Types of Admission Routes in India

Admission Route Important Exams/Examples How It Works
National-Level Entrance Examination CUET UG Used by the University of Delhi and other participating universities. Candidates take CUET and then complete the concerned university's admission/counselling process.
University-Level Entrance Examination JMI Entrance Test, AMU Admission Test, CHRIST Entrance Test, GGSIPU CET The university conducts or specifies its own examination and prepares the selection/merit list according to programme rules.
Merit-Based Admission Class 12/academic-score merit Some universities admit students using qualifying-examination scores. Presidency University's 2026 English programme falls under its merit-based Category A route.
Counselling-Based Admission DU CSAS, GGSIPU centralised counselling, AMU counselling Entrance-qualified candidates register preferences, participate in allocation/counselling and complete document verification and fee payment.
Three Myths Busted
  • Myth: Only humanities students can study BA English. Science and Commerce students are also eligible at many institutions, subject to their Class 12 and English/subject rules.
  • Myth: BA English only leads to teaching. Graduates also enter writing, publishing, journalism, editing, public relations, communications and digital content roles.
  • Myth: Every BA English admission is through CUET UG. Universities such as JMI, AMU, CHRIST and GGSIPU use their own admission mechanisms, while some programmes use Class 12 merit.

BA (English) Admission Process

  • Qualifying Examination: Class 12/10+2 from a recognised board. Around 50% aggregate is a common requirement, but the minimum varies by institution.
  • Eligible Streams: Humanities, Commerce and Science students are accepted at many institutions; English and subject-mapping requirements must be checked separately.
  • Entrance Exams: Apply for CUET UG, JMI Entrance Test, AMU Admission Test, CHRIST Entrance Test or GGSIPU CET where applicable.
  • Entrance Result: Download the scorecard/check the merit or selection list after the examination.
  • Counselling/Application: Register on the concerned university admission system and submit programme/college preferences where required.
  • Seat Allocation: Allocation depends on entrance score/rank, eligibility, preferences, category and seat availability.
  • Document Verification: Class 10 and 12 certificates, marksheets, identity documents, photographs and category certificates, where applicable.
  • Seat Confirmation: Accept the allocated seat and pay the prescribed admission fee within the deadline.
  • Merit Route: Entrance testing is not universal. For example, Presidency University, Kolkata's 2026 English programme was under the academic-merit category A route.

Top BA (English) Colleges in India

Ques. What percentage is required for BA English after Class 12?

Ans. Around 50% aggregate is a common benchmark, but there is no single national minimum. Some institutions use different thresholds, while entrance-based universities also consider the candidate's exam score or rank.

Ques. Is CUET UG compulsory for BA English?

Ans. No. CUET UG is compulsory for routes such as University of Delhi undergraduate admission, but JMI, AMU, CHRIST and GGSIPU have separate programme-specific admission mechanisms. Some universities also use academic merit.

Ques. What is a good CUET score for BA English?

Ans. There is no reliable single score for all colleges. Admission depends on the university, college, category, subject combination, programme demand and the year's allocation scores. Students should compare their score with the 2026 programme-specific allocation/cut-off data rather than using an older fixed target.

Ques. Which CUET subjects are required for DU B.A. (Hons.) English in 2026?

Ans. DU's 2026 eligibility provides two combinations: English + any three List B subjects, or English + one other List A language + any two List B subjects. Candidates must take CUET subjects consistent with subjects studied and passed in Class 12, as specified by DU.

Ques. What is the difference between BA English and BA (Hons.) English?

Ans. BA English may offer a broader undergraduate structure, while B.A. (Hons.) English generally provides greater disciplinary depth in literature, language, criticism and related areas. Under the current undergraduate framework, programme names and 3-year/4-year exit structures vary by university.

Ques. Which subjects are generally studied in BA English?

