Life at NIT JAMSHEDPUR

Student view on course curriculum and subjects

The curriculum is really good like in the first year they generally revise all the 12th and 11 standard subjects with some high level questions and high level topics. In the first year there are two cycles of subject that we used to learn ,the first one is chemistry cycle and the second one is physics cycle. There also many subjects like material science environment studies which literally deal s other areas apart from engineering. Even we study biology also in the first year. I think the profession should become familiar with the technology for teaching, like this should you smart boards instead only green Board

Internship opportunity provided by the college

The company generally offer in internships in 3rd year where students are filtered on the basis of their CGPA and their skills. Generally the students having good CGPA get really good internship and if a student do a very good work in their internship then they get pre placement offer also famously called as PPO. Generally means that the company have already hired him before his final exams of btech. And if you are targetting for IT sector then you really have to make good projects and communication skills for elaborating anything they want. Communication skills also matters a lot.

Top company recruiting from the campus and highest package

After about 6th semester the students are eligible for placements in my college and the average package is really good of my college it is about 12 lakhs for all branches. The highest package of computer science was 83 lakhs per annum, and in 2023 the average packing job CSE was 27 lakh per annum but in 2024 due to recession it went down to 20 lacs per annum. Apart from that many companies like Google Amazon Tata TCS Infosys Wipro cognizant and many IT sector companies visit in our company. Apart from that the core branches also have good placement records. About 95% students get placed in civil engineering department and 100% student gets placed in metallurgy department 96% student gets placed in production engineering department and 94% student gets placed in electronics department and about 97% student gets in computer science department also there is a new department called ECM. Main students also qualify gate exam from my college.

Yearly fees structure in the college

The total fees of btech is 215000 rupees per year and it includes these Tution fees which is 125000 per year the institute fees which is 24000 rupees per year hostel fees is 30000 rupees per year and the mess charges are 36000 rupees per year And For SC/ST students the tuition fees is zero.

Annual fest and various activity in the campus

The annual technical fest is ojass and the annual cultural fest is CULFEST were many new singers and actors came for celebrating with us. There is also a very grand Annual sports fest named URJA . In 2024 the winner was CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. FROM past many years civil engineering department have dominated the annual sports fest. There is a very huge library in my college, where where you can borrow where you can borrow 5 books from one ID card. And we can issue it for 15 days. We get Wi-Fi connections in our college but it does not go well as we expect the network is very slow here

Hostel facilities provide by the college

The hostel provides one small room hot two students where we get two cupboards two beds and one study table. Also we get Wi-Fi and lan ports. Many of the lan ports are broken. We have a common washroom in each block. The meal is not that good as of my expectation. The night there is also cafeteria outside or hostel or we can say it as night canteen.

Skilled and helpful faculty in the college and examination

The faculties are really good they teach very well they are very helpful and they are very qualified Every professor had done their PhD from a very reputed institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi etc We have two exams in a semester like the first exam is mid semester exam and the second exam is and semester exam. The total marks of mid sem exam is 30 marks on each subject and in the endsem exams the total marks is 50 marks for each subject. Apart from that we have internals which includes Viva and practical exams. All the faculties are really good so I love every faculty of my department.

Admission process and eligibilty criteria

I also got Birla institute of technology Mishra college Ranchi, but because of very high fees I choosed National institute of technology Jamshedpur. Apart from that nit jamshedpur have a good placement record as compared to other colleges that I was getting and it has a little bit of low fees as compared to other private colleges. I wanted to go on IIT Delhi but I what rejected in JEE advanced exam. Apart from this I was selected for any other colleges. And for taking admission in my college a student have to qualify JEE mains exam with good percentile. Then they have to fill jossa counselling for getting admission into colleges where you have to choose NIT Jamshedpur as first preference or an any other college that you want as first preference. Also you have to secure 75% in 12th board of CBSE board students. Otherwise even if you get good percentile in JEE exam still you won't be able to join any NIT college of India. The minimum percentile for getting here is about 97.5 percentile for general student and 96% tile for OBC students

