Stanford University Cost of Living

Stanford publishes a standard undergraduate budget for 2025–26 with item-level numbers.

Cost item (UG standard budget) 2025–26 amount
Tuition $67,731
Housing and food $22,167
Student fees allowance $2,475
Books and supplies allowance $840
Personal expenses allowance $3,300
Total (excluding travel variability) $96,513
One-time fees for new students Orientation fee $525; Document fee $250

Using ₹90.78 per $1 (planning rate):

  • Total UG budget $96,513 ≈ ₹87.6 lakh per year (approx).

Most cost pressure is not tuition alone. The Stanford budget already shows housing/food as a major component, and Bay Area prices make cash-flow planning important (rent deposits, quarter billing, health insurance decisions).

Stanford University Campus

Stanford University’s campus, affectionately known as "The Farm", is one of the largest and most architecturally distinct university campuses in the world. Spanning 8,180 acres in the heart of Silicon Valley, it blends 19th-century Spanish-Colonial heritage with ultra-modern research facilities.

  • Stanford University campus is structured with 630 buildings, 150 companies located in the 700-acre Stanford Research Park, and 140 retail stores in the Stanford Shopping Center.
  • Some of the campus traditions include the Battle of Bay (football game), Cardinal Nights, The Wacky Walk, and Fountain Hopping.
  • There are more than 13,000 bikes, 67 buses, and 41 electric buses in a 23-route system on campus for commuters.
  • Accommodation at Stanford University is varied and offers a range of options for students, from traditional dormitory-style housing to apartments, houses, and co-ops.

The flip side—often echoed by students online—is that Palo Alto/Stanford can feel expensive and “bubble-like,” so students who want a dense city life sometimes prefer Berkeley or NYC/Boston schools.

Stanford University Scholarships 2026

Stanford funding is a mix of need-based aid (especially UG) and competitive fellowships (especially graduate).

Scholarship Who it’s for Typical Value Notes
Knight-Hennessy Scholars Graduate applicants Full/near-full funding (varies) Extremely competitive; leadership-heavy
Stanford need-based (UG) Undergrad Varies by family income Policy-led support; check official calculator/policy pages

Some Stanford funding processes may require an ITIN or SSN at later stages; requirements vary by scholarship type.

Overview

Stanford University School of Engineering had a very good ranking for engineering. Also, compared to other colleges, the admission process was very straightforward and hence easier to complete. My overall experience at Stanford University is best. I like the academics and facilities provided to the students and the International Student Department is very helpful and understanding.

Ques. What does it take a student from an average college in India to get into a good university like Stanford or Harvard for an MS in computer science?

● Top Answer By Abhishek Sinha on 16 Feb 24

Ans. As a recent computer science graduate from KR Manglam, I can tell you that getting into a top university like Stanford or Harvard for an MS is not easy. It takes a combination of strong academics, relevant experience, compelling stories, and a bit of luck to stand out amongst the crowd. Here's what I learned in my journey: GPA:  Aim for a high GPA throughout your bachelor's. While the exact requirement varies, most top universities expect at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and ideally closer to 4.0. My GPA wasn't stellar, but I compensated with strong performance in core CS courses. Standardized Tests:  Crush the GRE! Acing the quantitative section is crucial, and a good verbal score helps too. My average score wasn't phenomenal, but it showed my potential for academic rigor. Research:  This is a big differentiator. Look for research opportunities with professors, participate in coding competitions, or do summer internships at research labs. I managed to snag a research assistantship, which not only boosted my knowledge but also gave me a strong recommendation letter. Projects:  Showcase your passion through personal projects. Build an app, contribute to open-source software, or create something unique. I built a web application related to my research, which helped me demonstrate my technical skills and interests. Internships:  Industry internships provide valuable experience and connections. Look for opportunities that align with your interests and potential thesis areas. I interned at a tech startup, gaining valuable practical experience and industry insights. Statement of Purpose (SOP):  This is your chance to shine! Craft a compelling story that highlights your academic journey, research interests, and aspirations. I poured my heart into my SOP, emphasizing my unique experiences and long-term goals. Letters of Recommendation (LORs):  Seek LORs from professors who know you well and can vouch for your potential. I nurtured relationships with professors throughout my undergrad, leading to strong and personalized recommendations. Extracurricular Activities:  Show well-roundedness! Participate in clubs, hackathons, or social initiatives. I actively participated in the coding club, demonstrating my passion for computer science and teamwork. It's important to remember that every applicant's journey is unique. This is just a glimpse into what helped me, and you may have different strengths and opportunities to highlight. Focus on building a strong profile that reflects your genuine passion for computer science and your potential to thrive in a rigorous academic environment.Read more

Ques. I am an Indian and I want to pursue MS in Computer Science at Stanford. What is required of me to get there?

