What Students Say
Likes
- Placements are really good with high packages and top MNCs
- Jadavpur University don't have attendance requirements for theoretical subjects so students can level up their skills or prepare for competitive exams or placements in home. It reduces a lot of pressure of going to the college everyday.
- The fests in Jadavpur University are very versatile and engaging. There are fests like Srijan which itself is a tech fest where students can participate in the events and compete with others in order level up their skillset.
Dislikes
- Although college provides huge placement opportunities, but the infrastructure to get skillful in order to get those opportunities is somewhere missing in the course curriculum.
- As students volunteer to become placement coordinators during the placements, there are often so many disputes and irregularities happen.
- Student politics in the university can be a nightmare sometimes.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is so broad and sometimes not relevant to get a placement in our college. It's more theoretical than practical to solve real life problems in the industry. But if you're planning for higher studies it can be helpful because the curriculum has its own depth. I would suggest the university should arrange much more industrial visits including student expenses during visits. That way you can be relevant to the industrial work and gain more experiences. The frequency of timming of exams are somewhere around 50-50 good and bad. The semester timming can be good as students decide the routine of the exam. But the class tests and vivas are not well timmed as most of the class tests occur in the last weeks before the final exam.
Internships Opportunities
There are several types of roles in internship offered by the companies. Such as companies like CESC offers working on power distribution and energy management projects, Tata Power offers roles in power generation and renewable energy projects, NTPC Limited offers internship in thermal power plant operations and maintenance, Siemens offers roles in power automation and smart grid technologies. There are other companies that allows Power Engineering students to participate in their recruitment process such as Google offers position as software engineering intern, Amazon offers internship in software development and web services, Microsoft offers intern in software development and technical support, TCS offers internship in software development, data analysis and cybersecurity, Accenture offers roles related to technology and consulting.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placements in the 3rd year of the course during internship session. The companies that visit in the campus are CESC Limited, Texas Industries, NowPurchase, Airbus Early Bird, BNY Mellon, Wells Fargo, D. E. Shaw & Co, Optum, Schrodinger, Accenture. In 2023, the Highest Package was offered was INR 46.38 LPA and the Average Package was offered was INR 8.16 LPA. 94.44% eligible students were placed. I'd definitely prefer working for a MNC after I graduate.
Fees and Financial Aid
There is no tution fee in the Jadavpur University. It is the cheapest tier-1 engineering college in India which provides great campus placements and so many opportunities. As I'm in 2nd year of B.E. Power Engineering course, the total fees I had to pay was Rs. 710 INR only. Apart from that there are Full and Half Freeships are being offered based on students financial condition. You can also be eligible for student endowment scholarship upto Rs. 30000 INR. There are other scholarships also being offered such as SC/ST/OBC stipend Appr. 10000 pa, Kanyashree Prakalpa Rs. 25000 pa, SVMCM Rs. 60000 pa and other scholarships also. According to the Placements 2023, out of 36 eligible students 34 were placed with a placement percentage of 94.44% with Median Package INR 7 LPA, Average Package INR 8.16 LPA and Highest Package of INR 46.38 LPA. Our top recruiters were Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Schrodinger, Citi Bank, HSBC, DE Shaw India, Texas Industries.
Campus Life
There are several fests occur in Jadavpur University such as CIPPUS, U-Turn and other departmental freshers. The annual fest Sanskriti occurs around month of March-April includes events like Raag N Josh, Jam It, Tarana, Natalaya, Ghoongrooz, Moon Walk, Rendition, Dance Bout, Rap Battle, Beat Box, Guitar Wars, Instrumental also other off stage events like Think twice, Graffiti Wars, Shoot at Sight, Inquizzitive, Sketchophile, Origami, Rangoli, Creative Writting. There are also tech fests like Srijan, Convolution. We also include football and other sport events in our fests. There is a separate tournament called ARENA for Cricket only. The libraries in both campuses are well organised and rich with content. There are clubs like Code club JU, Mountaining club, photographic club, chess club, music club, dance club, debating society, etc.
Admission
Jadavpur University accepts admission through WBJEE and JELET examination. I was admitted through JELET. Where the cut off of Power Engineering in Jadavpur University was around 78 rank for General candidates and 301 rank for SC candidates. You can check the updates in wbjee.in if you're preparing for JELET or WBJEE examination. The counseling was too much delayed in 2023 JELET examination. For that reason I had get admitted mid way of 3rd semester where more than 50 syllabus was being covered already. If the result and counseling process is done on time then the students would be less pressurized during 3rd semester.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is relatively good for my batch. The teachers in the faculty of B.E. Power Engineering are highly qualified for the post. But there are some teachers who teaches very well and if you consider meeting them in the office to discuss any problem you're facing related to the subject, they are very engaging and won't hesitate to solve your problem. But there teachers who qualify very well for the post but lacks in teaching in the class. You might have to visit YouTube or any other source to understand the subject. At last the mentorship program is too bad in our university that teachers might ask you to fill the form and state your problems in the form for formality and records but they don't really arrange a session for yourself, where you can share your problems with the mentor. They sometimes conduct sessions where other students are being present and you're being asked to share your problems in front of them.