Nightlife and nearby places

The condition of gym is not that good it have a very small area of gym but all the essential equipments are present over there. The campus area is about 350 acres. It has a lush green campus. A campus is open campus so there is no fencing over the 350 acres area. In timing of hostel is 10:30 p.m. for 1st year students. The famous hangout places in my college is Nescafe area and the TSG area. A people relaxes after the whole day class and hustle. Apart from that the girls in timing is 9:30 p.m. there is also Sudha place where we use to eat petties for snacks. Around the campus area we get the market where we every essential thing is present

I got rejected from NIT prayagraj due to little less rank . The admission process of my colleges you have to qualify JEE mains with around 95 percentile to get any branch as a general student then you have to go for Josaa counselling in which you will be a lot at the seat . You have to score at least 75% in class 12th board to get admission .

NIT Jamshedpur: 23 Answered Questions

Is there any biasness between students of IIIT Ranchi and NIT Jamshedpur?

Aditi Roylives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Honestly, I don’t know if there is any bias between the students of IIIT Ranchi and NIT Jamshedpur. However, I can point out some common differences between these institutes that might help you get the answer yourself

  • Infrastructure: NIT Jamshedpur has very poor infrastructure and the campus has 1960s buildings with poorly equipped classrooms. IIIT Ranchi on the other hand has air-conditioning and hygienic learning conditions.
  • Curriculum: IIIT Ranchi has a CS-tailored curriculum whereas NIT has diverse branches so the curriculum is quite different.
  • Campus life: Both the institutes have an active campus life with NIT Jamshedpur having a slight advantage in terms of the students-run clubs like RAYS, DAKSH, REVANTA, DRIFT, etc .
  • Crowd: IIIT Ranchi has no Home State Quota so the crowd is much more diverse and talented than NIT Jamshedpur.
  • Hostel: The hostel and mess facilities of both institutes are similar.

Here is a detailed comparison of these institutes

Is NIT Jamshedpur for civil engineering good in terms of placements and packages? What is the average package for a civil engineer?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

The answer to this question depends on your interpretation of a good placement.

If you are looking for a decent core/ non core job, NIT Jamshedpur Civil won’t disappoint you. However, if you are looking for very high packages from top brands, you’ll be disappointed. In fact, any core branch (civil, mechanical, electrical, production, metallurgy etc.), won’t fetch you high packages. This can happen only if you have graduated from an old IIT, BITS Pilani, or any other top Engineering college.

For 2023, CE saw 97.29% placements and an average CTC of INR 9.57 LPA.

One can’t assess placement figures correctly through the average package. High salary offers for a handful of students inflate the entire figure. Try to research the future prospects of Civil, and explore your interests.

But overall, the placements are quite good at the Civil department of NIT Jamshedpur. You can expect plenty of offers and a decent salary package.

Which hostel is alloted to freshers at NIT Jamshedpur and how many people are allowed per room?

Saurabh SethB.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2020)

The recently constructed Mega Hostels are home to all freshers of NIT Jamshedpur. These hostels are the best as they have modern facilities, unlike the old hostels. The building is 6 stories with around 800 rooms, and every student gets a single occupancy room.

A typical room in NIT Jamshedpur Mega hostel has a balcony, two cupboards, a bed, a study table, a chair, a tube light, a bracket lamp, and a ceiling fan.

NIT Silchar is similar to all the other NITs like MANIT, NITJ, NITD still its cutoff/ranking is low, what are the probable reasons?

Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

If you look at all the criteria MHRD takes into consideration while ranking institutes, NIT Silchar is at par with most NITs but in terms of research, and infrastructure. The only parameter in which NIT Silchar was behind NIT Warangal was reputation and the difference was drastic. This affected the overall ranking of the institute in turn lowering the NT Silchar cutoffs.

