BA Psychology Admission Process in India

A BA in psychology has different admission processes according to the institutions. Such as central, state, private universities, and direct admission processes.

Central University Admission Process

Most of the central universities in India take admission through the CUET UG exam. The first step includes registration and appearing for the CUET examination. After the declaration of the results or scorecard, students can apply to the counselling process and select their preferred institution. At last, students can secure their seats, followed by document verification and fee payment.

State University Admission Process

Many of the state universities provide admission based on merit (Class 12 marks), but several may also conduct their own entrance examination.

The typical admission process for state universities includes:

  • Fill out the online application form.
  • Upload academic documents.
  • A merit list is prepared using Class 12 marks.
  • Attend counselling (if applicable).
  • Pay admission fees.
  • Verify documents

Private University BA Psychology Admission Process

Private universities in India follow one of three admission routes:

  1. Merit-based solely on Class 12 marks
  2. Entrance-mode followed by personal interview or counselling processes
  3. Holistic admission, followed by some universities (O.P. Jindal Global University), will evaluate academic performance, Statement of Purpose (SOP), personal interview, entrance test, and extracurricular achievements.

Ques. Why study a BA in psychology?

Ans. BA Psychology is an UG programme that studies human behaviour, emotions, cognition, personality, development, relationships and mental processes. The course combines theoretical learning with research methods, statistics, psychological experiments, case studies, fieldwork and practical assignments. It is also important to note that BA Psychology is primarily a foundational academic degree and does not, by itself, qualify a graduate to practise as a clinical psychologist.

Ques. What is the duration of a BA in psychology in India in 2026?

Ans. A BA in Psychology can be either a 3-year or a 4-year UG programme, depending on the university’s implementation of the NEP 2020 and the UGC framework. Under the NEP/UGC framework, students may receive the following:

  • A UG certificate after one year, subject to credit and vocational-course requirements
  • A UG diploma after two years
  • A bachelor’s degree after three years
  • A bachelor’s degree with honours after four years
  • A bachelor’s degree with honours and research after completing the prescribed research component

The implementation of multiple entry and exit options can differ between universities. Students should check the exact programme structure before applying.

Ques. Can science and commerce students apply for BA Psychology?

Ans. Students from any stream can apply to the BA Psychology programme, as psychology in Class 12 is not universally compulsory. For example, Fergusson College states that candidates from any Class 12 stream can apply for its BA Psychology programme. At Delhi University, candidates must follow the programme-specific CUET combination and appear in subjects they studied or passed in Class 12. Therefore, students should verify the individual university’s subject-mapping rules.

Direct Admission in BA Psychology

Most of the private colleges offer direct admission based on Class 12 marks, without requiring any entrance exam.

The process of direct admission includes

  • Apply through the official college website.
  • Submit the Class 12 marksheet and required documents.
  • Meet the minimum eligibility criteria.
  • Pay the admission fee after selection.
  • Complete document verification.

Direct admission is generally offered based on:

  • Class 12 marks
  • Seat availability
  • Institution-specific eligibility

Types of BA Psychology Courses in India

  • Full-time/Regular BA Psychology: The full-time BA in psychology takes 3 years to complete. It covers fundamentals of psychology, including human behaviour, cognition, personality, counselling, and research methods.
  • BA (Hons) Psychology: As per the NEP 2020, this programme is for 4 years. It is an advanced honours programme with greater emphasis on research, internships, electives, and multidisciplinary learning. Students may also graduate with an honours with research degree after meeting university requirements.
  • Integrated BA + MA Psychology: This is a 5-year programme which combines undergraduate and postgraduate psychology studies into a single programme. It also offers advanced specialisation and research exposure.

Ques. Is mathematics mandatory for BA Psychology?

Ans. Mathematics is not a compulsory subject for BA Psychology; however, students will be studying statistics and quantitative research methods during this programme. The subjects will cover topics such as mean, median, standard deviation, correlation, probability, hypothesis testing, research design and interpretation of psychological data. The mathematical level is usually manageable with regular practice, but students should not select psychology with the expectation that the course will contain no numerical work.

Ques. What is the difference between BA Psychology, BA Psychology Honours and BA Applied Psychology?

Ans. BA Psychology is offered as a general, major or combination programme and can include subjects from more than one discipline, whereas BA Psychology Honours offers more in-depth knowledge of psychology. And the BA Applied Psychology places greater emphasis on applying psychological concepts in areas such as counselling, health, education, organisations, communities and human welfare.

FAQ’s

Ques. Can BA Psychology be pursued through online or distance education in 2026?

Ans. No, a BA in Psychology cannot be pursued through online or distance education in 2026, as in August 2025, UGC declared that no higher education institution would be permitted to offer Psychology as a specialisation through ODL or online mode from the July–August 2025 academic session onwards. Recognition already granted for such upcoming admissions was also to be withdrawn.

