Massachusetts Institute of Technology has held the title of the world's #1 university in the QS World University Rankings for 13 consecutive years as of 2026. Founded in 1861 in Boston and relocated to its 168-acre Cambridge campus along the Charles River in 1916, MIT was built on a single, enduring idea: that science, technology, and hands-on problem-solving could transform the world. Its Latin motto, Mens et Manus — Mind and Hand — captures this philosophy precisely.

MIT is not simply a technology school. It houses five schools and one college spanning engineering, science, architecture, management, humanities, and social sciences. The institute is accredited by ABET (Engineering), AACSB (MIT Sloan School of Management), and NAAB (Architecture), and is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. With 105 Nobel Laureates, 84 MacArthur Fellows, and 65+ research centers including the MIT Media Lab, CSAIL, and the Koch Institute, MIT's academic depth is unmatched globally.
- What draws Indian students to MIT is a combination of academic prestige, research opportunity, and financial accessibility.
- MIT is one of only nine universities in the United States that is both need-blind and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need — for every admitted student, including international applicants.
- Starting from the 2025–26 academic year, students from families earning under $200,000 annually attend MIT tuition-free.
- Approximately 261 Indian students are currently enrolled across all programs, making India one of the top five source countries for international students at MIT.
MIT's QS subject rankings for 2026 place it at #1 in Engineering & Technology, Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics — the exact disciplines most sought after by Indian students. The average starting salary for MIT graduates entering industry stands at $145,820 (approximately ₹1.34 Crore), according to MIT's own Graduating Student Survey. For Indian students weighing the cost of an MIT education against long-term career outcomes, the return on investment is among the strongest of any university in the world.

work study options in massachusetts institute of technology
Most of the students enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology work while studying, irrespective of their financial needs. On-campus employment at MIT is usually found in labs, department centers, communities as well as offices. Students enrolled in any of the MIT programs can apply and get the on-campus jobs. It is highly encouraged that a student finds a job role that aligns with their interests and future aspirations.
The university has its own job board, which is offered free of charge to students taking admission at MIT USA. Student finance services, which look after the job board, do not run a verification or screening on the employers or students. It is, hence, suggested that both employers and work-study aspirants to request reference information from each other.
International students are not eligible for the federal work-study programs, resulting in a lack of opportunities for off-campus work study jobs.
