Stanford University fees for Indian students are shaped by one Autumn intake and a quarter-based bill. Postgraduate tuition ranges from $66,048 (INR 63.66 Lakhs) for standard graduate routes to $89,187 (INR 85.96 Lakhs) for the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Undergraduate tuition is $67,731 (INR 65.28 Lakhs) for Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) majors. The Master of Science (MS) Computer Science route uses Graduate Engineering tuition of $69,717 (INR 67.19 Lakhs).

Stanford, California has a high cost of living because graduate housing is usually on campus or near Palo Alto. Stanford estimates a single graduate student at $61,142 (INR 58.93 Lakhs) for a 12-month non-tuition budget. Undergraduates should treat university housing and food as the first option because Stanford bills housing and food quarterly.

  • Undergraduate housing and food for 2026/27 is $22,944 (INR 22.11 Lakhs).
  • Cardinal Care health insurance is $8,808 (INR 8.49 Lakhs) for graduate budgeting.
  • The standard graduate application fee is $125 (INR 12,048).

An MS Computer Science student using the 1.5-year average completion pattern should budget $196,288.50 (INR 1.89 Crore) for tuition plus living. A first-year undergraduate budget reaches $97,545 (INR 94.01 Lakhs) before travel and personal visa costs. Currency conversion used: 1 USD = INR 96.38, supplied for 6 October 2026.

Autumn 2027 Intake: Scholarship Deadline Pressure

Intake: Stanford has one Autumn degree intake, with no January or Spring degree entry. Autumn 2027 is realistic because visa work follows admission decisions.

Fee update: The 2026/27 fee year applies until Stanford releases the next official rate. Undergraduate tuition stays frozen at $67,731 (INR 65.28 Lakhs).

When to pay: Most graduate programmes have no tuition deposit. Undergraduate admits pay a $200 (INR 19,276) non-refundable enrollment deposit by 1 May 2027.

Scholarships: Knight-Hennessy Scholars closes on 6 October 2026 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time, which is 1:30 a.m. IST on 7 October 2026.

Check Autumn 2027 deadlines in the Stanford admissions guide.

Stanford University Tuition Fees by Programme

Stanford bills most students by quarter, so the fee structure depends on school and unit load. Full-time graduate engineering students usually use the 11-18 unit quarterly rate.

Stanford Postgraduate Fees: Autumn 2027

Postgraduate tuition starts at $66,048 (INR 63.66 Lakhs) for standard graduate routes. Engineering and MBA routes cost more because Stanford assigns separate tuition groups.

Tuition is charged quarterly. Annual totals below use Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters for the 2026/27 fee year.

MBA at Graduate School of Business (GSB)Two years$89,187 (INR 85.96 Lakhs) per year$178,374 (INR 1.72 Crore)

Full-course tuition uses unchanged current rates and is not a future-fee forecast.

  • Engineering MS courses share the higher Graduate Engineering tuition group.
  • Statistics MS planning changes with pace because Stanford expects six quarters.
  • MBA tuition is billed by the Graduate School of Business, not the engineering table.
  • Graduate applicants using Knight-Hennessy Scholars need both applications on time.

Stanford Undergraduate Fees: Autumn 2027

Undergraduate tuition is the same across majors at $67,731 (INR 65.28 Lakhs). Stanford admits students to the university first, so major choice does not change first-year tuition.

Tuition is annual for Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters.

Full-course tuition uses unchanged current rates and is not a future-fee forecast.

  • The undergraduate fee band is simple because Stanford does not price by major.
  • New undergraduates add a $525 (INR 50,600) orientation fee and $250 (INR 24,095) document fee.
  • Stanford lists health insurance separately because Cardinal Care may be waived only with comparable cover.
  • Regular Decision for Autumn 2027 closes on 5 January 2027.

Note: Stanford’s undergraduate tuition freeze keeps 2026/27 tuition at $67,731 (INR 65.28 Lakhs). A fee revision for Autumn 2027 changes every BS and BA total equally.

Stanford University Fee Trend by Year

Undergraduate tuition rose from $56,169 (INR 54.14 Lakhs) in 2021/22 to $67,731 (INR 65.28 Lakhs) in 2026/27. The 2026/27 freeze reduces one year of increase risk for Autumn 2027 planning.

Cost of Living in Stanford for Indian Students

Stanford estimates $61,142 (INR 58.93 Lakhs) for a single graduate student’s 12-month non-tuition budget. Off-campus living can be 10% to 40% higher, depending on housing choice.

  • Graduate on-campus housing is the cleanest comparison because Stanford publishes a standard budget.
  • Private housing near Palo Alto can exceed Stanford’s budget by 10% to 40%.
  • Undergraduate housing and food are billed quarterly at $22,944 (INR 22.11 Lakhs) yearly.
  • Living outside campus adds commute and lease-risk decisions that the university budget cannot remove.

Note: Off-campus housing at 40% above Stanford’s graduate budget raises 12-month living from $61,142 (INR 58.93 Lakhs) to about $85,599 (INR 82.50 Lakhs). That difference can exceed one Indian education-loan disbursement tranche.

The cost of living in Stanford is most sensitive to rent because the campus sits beside Palo Alto and Menlo Park. University housing should be tested before signing a private lease.

Currency Tip: Autumn 2027 bills begin after admission and visa documentation. Use Flywire or Convera for Stanford payments because the university lists both for international transfers.

  • The MS Computer Science row is the worked example for total-cost calculations.
  • Graduate mandatory fees include Cardinal Care, health fee, document fee and Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) fee.
  • The undergraduate row includes housing, food, books, supplies, personal expenses and student fee allowance.
  • The F-1 student visa is the US student visa. Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-901 is a separate visa charge.
  • The Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee is the F-1 visa application fee.
  • Visa and SEVIS charges are paid outside Stanford, not on the university bill.

