NIT Agartala PhD applications are expected to commence soon. Applications for the January-June 2024 academic session are closed. Candidates can only apply for Ph.D. programs online. Students must meet one of the following requirements to be admitted to engineering departments' Ph.D. programs. Either the candidate should have a minimum CGPA of 6.5 or comparable 60% marks required for a master's degree in engineering technology, or its equivalent, in a relevant field. Or, a bachelor's degree in engineering or technology with 85% equivalent marks or a CGPA of at least 9.0 and an outstanding academic record. The applicant's Gate score needs to be valid. The shortlisted candidates shall be required to appear for a written test and interview.

NIT Agartala PhD Eligibility Criteria
Engineering Departments
Candidates seeking admission to Ph.D programs in Engineering Departments must satisfy any of the following eligibility criteria:
- Master's Degree in Engineering/ Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 point grading system or equivalent 650/o of marks.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/ Technology from a centrally funded Technical Institute with an excellent academic record and with a CGPA of at least 9.0 out of 10 point grading system or equivalent 90% of marks. Candidates must have a valid GATE score tenable for the year of admission.
- Master's Degree in a relevant science discipline with a good academic record and of exceptional merit are eligible for relevant engineering discipline with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 point grading system or more or at least 65% marks. Preference will be given to GATE-qualified candidates. However, for availing scholarship of MHRD (now MoE), a GATE score is mandatory.
Categories of Scholars under Section- A
- Full-time with scholarship: Candidates under this category will be eligible for fellowship as per MHRD (now MoE)/ Institute norms. GATE score is a mandatory criterion for this category of scholars for making themselves eligible for receiving scholarships during the tenure of a Ph.D. Fellowship will be awarded to the scholars who are admitted under this category subject to the availability as stipulated by MHRD (now MoE). The award and/ or renewal of the fellowship will be as per the guidelines issued by MoE, from time to time.
- Full-time self-financed scholars: Candidates selected for admission under this category will not be entitled to any scholarship. GATE score is not a mandatory criterion for this category. However, eligibility norms are essential as per section AID of this notification. *** Conversion of CGPA to percentage and vice-versa will not be allowed.
Science Department
Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in the Science Department must satisfy any of the following eligibility criteria:
- Master's degree in Sciences with a good academic record and with a minimum of 65% of marks (or equivalent or 6.5 CGPA in a 10-point grading system) or 60% of marks (6.0 CGPA out of 10-point grading system) with a GATE score or UGC/CSIR-NET/NBHM tenable for the year of admission. Preference will be given to GATE/NET-qualified candidates.
- Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent is eligible with a good academic record with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 point grading system or equivalent or 65% of marks. Preference will be given to GATE-qualified candidates.
- B.Tech/ B.E degree from a centrally funded technical institute in India with a minimum CGPA of 9.0 on a 10.0 point scale or the equivalent of 90Yo of marks with a valid GATE score.
- Candidates admitted to science departments with eligibility criteria mentioned in B (I to III) are eligible for an Institute scholarship under Full-time with scholarship category based on availability and decisions of competent authority from time to time. The award and/ or renewal of the fellowship will be as per the guidelines issued from time to time.
Department of Management, Humanities & Social Sciences
Humanities & Social Sciences
Scholars for admission to the Ph.D. program in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) must have a master's degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 55%o marks or equivalent or 6.5 CGPA in a 10-point grading system or 60%o or 6.0 CGPA in a 10 point scale with a UGC/CSIR-NETAIBHM tenable for the year of admission. The relevant discipline of research will include English; Economics; Commerce; Finance; Foreign Trade; Business Management; Geography; and Rural Management &. Development; Sociology and others as per the requirement of the Department, which will be notified from time to time. Preference will be given to NET-qualified candidates.
Management
MBA/P.G. Diploma in Management of 2-year duration with 65% of marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale. Preference will be given to GATE / NET-qualified candidates. Candidates admitted to MHSS Department for the Ph.D. program under the Full-Time with scholarship category will be eligible for and decisions of competent authority from the fellowship will be as per the guidelines for the Ph.D. program under Full-time with Institute scholarship, based on availability from time to time. The award and/ or renewal of issued from time to time.
Institute Employees or Research Scholars
For Research Scholars of this category, the minimum educational qualifications are the same as prescribed in A to D above for admission to the Ph.D. program in the respective categories. However, a GATE score or CSIR/ UGC JRF or Lectureship/ NBHM/ JMET/CATI AIMA or equivalent qualification as applicable for regular full-time scholars may not be required in these cases.
NIT Agartala Selection Criteria
On submission of the online application, the candidates fulfilling eligibility conditions as per sections A to D will be provisionally short-listed by the respective department. The provisionally short-listed candidates will be required to appear for the written test to be conducted by the Institute. The candidates qualifying for the written test will appear for an interview. Provisional selection will be made based on the academic performance of the candidates, publication, and availability of seats.
NIT Agartala PhD Admission Guidelines
The selection shall be done based on the performance of the candidates in the written test and interview and the availability of seats.
How to Apply?
Candidates must follow the following steps to apply for PhD at the National Institute of Technology, Agartala:
- Candidates must visit the official website and apply online at https://mis.nita.ac.in/PHD.
- Since the portal is compatible with Mozilla Firefox, candidates are advised to use the Mozilla Firefox browser only.
- The candidate is supposed to register separately for each program he wants to apply to. A separate application fee must be paid for each registration.
- After registration, the candidate shall be sent an Application ID with a Password through the email ID provided by him/her.
- Applicants must log in to the Admission Portal for form filling using the login credentials.
- Next, the application fees must be paid by the online payment portal. After completion and submission of the online form, the filled-in form shall be generated in PDF format.
- On the day of the written test and interview, the shortlisted candidates must bring a printed copy of the online filled-in form along with the original and photocopies of the necessary documents.

