Remarks

JMC is a great college to study in if you want to pursue academics in the future as the entire campus vibe is like that. It still feels like school a lot of times because of numerous restrictions on the campus and hence may feel boring as compared to other DU colleges.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The curriculum is standard for all colleges of Delhi University. It is the way the subject is taught that can make you fall in love with the subject. Economics is not an easy subject to understand. If you want to properly understand the concepts of Macro and especially Microeconomics, then you would have to read additional books apart from what is prescribed in the syllabus. The undergraduate syllabus is designed only to lay a foundation. It is not built in a way that can be used in a job as such. JMC as a college is also very academic, if you wish to pursue higher studies then JMC is a good college to consider since the approach is very academic. It is taught to make you understand the subject, however, the relevance of it all is not told as such. The young professors are more eager to teach and learn. They make for better teachers than some old professors who just readout of their notes not making much effort in making the teaching interesting. The college took the initiative of collaborating with Warwick university to arrange a small course on Game Theory which is one of the most interesting concepts of Economics. That course was very engaging. Moreover, frequent debates were organized by the department. The topics of the debate were also very relevant, however, the format and the structure of the debates were old-school and not parliamentary which is how debates are conducted generally in colleges. The departmental fests are a good way of expanding your knowledge and applying concepts in real-life situations. However, since the subject is very tough, the initiative has to be taken by students and college is usually not very supportive. The industrial knowledge is hardly given and there were no industrial visits organized by the college.

Placement Experience

2.5

The placement cell is not that great as even though it is run by students, it is headed by a teacher and the institute being very academic, does not invest in placements. Deloitte, NIIT, Mckinsey, PwC and some other small firms had visited the college for placements during my year. There is a pre-placement talk held by every company, followed by a test and multiple rounds of interviews. The institute does not prepare the students for anything. In fact, a lot of companies are not even invited by the college. Internships are very bleak. There may be a few emails and a few posters that you may see around the campus but apart from that, there is no special effort made by the college per se. Mostly students of Commerce and Economics get placements. About 60-70% students get placed because of their aptitude.

College Events

3

Montage is the biggest fest held every year. It is one of the most happening fests in South Campus. The organization of the fests start way in advance. Students fully engage themselves in organizing the fest and teachers also for a change are supportive here. The fests are properly managed, there is no entry without a pass or a college ID. There is proper frisking at the entrance itself since it is a girls'college, safety is paramount. Other fests like societal and departmental fests are also organized very well, however, there is not much support from the college during these. Everything in societal and departmental fests have to be done by the students and the teachers do not make the process any easy. There is a strict policy of the college closing at 7 PM and hence, all fests (societal and departmental) have to get over by then. This rule is not applicable for Montage, however, people start leaving at decent hours. Participation in Montage is really good. Every student of the college is involved in some or the other way.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fees are very affordable, given that it is a government college, however, slightly pricier than other DU colleges. Payment for the fees is mostly either done online or in the bank. Examination fees are charged separately and that has to be given every semester. There is complete transparency in the fee-breakdown.

Fees and Financial Aid

The college does give out scholarships to students and that is only given if you have topped the course. There are other types of awards and scholarships also given by the institute to deserving candidates coming from reserved categories.

Campus Life

3

JMC is a girls college. Professors are 90% females only. A few Ad-Hoc professors are male. The crowd is diverse. However, given that it is a Christian college and relaxation in terms of percentage is given to Christians, the Christian population of the college is high. However, students from all ethnicity can be seen here. Extracurricular activities are present, but not the number is not that high. All the societies that are present in the college are very hard-working and the students in those societies are extremely talented. The western dance society - mudra is one of the best societies in the college and students practice for more than 4 hours every day apart from attending classes. It is considered a very big thing if one is selected in society as multiple rounds are held to before a student is selected. Debsoc is also very good. It is a fairly new society but the students won laurels and they are very talented so it does not feel as if the society is new. Sports are encouraged and students in the sports department practice rigorously every day and they win many inter-collegiate competitions.

Alumni/Alumna

The Alumni network of college is not that great. There is so proper system in place wherein old students can interact with the current batch and give some advice. Hence, interaction with old students is very limited.

Admission

Economics Honours is one of the most prestigious courses offered by Delhi University. Studying Economics opens up a lot of opportunities and you also get to understand how the economy works a lot better. I had gotten a percentage of 96 (best of four) which opened a lot of options for me. JMC was recommended by one professor of Hindu college when I had gone there to seek admission in History. I had got through JMC for Economics Hons in the 1st list itself but I had not heard a lot about the college so was not sure, whether I should take admission here or not. After consulting different people, I took the decision of taking admission here. The admission process is fairly simple as any college in DU. You need to go to the college with your documents and fill in the forms.

Faculty

3.5

The number of lecturers is decent. We had 6-7 professors in the Economics department. The average age would be 45 since some professors are very old and have been teaching for more than 15 years and some are very young and they had just started teaching. The old teachers are very knowledgeable, however, their pedagogy is strictly standard and not interesting as they have very old notes through which they teach the subjects. The new professors are more enthusiastic and even though they do not have all the answers to the questions, they would make an extra effort to get the answers and make the subject more relevant to the present scenario for the students. In terms of knowledge, all the professors were very good. It mostly comes down to the way of teaching, which varied from professor to professor.

Course Curriculum Overview:

It DU, so i think for many students it comes down to if you are able to make it to cutt off list. So my decision was based on it. I cleared the cutt off list for english hons so i took it. I wanted to make my way for govt job, so it was all about getting a degree regardless of what subject i was getting. I think curriculum just make you educated enough to get to know but its the college life that make you come face to face with the real world. exams every 6 months i.e every semester i think its good.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I really like Human Geography which let me to opt for this paper. Besides theory papers, we also have practical papers every semester through which we conduct surveys, interviews, research which helps us in preparing for the real world applications as well as further academic pursuits if we want to go in the field of Remote sensing or GIS. I feel that for papers including research or management, we should be showcasing how we can mitigate them or adapt in such scenarios and also make drafts for writing a research for further pursuits. However, as the time is limited it is quite understandable as to why its not conducted. We have two exams in a year and they are quite relevant and easy

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is good and may be seen as average in aspect of my college . I selected my course as I saw myself holding potential in the field of language , English was my strong interest. The curriculum prepares a basic and needed knowledge for everyone accordingly and yes , it may be seen as an important aspect in higher education, experiences from professors and teachers is shared by live demonstrations and examples in order to achieve a good understanding. The improvement in the curriculum may be that of a much regular based classes as there is a frequent cut in classes and sometimes some teachers may slack during the day cancelling classes and stuff . The frequency of exams and timings are arranged and not much complicated related to my course and difficulty may be considered moderate .
