Massachusetts Institute of Technology has held the title of the world's #1 university in the QS World University Rankings for 13 consecutive years as of 2026. Founded in 1861 in Boston and relocated to its 168-acre Cambridge campus along the Charles River in 1916, MIT was built on a single, enduring idea: that science, technology, and hands-on problem-solving could transform the world. Its Latin motto, Mens et Manus — Mind and Hand — captures this philosophy precisely.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

MIT is not simply a technology school. It houses five schools and one college spanning engineering, science, architecture, management, humanities, and social sciences. The institute is accredited by ABET (Engineering), AACSB (MIT Sloan School of Management), and NAAB (Architecture), and is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. With 105 Nobel Laureates, 84 MacArthur Fellows, and 65+ research centers including the MIT Media Lab, CSAIL, and the Koch Institute, MIT's academic depth is unmatched globally.

  • What draws Indian students to MIT is a combination of academic prestige, research opportunity, and financial accessibility.
  • MIT is one of only nine universities in the United States that is both need-blind and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need — for every admitted student, including international applicants.
  • Starting from the 2025–26 academic year, students from families earning under $200,000 annually attend MIT tuition-free.
  • Approximately 261 Indian students are currently enrolled across all programs, making India one of the top five source countries for international students at MIT.

MIT's QS subject rankings for 2026 place it at #1 in Engineering & Technology, Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics — the exact disciplines most sought after by Indian students. The average starting salary for MIT graduates entering industry stands at $145,820 (approximately ₹1.34 Crore), according to MIT's own Graduating Student Survey. For Indian students weighing the cost of an MIT education against long-term career outcomes, the return on investment is among the strongest of any university in the world.

  • For graduate applicants, a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 (90%+) is expected, with GRE scores of 320+ for most programmes and 330+ for PhD programmes.
  • The MBA requires a GMAT of 730+ or GRE of 311+.
  • English language proficiency is mandatory for Indian students: TOEFL iBT minimum 100 (recommended), IELTS Academic minimum 7.0, or Duolingo 135.
  • Beyond scores, MIT places significant weight on research experience, intellectual curiosity, and demonstrated impact outside the classroom.

Ques: Do MIT graduates get jobs in India after returning?

Ans: MIT graduates who return to India command some of the highest salaries in the Indian job market.

  • The average starting salary for an MIT graduate entering industry globally is $145,820 (₹1.34 Crore).
  • In the Indian context, returning MIT graduates in technology roles typically command ₹50–₹1.20 Crore per year at senior levels, while those in consulting or finance earn ₹40–₹80 Lakhs at entry level.
  • Many Indian MIT alumni also leverage their degree to launch startups — MIT's entrepreneurship ecosystem, including the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, provides resources that extend well beyond graduation.

For students who wish to work in the USA first, the 3-year STEM OPT extension available for most MIT programmes provides a structured pathway to gain US work experience before returning to India or transitioning to an H-1B visa.

Ques. Is IIT, Kharagpur the same as MIT or Harvard?

● Top Answer By Aditi Roy on 27 Sept 23

Ans. None of the IITs now compete with international institutions. IIT Kharagpur is a great option only if your future plans include moving to India. IITs are not as valuable as premier institutions in the US, UK, France, and Switzerland globally. There are various reasons for Harvard to stay in the upper hand that Indian institutions, they are as follows: Academic excellence: IIT Kharagpur is not ranked as one of the top engineering institutions in the world in terms of reputation or ranking. However, when looking at all elite colleges worldwide, Harvard University came in second place, which proves its academic excellence, faculty base as well and infrastructural abilities. World-Class Faculty: Some of the top business professors in the world teach at these institutions. Harvard professors are not only leaders in their disciplines but also frequently carry out ground-breaking research that advances our understanding of business. Scholarship and financial aid: Scholarships and financial assistance are available for deserving students, despite the fact that Harvard's tuition is more than that of IIT Kharagpur. Even the costs for lodging are included. Strong Alumni Base: Harvard University has an extensive and powerful global alumni network. This network might offer beneficial contacts and chances for professional success. Rahul Bajaj, CEO of Bajaj Auto, and Rajat Gupta, a former managing director of McKinsey & Company, are notable Indian graduates of Harvard Business School. Access to Silicon Valley (Stanford) or Boston (Harvard): Stanford is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, while Harvard is close to the flourishing economic center of Boston. Both universities provide access to Silicon Valley or Boston. It is simpler to investigate starting your own business, participate in internships, and network because of this proximity to existing businesses, venture capital firms, and tech startups. Placement statistics: The average package offered by Harvard Business School is 150,000 USD per year, according to placement statistics of 2022. So, in conclusion, selecting Harvard over IIT Kharagpur offers global recognition, a diverse learning environment, and access to a broad range of fields. However, financial costs and cultural adjustments are important factors to consider. Ultimately, the decision hinges on individual goals and priorities, weighing Harvard's prestige against personal circumstances.Read more

work study options in massachusetts institute of technology

Most of the students enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology work while studying, irrespective of their financial needs. On-campus employment at MIT is usually found in labs, department centers, communities as well as offices. Students enrolled in any of the MIT programs can apply and get the on-campus jobs. It is highly encouraged that a student finds a job role that aligns with their interests and future aspirations.

The university has its own job board, which is offered free of charge to students taking admission at MIT USA. Student finance services, which look after the job board, do not run a verification or screening on the employers or students. It is, hence, suggested that both employers and work-study aspirants to request reference information from each other.

International students are not eligible for the federal work-study programs, resulting in a lack of opportunities for off-campus work study jobs.

    On-campus Work-Study at MIT

    • International students at MIT can work for 20 hours per week during the term and 40 hours per week during semester break.
    • Minimum wages paid is $15/hour (?1,278) which is $1700 (?1.44 lakhs) per semester.

Type of Work-Study opportunities at MIT

    • Research Jobs: Find these through Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). You can be either paid or given academic credit for the research work you contribute to the program.
    • Research and Teaching Assistantship: Available for graduate students where research assistants are a part of the group involved in a research project and teaching assistants offer help to a graduate faculty member.
    • Public Service Jobs: Priscilla King Gray Public Center offers a variety of job opportunities to MIT students for public services projects in national, local, and global communities.
    • Community Service Work-Study Program: Working with non-profit public or community-based agency can earn MIT students (both UG and PG) to be paid as per federal regulation.

Every student working while studying is required to fill out the federal form before or on the first day of their work. I-20 form, section 1 must be completed via human resources.

It can be concluded that international students at MIT can apply for the on-campus work study program, RAs, and TAs and are allowed to work for 20-40 hours per week depending on whether the term is ongoing or MIT has vacations.