- Proof of date of birth (Mandatory).
- Photo ID proof, as per guidelines of GoI (Mandatory).
- Class 1Oth marksheet (Mandatory).
- Class 12th marksheet (Mandatory).
- Mark sheet(s) of all semesters of Bachelor's degree(Mandatory).
- Mark sheets of all semesters of Master's Degree(Mandatory).
- Pass Certificate of Master's Degree(Mandatory).
- GATE/ NET etc. score card (if and whichever applicable). Fellowship will not be considered if the required scorecard is not uploaded under the applicable categories mentioned above.
- Migration Certificate issued by the Institution last attended(Mandatory).
- Conduct/ Character Certificate issued by the Institution last attended(Mandatory).
- Recent color photograph as per specifications (strictly formal photograph, preferably white/sky blue background) {Mandatory).
- Experience certificate (if any).
- Passport (for foreign scholar).
- SC/S T/PwD/OBC-NCL/EWS certificate. The OBC-NCL/ EWS certificate must be issued by the Competent Authority. Admission under the PwD category will be based on the recommendation of the Medical Board of NIT Agartala.

NIT Agartala PhD Financial Assistance
NIT Agartala offers financial assistance to the students of the Ph.D. program in Engineering, Science, Management, Humanities & Social Sciences Departments. Students admitted to the Ph.D. program will be considered for assistantship according to the following norms:
- Full-time Scholars with a post-graduate qualification in Engineering/technology at the time of admission are eligible for the award of an MHRD scholarship as per MHRD and Institute guidelines.
- Full-time Scholars with a post-graduate qualification in Science/ Humanities and with a valid GATE/NET score at the time of admission are eligible for the award of MHRD scholarship as per MHRD and Institute guidelines.
- Full-time Scholars with Bachelor's degrees in Engineering/Technology must have a valid GATE score at the time of admission for the award of MHRD scholarship as per MHRD and Institute guidelines.
- Full-time Scholars with a postgraduate degree in Science/ Humanities and without GATE/NET scores at the time of admission are eligible for the award of Institute Scholarship as per Institute norms/ guidelines. Such scholars are referred to as Institute Scholars.
- For an Institute Scholarship the candidate has to qualify for a Test/Examination organized by the concerned Department followed by a recommendation of the Interview board and subsequent approval of the authority.
- Students with fellowship tenable at the time of admission from CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM or any other organization recognized by the Institute will also be permitted.
- Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or any other funding agencies will be required to perform academic duties assigned to them by the departments as per rules in force from time to time.
- Assistantship will initially be for one year and it can be extended by one year at a time, to a maximum of total
- 4 years for scholars with a postgraduate qualification in Engineering/ Technology.
- 5 years for scholars with postgraduate qualifications in Science/Humanities with a valid NET/ GATE ' score.
- 5 years for scholars with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/ Technology with a valid NET/ GATE score.
- 4 years for Institute Scholars (Scholars with a postgraduate qualification in Science/ Humanities and Assistantship rate and without a valid NET/ GATE score. Assistantship rate and tenure are subject to change as per MTIRD/ Institute guidelines applicable from time to time.
- Extension of the scholarship will be subject to the recommendation of the concerned DC and HOD based on the satisfactory performance of the scholar in research and in the assigned Departmental duties. Progress will be evaluated by the DC on the basis written report and presentation.
- No financial assistance from the Institute will be available to part-time students. Project staff will get funding from the project as per the rules but will not get any additional assistance from the institute.
- All the Research Scholars have to pay the admission fee one time during admission in the respective program and also the registration fees at the beginning of each semester till the submission of the thesis within the stipulated dates.
