IGNOU Latest Updates and News

01 Sep, 2026 IGNOU July 2026 Session re-registration deadline has been extended to Sept 15, 2026, @onlinerr.ignou.ac.in, for all ODL and Online programs. Read News.

01 Sep, 2026 IGNOU July 2026 Session registration deadline has been extended to Sept 15, 2026, @ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. Read More.

IGNOU Admission 2026 for the July session is open and closes on 15 September 2026. The deadline covers both Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online programmes. Candidates apply online at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in with a non-refundable registration fee of INR 300. IGNOU conducts no entrance exam for most of its programmes. Admission is open to anyone who meets the qualification requirement.

  • Only three routes use an entrance test. These are B.Ed, PhD and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing.
  • There is no upper age limit for admission to most IGNOU programmes.
  • A bachelor's degree requires 10+2 passed in five subjects. Four subjects are not accepted.
  • Existing students must complete re-registration, not fresh admission, to continue a programme.
  • IGNOU publishes no cutoff or merit list, because admission is not competitive.

IGNOU offers 325 programmes through 69 regional centres and over 2,000 learner support centres. A further 45 academic programmes run through its own online learning system. Overseas study centres operate in 15 countries. Applicants choose a regional centre and a learner support centre during the application.

IGNOU Admission 2026: What Is Open Right Now

IGNOU runs two admission sessions every year. One begins in January and the other in July. An applicant who misses one session can apply for the next.

Several IGNOU admission routes run on separate clocks. The table below shows the status of each route.

Admission Route Portal Current Status
ODL programmes, July 2026 session ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in Open, closes 15 September 2026
Online programmes, July 2026 session ignouiop.samarth.edu.in Open, closes 15 September 2026
Re-registration, July 2026 session onlinerr.ignou.ac.in Open, closes 15 September 2026
Foreign students, online programmes ignouforeigniop.samarth.edu.in Separate portal, confirm status
PhD through Research Entrance Test ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in Annual cycle, separate schedule
B.Ed through entrance test ignou-bed.samarth.edu.in Annual cycle, separate schedule
ODL and Online, January 2027 session Same portals Not yet announced

The January 2027 cycle has not opened. IGNOU has not released the January 2027 Common Prospectus. The current governing document is the Common Prospectus for July 2026.

Editor's Tip: Check the date on the prospectus before you trust anything you read about IGNOU admission. The university publishes a separate Common Prospectus for every session, and each one stays available online. Work from the prospectus that names the session you are applying for.

IGNOU Admission Dates 2026

Event Date
July 2026 session, last date to apply 15 September 2026 (extended)
July 2026 re-registration, last date 15 September 2026 (extended)
January 2027 session, application opens December 2026 (tentative)
January 2027 session, last date to apply January 2027 (tentative)

The July 2026 deadline of 15 September 2026 reflects an extension from the original date. IGNOU has extended this deadline more than once in past sessions. An extension is common but never guaranteed.

January 2027 dates are projections based on previous cycles. IGNOU has announced nothing for that session.

Editor's Tip: Check the fee on the payment screen before you submit. IGNOU charges the registration fee alongside the programme fee, and the amount is non-refundable once paid. Take a screenshot of the confirmation and keep your application number, because you will need both if the payment fails midway.

IGNOU Admission Without Entrance Exam

IGNOU operates open admission for the large majority of its programmes. A candidate who meets the stated qualification is admitted. There is no competitive ranking against other applicants.

Open admission has four consequences for the applicant.

  • IGNOU publishes no cutoff score or percentile for open admission programmes.
  • IGNOU publishes no merit list for these programmes.
  • There is no seat allotment round and no counselling process.
  • Admission is confirmed after the university verifies the uploaded documents.

Programmes such as BA, B.Com, BCA, MA, M.Com, MBA and MSW admit without an entrance test. The same applies to the diploma and certificate programmes.

Programmes That Do Require an Entrance Test

Three routes are exceptions to open admission.

Programme Selection Route Portal
B.Ed IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Test ignou-bed.samarth.edu.in
PhD Research Entrance Test followed by interview ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in
Post Basic B.Sc Nursing All India entrance examination Announced separately by IGNOU

The main ODL admission portal does not handle entrance-test programmes. The Common Prospectus states this directly. Applicants to these three routes use the dedicated portal for that programme.

IGNOU Eligibility Criteria 2026

Eligibility depends on the programme level. The broad requirements appear below.

Programme Level Minimum Qualification Minimum Duration Maximum Duration
Undergraduate degree 10+2 or equivalent 3 years 6 years
Postgraduate degree Bachelor's degree 2 years 4 years
Diploma and PG Diploma As specified per programme 1 year 3 years
Certificate As specified per programme 6 months 2 years

Programmes approved by regulatory bodies carry their own duration rules. These bodies include the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The Five Subject Rule

This condition rejects more IGNOU applications than any percentage requirement. IGNOU accepts 10+2 only when the candidate passed in five subjects.