Course Curriculum Overview

The BA English curriculum at the Central University of Karnataka is comprehensive and academically relevant. The course covers British Literature, American Literature, Indian Writing in English, Literary Theory, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies, providing students with a strong foundation in language and literature. The interdisciplinary approach under NEP and the availability of electives were among the factors that influenced my decision to choose this course.

Campus Life

My overall campus experience at the Central University of Karnataka has been positive. The university has a diverse student community with students from different states, which creates a vibrant social environment and encourages cultural exchange. Various cultural programmes, seminars, workshops, and student activities are conducted throughout the academic year, providing opportunities for students to showcase their talents

A good experience studing B.A psychology, Criminology and English optional. I joined with my focus on psychology but the English Department made me fall in love with English literature. I really appreciate the teachers from the English Department for encouraging students to step out of their box and try new things. The teachers encourage the students to be opinionated and give their views without hesitation and make us reflect on our views and reasoning. Overall i am very satisfied with the course.

Faculty

I really appreciate the faculty as a whole. I really appreciate the lecturers of English department for pushing us to do better and be opinionated and to form an opinion of ourselves. They helped me reflect and understand my reasoning. They encourage students to be well read and well articulated.

Faculty

The faculty for my department is really good and they are mostly approachable, whether you want to ask your queries regarding the course or any other issues. I love Dr Moumita Sarkar's teaching method the best as it is thoroughly planned and organised from the start of the semester to the end of it. There are three core papers and one general elective with three other electives-AEC, VAC, SEC. The difficulty level of exams is not that high, however, scoring high depends on the reading and extra effort put in for the exam.

The annual fest is called Priyadarshini which takes place around the months of Feb and March. It is a cultural fest with competitions involving art, music jamming and performances and dance too. Faculty

Faculty to student ratio is good as there is 118 students in my class but most of the students don't come in class so the ratio becomes 2:1 . Faculties are always cooperative with the students, they always teach us by giving examples and its practical use .khu Suman Sinha Maa'm is one of my favourite professorin my college. She helps me a lot . Whenever i need help she helps. Khushboo maa'm is the one that i don't like because she always taunt me on the small thing and matter . There are two exams in a whole year namely semester 1 and semester 2 exam is not so difficult but we find difficult because we have to study harder as our maa'm don't tell us the portion from where she will ask question . Noone get failed in exam not a single students because our teachers passed them with the good grade . Course curriculum is relevant as everything is done according to the govt. rule as my college is fully govt. college .

Fees and Financial Aid

I pay 6000 per year fees to my college but fees may vary as my college used to increase their fees ever year with some rupees depending upon their expenses. tution fees taken by the college for B.A students is negligible. They just charge the admission fees and then exam fees and so on. They don't charge any extraa fees from students other than this . registration and admission fees - 2855 rupees for S.C student there is relaxation in fees. General have to pay 5000 whereas S.C pays ony 3000 these kind of relaxation is there . we don't need any kind of scholarship as our fees is negligible but other departments students avail bihar student credit card scheme by which they get their money to pay to the college at minimum interest i.e. 4% per annum after completing the course where they enrolled .

Internships Opportunities

Well here in this college we do get opportunity for various type of jobs if you have good CGPA it depends on your CGPA like how you have performed in your semester and what type of behavior you had with professor . This is the main reason for this and whenever you get a chance to get over it and take opportunity because that's how things work and even after sometime you get placement but don't get depend on your places only because in sales department placement is a scam if you are in soo need then you should go their otherwise noo

Faculty

Fees and Financial Aid

It was a wonderful experience studying in Delhi University. I pursued English (hons) from school of Open learning but the study material was very rich. I never purchased refrence books alll through my Graduation years. It was so impactful and content was so practical that i still remember all my course content. I paid approximately 9000 Rupees every year and it included all other expenses like tuition fees, etc.. My Batchmates paid the same fees as mine. There were good amount of Scholarships and other financial aids available at that moment but fortunately i never accessed them. I got the admission on Merit basis ie. 75 % above in class 12th borad exam and above 85 marks in English subject. I Really miss my Graduation Days !!!