Ques. Can one become a psychologist after completing BA Psychology?

Ans. No, one cannot become a psychologist after completing a BA Psychology degree, as it only provides the academic foundation for a psychology career and is not sufficient for independent professional practice. Most positions carrying the title of psychologist require at least a relevant master’s degree, practical training and experience. Regulated roles, especially clinical psychology, require qualifications and registration specified by the relevant statutory authority. A graduate should not conduct diagnosis, psychological treatment or clinical assessment without the necessary competence, supervision and professional qualifications.

Ques. Can one become a clinical psychologist after BA Psychology?

Ans. No. BA Psychology alone does not qualify a person to work as an RCI-registered clinical psychologist, as it requires an RCI-recognised qualification from an approved institution and obtaining active registration in the Central Rehabilitation Register.

Ques. How can one become a counselling psychologist after BA Psychology?

Ans. A common pathway is

  • Complete BA Psychology or Psychology Honours
  • Pursue MA or MSc Psychology, Counselling Psychology or an allied specialisation.
  • Complete supervised internships and practical training
  • Build skills in counselling theories, ethics, interviewing and case documentation
  • Work under appropriate supervision before taking independent responsibilities

Eligibility standards vary between schools, universities, NGOs, hospitals and private organisations. Students should distinguish counselling roles from the RCI-regulated clinical psychologist category and should not perform clinical diagnosis without the prescribed qualifications.

Faculty is descent... Some didn't teach anything but some teachers are there wo very well teaches... Some miss classes very frequently.. But some seriously takes classes.... Total we have 7 exams.. But i don't think so exam pattern is fair enough as every year same questions are being asked, repeated questions are copied each year then what's the benefit of so called exams if we know that these specific questions are gonna come in exam

The extraxcurriculars in this unievrsity is one of the top experience i have had in here. there are vast array of options you can choose from in terms of selecting a club. there are club opoortunites for every hobby and interest, along with great growth also. They have 2 fest annually called as blossoms and darpan and it is basically competetion based fests where different departments compete for the trophy. Talking about the infrastrcuture especially the library, it is very well curated and consist of ample of good books and journals according to your interest , it is divided into various sections like philosophy, fiction , non fiction etc lastly in the classroom there is a projector and faculties generally use them to present the ppt from which they teach.

Faculty

Faculty Members are very approachable in terms of carrer guidance and asking for doubts. Personally they are very fun to be with. In the 3rd semester they start something called as LCA course where the class gets divided into 3 halves which means 3 faculties for 1 class, this ensures that every student is being heard and understood. There are 3 types of exams: CIA , Mid sems and End sems. CIA is contibuous internal assessment. it is mostly assignment based like either you will have to do a case study or poster or a report. Mid sems are for 25 marks and end sem 50. 5 marks is for attendance as well. Lastly coming to marking scheme, so your result comes in terms of 4 CGPA.

Since I am enrolled in BA programme the practical exposure is not great its mostly theory based learning. Hence, joining internships is essential as it gives you an understanding of the real world. We have our end sems twice in one year, if you are well prepared it's not difficult since the paper pattern is direct

Fees and Financial Aid

For my course the fee is around 26k, considering it's for a whole year and a government college with great faculty and infrastructure the amount I am paying is justifiable. The fees for my batchmates is more or less the same, even less than what I pay. Our college also provides financial aid.

Meraki fest was conducted last time and on 31st October English Fest Proscenium is conducted. It has several stalls for gamings like guessing the name of a movie by emoji and guessing actors name by their dialogues. It was a complete Theatre Fest. The books are very easily accessible to every student who has a library card. The library has wide variety of books and journals. Classrooms are with smart boards for more interactive teaching and learning. The tablets are provided in the reading room to students. Their was a recent atheletic meet where many sports are opened for students. Marathon was conducted.Students run social groups like Ajeevan Samarpan Parivar(NGO).It involves a overall development of a student in their life.

Faculty

The faculty to student ratio is 3:85 and the assistant professor and HOD are very nice to students. The faculty is approachable even after the classes. They also help students to get their career guidance. The faculty I like the most is Saksham Sir (Assistant Professor of Psychology). He is always there to solve the doubts of his students and to guide them. He always keeps the class very interactive. All the faculty in psychology is good. There are 2 Unit Tests and 1 semester exam. The exams are of moderate level. The students who are always non-attentive tends to face difficulties in exam as they are very easy. The course is updated according to current competative exams.

Placements in the colleges of Delhi University's South Campus are generally strong, particularly for students from commerce, economics, and professional courses. The colleges have dedicated placement cells that work to attract a wide range of companies for recruitment drives. The overall placement scenario depends heavily on the specific college and course. Top colleges like Sri Venkateswara College, Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD), and Jesus and Mary College (JMC) consistently report good placement statistics.

i chose psychology because i've always felt drawn towards it and journalism comes naturally to me, the curiosity, the research and reporting. my love for literature, thanks to my mum; the curriculum does prepare you for the world in some way, not fully but yea somewhere along there. the teaching methods from the faculty of the department are pretty good but we occasionally have dse and ge courses where the new faculty is sometimes hard to understand.