A Senior Secondary certificate with four subjects is not accepted. IGNOU applies this rule on the basis of a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) communication. The rule blocks admission to higher studies at IGNOU.

A candidate in this position has a route forward. They can complete one Senior Secondary level course from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). They can then apply to IGNOU.

Diploma Treated as 10+2 Equivalent

IGNOU recognises certain post-Class 10 diplomas as equivalent to 10+2. The qualifying awards come from State Boards of Technical Education, Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnics. A National Trade Certificate from the National Council for Vocational Training also qualifies.

Two conditions apply. The diploma must cover a minimum of five subjects. The equivalence does not extend to the B.Sc programme.

Age Limit

Most IGNOU programmes set no upper age limit. A learner of any age can apply. Some individual programmes state a minimum age, so the programme page is worth checking.

Editor's Tip: Do not assume the Bachelor's Preparatory Programme is still available. The BPP route once let candidates without 10+2 enter a degree programme, and many guides still describe it. IGNOU states that BPP is no longer on offer. If you lack 10+2 in five subjects, the NIOS route is the current path, not BPP.

Fresh Admission or Re-Registration?

This is the most common error IGNOU applicants make. The two processes are separate and serve different people.

Particulars Fresh Admission Re-Registration
Who applies New applicants joining a programme Existing students continuing a programme
Portal ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in onlinerr.ignou.ac.in
Registration fee INR 300, non-refundable Not charged
Documents Full set uploaded Not required again
What is paid Registration fee and programme fee Programme fee for the next year or semester

An existing student who applies for fresh admission creates a duplicate record. This confuses the academic record and can delay results. Students continuing the same programme must use the re-registration portal.

Re-registration applies when the previous year or semester is complete. The programme must still be within its maximum duration.

How to Apply for IGNOU Admission 2026?

The application process is fully online. IGNOU accepts no offline admission form for these programmes.

  • Visit the ODL admission portal at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.
  • Open the programme tab and read the eligibility, fee and duration for the chosen programme.
  • Download the Common Prospectus and read the Rules of the University in Section 10.
  • Click New Registration and create a username of 8 to 16 characters.
  • Set an alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters.
  • Submit the registration details and collect the username sent by email and SMS.
  • Log in and complete the application form.
  • Upload the scanned documents within the prescribed size limits.
  • Pay the fee by credit card, debit card or net banking.
  • Save or print the form preview for future reference.

Documents Required for IGNOU Admission 2026

Each upload carries a file size limit. The portal rejects oversized files.

Document Maximum File Size
Scanned photograph 100 KB
Scanned signature 100 KB
Age proof 200 KB
Relevant educational qualification 200 KB
Experience certificate, where applicable 200 KB
Category certificate for SC, ST or OBC 200 KB
Below Poverty Line certificate, where applicable 200 KB

Documents should be scanned from the originals. IGNOU asks applicants with a discrepancy to correct it within a stated time. Failure to do so leads to rejection of the admission form.

False or forged documents carry a heavier consequence. The university cancels the admission and refunds no fee. Cancellation can follow even after a degree has been awarded.

Fees Payable at Admission

Fee Head Amount Notes
Registration fee INR 300 Non-refundable, paid with the programme fee
Registration fee for Fixed Learning Intake Programmes INR 500 Non-refundable, paid at application
University Development fee INR 400 Paid at admission, additional to programme fee
Programme fee Varies by programme See the fee page for the applicable amount

The Fixed Learning Intake Programmes carrying the higher registration fee are PGDMCH, PGDGM, PGCMDM, CESEIVI, CESEIHI and CESEIID. Programme fees vary widely across 325 programmes. Check the current amount on the IGNOU Fees 2026 page. Fees are subject to revision by the university.

SC and ST students can claim a fee exemption. The exemption applies to one programme only in a given admission cycle. An applicant who submits more than one application claiming the exemption risks rejection of every application.

Rules That Get Applications Rejected

Four university rules catch applicants after they have paid.

  • Change of programme is not permitted. A student who wants a different programme must request cancellation and apply afresh. Any refund follows the university Refund Policy.
  • There is no direct admission to the second or third year. A candidate who completed one year elsewhere must join the first year. They can then apply for transfer of credits earned.
  • Lateral entry exists only where the programme provides it. The option appears during form submission when available.
  • Simultaneous registration carries conditions. A student in a programme elsewhere may register simultaneously in an IGNOU ODL or Online programme at UG or PG level. Examination schedules are not adjusted for any clash.

Simultaneous admission is barred for programmes under AICTE, NCTE and INC. It is also barred for collaborative programmes including BCOMAF, BCOMFCA, BECOMCAA, BHM, MCOMBPCG, MCOMMAFS, MCOMFT and MHA.

Editor's Tip: Read the programme page before you pay, not after. IGNOU does not let you switch programmes once admitted, so a wrong choice costs you the registration fee and a full session. Check the course list, the medium of instruction and the maximum duration. If you are unsure between two programmes, call the regional centre rather than guessing.

