To become a government teacher there are certain prerequisites as per qualification need to be acquired by any aspiring candidates. In general, for becoming a government teacher candidates must complete at least their graduation in any stream. After which they should mandatorily pursue a B.Ed or Diploma in Elementary Education degree from any recognized college or university. The average salary of a government teacher across primary schools in India can range from INR 2.60 LPA – 5 LPA. The CTET and TET exams are the two major entrance exams that must be cleared by the applicants aspiring to become government teachers. There are two papers, Paper I and Paper II in the CTET or TET. How to Become a Government Teacher after 12th

Some of the crucial steps that are to be followed to become a Government Teacher after the 12th are discussed below for your reference,

  • UG Preparation: After completing class 12 board exams with at least 60% aggregate marks they have to then appear for entrance exams to pursue B.Ed. These entrance exams are TET/CTET or STET according to their course and qualification. 
  • PG Preparation: After doing B.Ed. candidates can also opt for an M.Ed. for higher studies as some schools also look for teachers who have higher experience and education level like teachers with PG degrees.

Courses to Become a Government Teacher

There are many courses to become a government teacher. Some of them are as follows,

Diploma in Elementary Education

This is a 2-year diploma training course for candidates who want to teach students of pre-primary classes. For pursuing this course candidates must have done 10+2 with at least 60% aggregate marks from a recognized board. After this candidate can pursue this diploma course and become a government teacher.

Bachelor of Education

This is a 3-year degree course for candidates who want to become government teachers and teach secondary or senior secondary classes. This degree course could be done after completing 10+2 with at least 50% marks or after doing any graduation degree.

Bachelor of Physical Education

This is also a 3-year degree course for the candidate who wants to become a government physical education teacher. For pursuing this degree candidates must have done 10+2 from a recognized board with at least 50% aggregate marks.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education

This is a 4-year course to become a government teacher. It is a combination course for candidates who want to pursue teaching. For this candidates must have done 10+2 from a recognized board with at least 50% aggregate marks with English as the main subject.

Entrance Exams

There are various entrance exams conducted for teaching as a profession by national and state governments.

  • TET is a teacher eligibility test conducted by the state government. This exam is divided into two levels. After clearing it, different levels of candidates are allocated to teach the classes according to the level of the exam they have cleared.
  • CTET is a central teacher eligibility test conducted by the central government for CBSE. It is conducted twice in one year. This is also divided into 2 papers.
  • STET is a state teacher eligibility test conducted by the state for teachers who want to work in their state only.
  • NET is a national eligibility test conducted by universities for the appointment of professors. This test is applicable to candidates who have cleared their master’s degrees.