At unchanged current rates, MS Computer Science tuition plus 18 months of living totals $196,288.50 (INR 1.89 Crore). A INR 1 Crore loan costs about INR 1.35 Lakhs per month for 10 years at 10.5%.

Key Insight: The controllable saving for Autumn 2027 is housing, not tuition. Avoiding the 40% off-campus premium can protect about $24,457 (INR 23.57 Lakhs) in one graduate year.

Stanford University Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

Stanford has no standard tuition deposit for most graduate admits. Undergraduates confirm enrollment with a $200 (INR 19,276) non-refundable deposit.

Methods of payment include Stanford’s student payment system, Flywire, Convera, paper checks and wire transfer. Flywire supports Indian National Electronic Funds Transfer and Real Time Gross Settlement options.

  1. Accept the Stanford offer and complete the financial forms.
  2. Pay the deposit only if the route requires one.
  3. Receive the Form I-20, the document needed for the F-1 student visa.
  4. Pay the quarterly balance through Stanford’s student payment system.
  5. Keep every receipt for the visa file and bank loan file.

Graduate Autumn bills for 2026/27 list 20 October 2026 as the first and second bill due date. The same billing rhythm is the best timing model until Autumn 2027 dates publish.

Note: For Autumn 2027, keep at least 10 business days for bank wire processing. Stanford warns that manual wire transfers can take that long to post.

Hidden Costs of Studying at Stanford University

Hidden costs begin before tuition because the F-1 visa fee and SEVIS I-901 fee together cost $535 (INR 51,563). These charges are separate from Stanford tuition.

  • F-1 visa Machine Readable Visa fee: $185 (INR 17,830).
  • SEVIS I-901 fee: $350 (INR 33,733).
  • Cardinal Care insurance: $8,808 (INR 8.49 Lakhs) in the graduate budget.
  • Document fee: $250 (INR 24,095) for new degree students.
  • ASSU student activity fee: $69 (INR 6,650) per quarter.
  • Late payment finance charge: 1.00% per month on the past-due balance.

Cash Needed Before Arrival: MS Computer Science

MS Computer Science has no standard tuition deposit, so official pre-arrival cash is mostly visa-linked. Budget at least $535 (INR 51,563) before travel, excluding airfare and personal shopping.

Note: Families often forget Cardinal Care because it is not tuition. For graduate budgeting, $8,808 (INR 8.49 Lakhs) sits in the first-year cost unless Stanford approves a waiver.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students

The highest-value Autumn 2027 saving is securing funding before the Stanford bill starts. Knight-Hennessy can remove tuition and living pressure for selected graduate admits.

  • Submit Knight-Hennessy by 6 October 2026 if eligible for Autumn 2027.
  • Choose Stanford graduate housing before signing a Palo Alto lease.
  • Request undergraduate financial aid in the first application if needed.
  • Use Flywire or Convera instead of unsupported wire routes.
  • Claim Section 80E interest deduction in India after education-loan repayment starts.
  • Use Optional Practical Training (OPT) for 12 months, or 36 months total for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) routes.

Loan size controls affordability more than the headline admit. A INR 50 Lakhs loan costs about INR 65,000 to INR 70,000 per month over 10 years at 10.5%.

Tip for Indian Students: Housing is the practical saving lever after scholarships. Avoiding the 40% off-campus premium can save about $24,457 (INR 23.57 Lakhs) in one year.

Is Stanford University Worth the Cost for Indian Students

Stanford is worth the cost for students who can fund the first year without fragile borrowing. The MS Computer Science first-year budget can reach $141,502 (INR 1.36 Crore), while Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks Stanford #=2 globally for 2027.

The return case is strongest for funded doctoral students, Knight-Hennessy scholars and STEM master’s students entering high-salary technology roles. A INR 1 Crore loan needs about INR 1.35 Lakhs per month over 10 years at 10.5%.

STEM Optional Practical Training can extend work authorisation to 36 months after graduation. Non-STEM Optional Practical Training is 12 months, so MBA and policy students need a tighter repayment plan.

Source: QS World University Rankings 2027 and US OPT rules from cached country facts.

Key Insight: Autumn 2027 is financially strongest when Stanford funding covers tuition or housing stays on the university budget. Without that, the first-year MS budget can cross INR 1.36 Crore before airfare.

Stanford University needs a serious Autumn 2027 budget because one self-funded year can reach INR 94.01 Lakhs for undergraduates and INR 1.36 Crore for MS Computer Science. The 2026/27 undergraduate tuition freeze helps, but housing and Cardinal Care still shape the first-year budget. Knight-Hennessy is the urgent graduate scholarship because the 2027 cohort deadline is 6 October 2026. A Stanford loan decision should be tested against a monthly EMI near INR 1.35 Lakhs for each INR 1 Crore borrowed.

The syllabus was very well planned and we had plenty of exposure to research experiences as well.

Stanford University School of Engineering had a very good ranking for engineering. Also, compared to other colleges, the admission process was very straightforward and hence easier to complete. My overall experience at Stanford University is best. I like the academics and facilities provided to the students and the International Student Department is very helpful and understanding.

The courses here can be very intense and rigorous (since a lot of them are year-long classes condensed into one quarter) but there are a lot of resources (plentiful office hours, tutoring, TAs) to help you! I think the course curriculum, despite its fast pace, is very thorough and definitely trains you to apply what you learned.

Fees

Tuition without financial aid is approximately $50k per year plus about $20k for room and board. Stanford is needed blind, and pretty generous with financial aid though!