Course Curriculum Overview

Curriculum was verey much Comprehensive. I wanted to accomplish this course at any cost because of my excellent flair in this language adding to my Interest. It actually broadened by Mental Horizon and shaped my thinking perception. It also helped me in my Academic pursuits not only for me but also for my kids as well. It also helped me in widening my own Knowledge and buit my awareness regarding many issues we face in our daily lives. As such there are no serious concerns for improvrment. The difficulty level of Examinations is immensely higher than other courses and it braeks student's confidence too. The level has to brought down else it won't be a Piece of cake for average students anymore !

Fees and Financial Aid

Fee Arrangements (Annual) and Scholarship Information General Fee and Trend of the Course: The total fee charged at Prof. Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) University, Prayagraj, is usually very cheap as opposed to other privately owned entities. My personal experience shows that the fees increased a bit, gradually, during the last couple of yearsaveraging something between 5 to 10 per cent per year. Such an increase is normally blamed on inflation and the fact that the University is trying to upgrade facilities and resources. Fees yearly (rough idea of a typical undergraduate degree of B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.): 1 st year: 4400-6000 2 nd year: 4500-6500 3 rd year: 5000-7000

Faculty

Faculty-to-student ratio at Prof. Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) University can change depending on the subject, but despite that, the professors tend to be very knowledgeable. in most cases, having a PhD, and there are many, which are easy to approach and make you feel encouraged. Most of the courses taught at the university are based on the NEP 2020 syllabus, which is also aimed at being balanced.

Course Curriculum Overview

I am really impressed by my course curriculum. My English hons course is expanding my knowledge to various aspects on literature and it's history. And I think this is preparing me nicely for future outing in the outer world to compete in today's society as english is a must know language nowadays. Exams duration is 3 hourse per exam sometimes it varies according to subject and they are not so difficult I guess.

Fees and Financial Aid

The Fee structure of my college is affordable and especially for my course, I think it's really good as compared to the quality of education and facilities provided to us by the management and professors. It varies according to different caste. Particularly, my fees is 8890/ year. No such scholarships are provided but financial aids are provided to students from financially weak background.

Faculty

Most of the faculty are very approachable and reasonable. They're highly qualified teachers. The faculty-to-student ratio is approximately 60-1, or even less. My English department faculty includes Mrs Aparna Raveendran, who is hands-down the best teacher to have ever graced Mithibai. Next, I would like to talk about Dr. Shweta Salian, who is a very reliable and reasonable teacher who has been teaching most of us since our first year. Both these teachers are masters of their respective fields. The exams get difficult as you keep moving years. The second year exams were tougher than the first year, etc. The course curriculum is intriguing and keeps students interested.

Mithibai houses the Mithibai Cultural Committee, which is divided into multiple teams - Mithibai Music Team, Mithibai Dance Team, Mithibai Fashion Team, Mithibai Literary Arts Team, Drama Team and many more. I have been a part of the Mithibai Music Team for 3 years now, and I have seen many exciting opportunities to grow. I had the chance to visit the Bombay IIT Campus for their festival, Mood Indigo.

Ques. What are the minimum marks required to get admitted to Calicut University for a BA in English literature?

● Top Answer By Priyank Jaiswal on 29 Oct 22

Ans. It is determined by the number of seats available at the college. Calicut University does not conduct exams properly, and your grades will not be corrected. This means that the student who studies the best in class and the student who did not study for the exam get nearly the same grade.  The university doesn't even properly correct the papers. It's also evident in newspaper articles about the majority of students failing a university exam. Your semester exams will be held on an irregular basis. That is, if you are in the third semester, you may write for the first semester.  Furthermore, if you fail at some point in the third semester and all of the other semesters succeed, it will take years for you to pass the exam because the supplementary exam is not given frequently.Read more
