.
A change in Exam Center will be applicable within 5 days post-submission of the examination form through an online portal. Students can place their request through that portal. No requests related to exam centre change will be entertained after that.
IGNOU Scholarship 2025
IGNOU also offers financial assistance to students belonging to reserved categories, viz. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. IGNOU Scholarship and Fee reimbursements are only issued to students who are financially weak or single girl children to their parents. To avail IGNOU Scholarship, candidates are required to fill out the application form on the IGNOU website.
Candidates from rural areas are entitled to a 50% fee concession, subject to the production of a domicile certificate. The urban students below the poverty line may be given a 50% fee concession. Moreover, Jail inmates residing and under trial in Indian prisons are also exempted from payment of the program fee, including the registration fee.

IGNOU Placement 2025

Ques. How to apply for IGNOU admission?
Ans. The candidates seeking admission can apply through the IGNOU Online admission portal within the stipulated time. Candidates can also re-register for certain UG, PG, and Research courses offered by IGNOU before the stipulated time through the IGNOU re-registration portal. For admission to most of the IGNOU courses offered by the University, candidates are shortlisted for admission based on marks obtained in the qualifying degree. Ans. IGNOU Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates are recognized by all member universities of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and UGC. All the degrees and diplomas offered by IGNOU are UGC recognized and are at par with Degrees/Diplomas/ Certificates of all Indian Universities/ Institutions.
Ques. Is there any provision for scholarships or reimbursement of fees in IGNOU?
Ans. Candidates belonging to reserved categories, i.e, SC, ST, and Differently abled candidates, are eligible for fee reimbursement by the state government. Apart from this, IGNOU also promotes Scholarship schemes like the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People (NCPEDP) for postgraduate-level programs. Ques. If I want to withdraw from the program after confirmation of my admission, will I get a fee refund from IGNOU?
Ans. The fee, once paid, is not refundable under any circumstances. The admission fee paid by students will also not be adjusted in any other program. However, in case the university denies admission, the programme fee will be refunded after the deduction of the processing fee in the same mode in which the payment was made.
Ques. What is the time frame for getting confirmation of my admission in IGNOU?
Ans. The admission form submitted by all the applicants needs to be scrutinized, verified, and accepted by the Regional Centre concerned for confirmation of the admission. It is the responsibility of the Regional Centre to communicate with the applicants as soon as the process is completed. If the candidate has not been approached by the Regional Centre, the applicant can visit the Regional Centre and seek information.

Ques. Is it possible to pursue more than one course at IGNOU?
Ans. Yes, according to a new circular released by UGC, students can now pursue two full-time courses or two distance courses at IGNOU. This is applicable only if one chooses the same mode of study, such as regular, online, or distance, for both courses.
Ques. How are classes conducted for IGNOU distance courses?
Ans. For IGNOU online courses, classes are only scheduled using the online mode. Therefore, students who take up online courses are not required to travel elsewhere. They have the convenience of being able to attend their classes from their home. Classes are provided during weekends for the convenience of learners who are pursuing IGNOU distance courses along with their jobs.
Ques. Do foreign institutes accept Master's degrees from IGNOU?
Ans. The degree from IGNOU University is easily accepted and recognised in other countries since IGNOU is a government-run institution with UGC recognition. Moreover, DEC and AICTE have both approved the degree courses of this university.
Ques. What is the minimum grade one needs to obtain in IGNOU assignments and exams to pass?
Ans. To pass a course, IGNOU students must receive at least a "D" on all of their assignments and term-end exams. Nonetheless, to complete a programme from IGNOU, the total average must be at least a "C." Candidates cannot neglect assignments because they have a 30% weightage in each IGNOU programme. A course is not complete without assignments. Each IGNOU student must also complete and turn in their assignments to the Study Center before the deadline. Any student who is unable to submit is not permitted to take the IGNOU University's term-end exam.

Ans. By following the steps below, one can register on the IGNOU student portal and create your student account.
- Go to https://ignou.samarth.edu.in and click on New registration.
- Provide the Name, Program, and enrollment number, and submit.
- You will receive a One-time Password (OTP) at the email address you have on file. Please follow the instructions and input the OTP on the following screen. Please remember the password you chose.
- Once successfully registered, you may go back to https://ignou.samarth.edu.in and log in. Your username is your Enrollment Number.
Ques. When will I get confirmation of my IGNOU online admission?
Ans. The verification procedure of IGNOU online admission is time-consuming. If a student checks the IGNOU website to see if they have been admitted, it may or may not display the information correctly. Then, it is advised to hold on for a few days. Within seven days of the successful submission of the application, the institution notifies the applicant about whether they have been admitted or not.
Ques. How to receive the original degree from IGNOU after the completion of the course?
Ans. After the completion of the course, one can get the original certificate by filling out the IGNOU convocation registration form and paying the online fees for the degree. On the convocation day, the original certificate will be presented to the students who have successfully finished their course. However, if you are unable to attend the convocation despite paying the fee, IGNOU will send your degree/certificate to your registered address via Post.
Ques. Does IGNOU allow to change of course after being admitted?
Ans. IGNOU allows the change of electives or courses for undergraduate courses within 30 days of receiving the initial batch of course materials for a fee of INR 200 for a 4-credit course or portion of a course, and INR 400 for an 8-credit course. For the Master's Degree Program, the cost is INR 400 for 2/4 credits and INR 800 for the 6/8 credits program.
Ques. Does IGNOU offer any certificate courses?
Ans. IGNOU provides a variety of courses ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate, advanced certificate, and more. The duration of the certificate courses is as short as 6 months and goes up to 2 years. Some specializations offered are Agricultural Policy, Cyber Law, Adult Education, Patent Practice, Teaching of English as a Second Language, and more.
Ques. Does IGNOU take CUET scores for any course?
Ans. IGNOU does not give admission based on the CUET entrance exam. Admissions to most of the courses are based on a candidate's merit in the qualifying examination. Therefore, students who could not appear in CUET can take admission into the National Open University.
Ques. Can I get IGNOU scholarships for PG courses?
Ans. Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU offers financial assistance to students from the economically weaker section, the physically challenged, Jail Inmates, and more. The financial assistance extends to SC, ST students, and transgender applicants too. MPhil and PhD students can apply for scholarships of up to INR 8,000 per month.