Fees and Financial Aid

60,000/- for two semesters (one academic year) tuition fees add up to about 56,000/- admission fees needs to be paid separately depending on the course you choose development and other charges add up to about 3000-4000/- the college offers a management scholarship depending on your grades and attendance percentage, if they're satisfactory, the student gets 5000/- to 15,000/- scholarships

Faculty

My course faculty is weird. They are very reserved and are not as open as i would have expected. Plus there are only 9 professors in my course and the HOD is a pain in the ass for sure. But i would say they are kind and helpful and lenient when we beg for extensions. I really Reshma maam, she is the kindest soul i know and she has helped me alot be it in studies or life or with my emotional and mental stress. I dont like Joan maam, she hates me for no reason, very strict for someone who is teaching in college, if it was school it would have made sense but for college level she is too strict, she shows alot of favourism. So for me i only had 5 papers out of 6 cuz my SEC was only practical and no theory. Exams are pretty much straightforward and okay only. Some do fail but mainly because they did not appear for the paper. Otherwise papers are usually easy if u study for it

Course Curriculum Overview

For psychology everything is good, the course the topics everything is very real world applications based. However there is less scope for it in india but in abroad one can do well. I really like learning about mental disorders, they open a new world to me and a better understanding of the people with disabilities. For Areas of improvement all i can suggest is giving lesser readings, since there is a lot of readings to cover it becomes a headache for some students. Also there shoulf be more practical based subjects rather thsn just theory ones.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yearly fees is around 17000-18000. On comparison with my batchmates , it was found to be similar for everyone. This fee structure is fair and affordable. The college, as such does not require any additional fee, just the travel expenses if you are from Delhi and living expenses for the students from different states.

Course Curriculum Overview

I've B.A (Psychology and philosophy) as my course. According to NEP you can do majors in psychology from 2nd year onwards and this will be decided on the basis of your result. Only 1st 90 students will be able to secure psychology seat and out of this 1st 45 students will haved aided course and 2nd half will have unaided course i.e they have to pay more than the 1st half but the faculty would be the same and the class is also same for both the halves. Ques. Can I do BA with psychology after dropping 2nd yr Diploma in engineering?

● Top Answer By Advait Joshi on 24 May 23

Ans. It's understandable that you may be considering a change in your field of study, especially as a 2nd-year student. To determine if psychology is the right fit for you, first, you should do some research and gain a better understanding of the field. While many people consider this field as cool and interesting, the reality is far from this.  Psychology is a difficult field unless you are genuinely interested in it and are certain about pursuing a career in it. A career is a long-term shot and you should be determined to go for a PhD from a top institute. Many times people are attracted to a certain field only to find later that they just wanted a way out of engineering. It's very necessary to do a self-analysis. Also, I would like to clear the misconception that you don't have to get your bachelors in the same field as your master's. Unless you are planning to get a master's or doctorate, a bachelor's in psychology is not an easy degree to find a comfortable living after graduating. You can just take a minor in psychology in order to meet the eligibility criteria to enter many graduate school programs. But, if you want to pursue a research-based Ph.D. program you will likely need to get actual research experience, which may be harder if you only did a minor. Additionally, you can read up on the latest research and articles in psychology, and explore different subfields of psychology, such as clinical, developmental, social, and cognitive psychology. It's important to remember that changing majors can be a big decision, and it may take some time to determine if psychology is right for you.Read more

● Top Answer By Anonymous on 02 Dec 24

Ans. Truly speaking I did my research and applied to this college as thier were amazing psychology and journalism faculty in the department but they eventually left after the 1st semester. I have just applied at Presidency and I got the seat. So, you can apply on the college portal for a interview round if you clear the criteria of 75% and above. Less than that you have to apply from management quota. A basic round of interview will take place regarding a background & document verification during the interview. They will ask you why did you choose this course and what made you choose this college. Very basic questions will be asked.Read more

Ques. How is the course curriculum of Bachelor of Arts [BA] (Psychology) in Presidency College Bangalore?

● Top Answer By Anonymous on 02 Dec 24

Ans. I joined the batch knowing the fact that it is under Bangalore University but when we attended the first day of our batch. It was declared that we were autonomous batch. We remained the lab rats to experiment. I felt there were too many unnecessary subject which were introduced as extra paper and what you study in college is very different from what is required in the job market. The exams were held on regular basis. First they should focus on getting a stable faculties. The curriculum and guest lecture should be based on real demands of the job rather than just getting too many guest lecturers.Read more