● Top Answer By Sakshi Nair on 16 Feb 24

Ans. As a fellow Indian dreaming of Stanford's MS in Computer Science program, I can share what I've learned about the requirements: Academics: Strong Bachelor's Degree:  Aim for a four-year bachelor's in Computer Science or a related field with a high GPA (ideally above 3.5). A three-year Indian bachelor's might require a two-year master's first. Standardized Tests:  Score well on the GRE (especially the Quantitative section) and TOEFL/IELTS to demonstrate your English proficiency. Aim for GRE scores above 320 and TOEFL above 100 or IELTS above 7. Experience: Research:  Stand out with research experience! Participate in projects with professors, publish papers, or intern at research labs. Showcase your passion and potential for graduate-level work. Projects and Internships:  Relevant industry internships or personal projects demonstrating your coding skills and problem-solving abilities are valuable additions. Other: Letters of Recommendation:  Secure strong letters from professors familiar with your academic abilities and research potential. Statement of Purpose:  Craft a compelling personal statement highlighting your academic journey, research interests, and specific reasons for choosing Stanford. Extracurriculars:  While not mandatory, demonstrating leadership, involvement, and a well-rounded profile can strengthen your application. Additional Tips: Connect with current students and alumni:  Network with Indian students or alumni at Stanford's CS program to gain insights and guidance. Start early:  Research deadlines, gather materials, and prepare well in advance. Stanford's application deadline is typically in December. Seek mentorship:  Find mentors or advisors who can guide you through the application process and offer feedback on your materials. Remember, admission to Stanford's MS in CS is highly competitive. Focus on building a strong profile that showcases your academic excellence, research potential, and genuine passion for the field. Good luck!Read more

Ques. What are the top programs at Stanford?

● Top Answer By Mayank Singh on 16 Feb 24

Ans. As a current Stanford student, I can tell you that "top programs" can mean different things to different people. It really depends on what you're interested in and what your goals are. Here's a breakdown from a student's perspective: Highly Ranked Programs: Graduate Schools:  Stanford consistently ranks at the top for many of its graduate programs, especially in: Business:  The Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) is legendary, consistently nabbing the #1 spot in many rankings. The MBA program here is intense, but it opens doors to incredible career opportunities. Law:  Stanford Law School is another powerhouse, known for its rigorous academics and Supreme Court clerkships. If you're aiming for a top law firm or judicial career, this is a dream school. Engineering:  Stanford Engineering is world-renowned for its research and innovation. From AI and robotics to sustainable energy, you'll be surrounded by cutting-edge projects and brilliant minds. Medicine:  Stanford Medicine is a leader in medical research and education, with top-notch programs in everything from MD/PhD tracks to specialized residencies. Popular Undergrad Majors: STEM:  If you're a techie, Stanford is a haven. Computer Science, Engineering (especially Electrical, Mechanical, and Management Science), and Human Biology are some of the most popular majors, known for their challenging coursework and strong industry connections. Social Sciences:  Stanford's vibrant humanities scene attracts students passionate about everything from Economics and Political Science to Psychology and Symbolic Systems (think AI and language processing). Interdisciplinary:  Looking for something unique? Stanford excels in interdisciplinary programs like Earth Systems Science, International Studies, and Science, Technology, and Society, allowing you to explore multiple interests. Beyond Rankings: Remember, rankings aren't everything. Consider these factors too: Faculty:  Stanford boasts world-class professors who are not only experts in their fields but also passionate about teaching and mentorship. Research:  If you're driven by research, Stanford offers incredible opportunities to participate in groundbreaking projects alongside leading researchers. Campus life:  Stanford's vibrant campus life offers something for everyone, from athletics and arts to student organizations and community service. The best program for you? It's the one that aligns with your academic interests, career aspirations, and overall fit at Stanford. Talk to current students, research specific programs, and visit campus if possible to get a feel for the vibe. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer, so explore and find your perfect fit!Read more

Ques. As an Indian student, how did you afford to go to Stanford?

● Top Answer By Mahima Tyagi on 16 Feb 24

Ans. As an Indian student, navigating the path to Stanford wasn't just about academics, it was about financial hurdles too. Let me tell you how I managed it.  Stanford's generous need-based financial aid program was my saving grace. My family's income fell within the eligibility criteria, and I received a significant scholarship that covered most of the tuition. This was a huge weight off my shoulders, allowing me to focus on my studies. It requires careful planning and exploring various avenues. Here are some possible paths you can explore while planning to study at Stanford University: Scholarships: Stanford University Financial Aid:  Stanford offers generous financial aid packages, and nearly 50% of students receive some form of assistance. Their need-based aid program considers your family's financial situation and aims to meet 100% of demonstrated need. Merit-based scholarships:  Stanford also offers merit scholarships based on academic excellence and achievements in specific fields. External scholarships:  Explore scholarships offered by Indian government organizations, private trusts, NGOs, and alumni associations. Research options like the Fulbright-Nehru Master's and Doctoral Fellowship or the Inlaks Scholarship. Loans: Federal student loans:  International students are eligible for limited federal loans. Private loans:  These come with higher interest rates, so proceed with caution. Other options: Work-study:  On-campus jobs through the Federal Work-Study program can help offset some costs. Summer internships:  Secure well-paying internships to build experience and earn money.Read more