IGNOU Online Programmes Admission 2026

IGNOU runs 45 academic programmes through its own online learning management system. These are distinct from the ODL programmes. They use a separate admission portal at ignouiop.samarth.edu.in.

The July 2026 deadline of 15 September 2026 covers online programmes as well.

Particulars Details
Admission portal ignouiop.samarth.edu.in
Portal for foreign students ignouforeigniop.samarth.edu.in
Entrance exam Not required
Programmes offered 45 academic programmes
Session January and July
Study material Delivered digitally through the learning system

Recently launched online programmes include BCA, Master of Social Work, PG Diploma in Industrial Safety and PG Diploma in Environmental Studies. IGNOU also offers 268 courses through the SWAYAM platform.

Foreign students residing outside India apply through the foreign online programmes portal. Indian applicants use the standard online portal.

IGNOU B.Ed and PhD Admission 2026

These two programmes follow a different process from the rest of the university. Both require an entrance test. Both use a dedicated portal.

IGNOU B.Ed Admission

Admission is through the IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Test conducted by the university. Applications are submitted at ignou-bed.samarth.edu.in. IGNOU uploads hall tickets on its main website before the test.

B.Ed falls under NCTE regulation. The regulatory approval affects both the programme duration and the simultaneous admission rules described earlier.

IGNOU PhD Admission

Admission is through the Research Entrance Test, followed by an interview. Applications are submitted at ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in. The PhD cycle runs on an annual schedule rather than the twice-yearly session pattern.

Research scholars can take library membership by paying a refundable security deposit of INR 5,000. This provides lending services at the university library.

Why Choose IGNOU?

  • Admission is open for most programmes, so no entrance exam stands between an eligible candidate and a seat.
  • Two sessions each year mean a missed deadline costs six months rather than a full year.
  • There is no upper age limit on most programmes, which suits working professionals and late returners.
  • The registration fee is INR 300, so the upfront cost of applying is low.
  • Lateral entry is available where a programme provides it, which shortens the route for diploma holders.
  • The network covers 69 regional centres, over 2,000 learner support centres and 25 overseas centres in 15 countries.
  • Maximum duration is generous, giving six years to complete a three-year degree.

Why to Not Choose IGNOU?

  • Change of programme is not permitted after admission, so a wrong choice costs a full session and the fee paid.
  • There is no direct entry to the second or third year, even for candidates who completed a year elsewhere.
  • The five subject rule at 10+2 blocks many applicants who hold a valid Senior Secondary certificate.
  • Distance and online study demands self-discipline, because there is no daily classroom structure.
  • Deadline extensions are frequent, which makes planning harder and encourages applicants to delay.
  • Simultaneous admission is barred for a long list of regulated and collaborative programmes.

A note on reviews: Student reviews of IGNOU on public portals describe individual experiences of study material delivery, assignment evaluation and regional centre support. Read them for texture, not for policy. They are anecdotal opinions from single students. Where a review contradicts the Common Prospectus, treat the prospectus as correct.

Ques. How do I apply for IGNOU online programmes?

Ans. Online programmes use a separate portal at ignouiop.samarth.edu.in. Foreign students residing outside India apply at ignouforeigniop.samarth.edu.in. No entrance exam is required for these programmes.

Ques. Can SC and ST students get a fee exemption at IGNOU?

Ans. Yes. The exemption applies to one programme only within a given admission cycle. An applicant who submits more than one application claiming the exemption risks having every application rejected.

Ques. When will IGNOU January 2027 admission start?

Ans. IGNOU has not announced the January 2027 schedule. Based on previous cycles, applications typically open in December and close in January. The January 2027 Common Prospectus has not been released.

IGNOU Admissions: Students' Opinion

  • BSc
  • B.Lib.I.Sc
  • BCA
  • MA

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) program at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is straightforward and primarily online. The eligibility criteria require candidates to have passed their 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board, with specific subjects or a minimum percentage in certain courses. For instance, the B.Sc in Biochemistry honors requires 50% in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) subjects. There is no entrance examination for B.Sc admissions, streamlining the process for students.

The application is submitted via the IGNOU website, where candidates must upload Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and other necessary documents. Application timelines are flexible, often extending for late applicants with a nominal late fee. No cutoff ranks or scores apply, but the open learning structure attracts students needing flexibility, such as those preparing for other exams. Exams are conducted biannually with a 3-hour duration for each subject. The university operates on a credit-based system, and the open structure allows students to study remotely, utilizing resources like the e-Sarthi portal.

IGNOU is recognized for affordability, requiring only the registration fee and annual tuition, making it an attractive option for those seeking a distance learning setup. This option is particularly beneficial for students unable to attend regular classes or those from regions with limited university access.

what is difference between IGNOU study centre and regional centre?
S
Shikhar Srivas
Mar 28, 2024 23:06

Regional centres provide admission, textbooks, and results, among other things. Some courses are available for study in regional centres, but they are uncommon. Study centres are typically used for classes as well as the administration of theory and practical exams.