I think the major reason behind its poor reputation is its remote location and the rumors related to it. It's falsely rumored to be in a Naxalite region and the exposure is believed to be minimal. The institute has a bad reputation, particularly in North India.

I have friends from several NITs and I have safely concluded that NIT Silchar is better than many but it's difficult to convince people of the same and the institute has a bad reputation.

To fix this problem, we need our alumni to be more active in portraying the right image of the institute. Additionally, the institute should hold more inter-college events and strive to build a reputation.

How is the campus and surroundings of NIT Jamshedpur?

Gargi GuptaStudied at NIT Jamshedpur

If you are expecting a magnificent campus that will leave you in awe with its beauty and infrastructure then you can lower your expectations because NIT Jamshedpur is nothing like that. You might even get disappointed with the campus on your very first day. However, the administration is slowly working to bring about small changes in the campus and infrastructure.

  • The hostel facilities are the best in the country especially since the new Mega Hostels offering single occupancy rooms have come into function. The hostels are well-maintained and are cleaned regularly to ensure hygienic conditions. The mess food is also better than many others.
  • Although the campus is remotely located, the basic needs and amenities of the students are catered to by nearby stores like ‘NIT Store’ or ‘Shyam Da Store’.
  • The campus is surrounded by lush greenery. The roads leading to the campus are well-constructed making the commute an easier process.

Overall, the campus and surroundings of NIT Jamshedpur are great and once you start studying here you will grow emotionally attached to the campus such that its minor flaws won’t even matter.

What is it like taking ECE in NIT Jamshedpur?

Sayantani Barman
Saurabh SethB.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2020)

As an ECE student, you will be taught C and Data structures as a part of the ECE curriculum and not an extra subject. One needs to have good programming skills to excel in this branch. A skilled ECE engineer is someone who has a strong grasp of concepts as well as programming skills. He can easily get a job in core companies and need not opt for software-based jobs.

Electronics

  • Writing code in Embedded C or some other assembly language for processors, controllers, and high-end boards.

  • In the VLSI domain, you have to write code in Verilog or VHDL to design a circuit/ chips.
  • In communication, MATLAB - a widely used computing tool - C like a simple programming language used in it.

Networks

  • This requires a deep understanding of concepts and having to work with software and NW-related languages.

Overall, ECE students require good programming skills to apply/ test/ design their core concepts in the real world. Due to some similarities in the curriculum, many software companies allow ECE, and EEE students to sit with CS and IT for placements.

Can I take admission in BIT Mesra and NIT Jamshedpur after qualifying Jharkhand combined examination?

Sapna Malik

NIT Jamshedpur and BIT Mesra intake students through JEE Mains (which is conducted by CSAB). JEE Mains allows admission to NITs, BIT Mesra, and various other engineering colleges.

JCECE allows admission to state colleges of Jharkhand. BIT Sindri is the best college to get into by qualifying JCECE. If you are interested in branches like Mining and Metallurgy, BIT Sindri is a good choice.

If you perform well in JEE Mains, you may qualify for the top NITs like Warangal, Trichy, etc.

What are the drawbacks of NIT Jamshedpur?

Namrata Das
Saurabh SethB.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2020)

Here are a few drawbacks of NIT Jamshedpur that the ex-students talk about

  • Infrastructure: The reason NIT Jamshedpur is so poorly ranked is because of its poor infrastructure. However, the infrastructure is improving constantly and this can be reflected in the newly constructed Mega Hostels that provide single rooms to students. Other new facilities are being implemented.
  • Location: Jamshedpur faces major location disadvantages due to the lack of air connectivity. Most recruiters refrain from visiting the campus because of these transport issues. However, an inactive airport here Sonari is rumored to start operating again. again.
  • Attendance Policy: Although the institute has a policy of 75% attendance, students do not follow it and skip classes frequently. However, the new director has implemented strictness in this matter and now even last year students attend classes regularly.

So it can be concluded that most drawbacks of NIT Jamshedpur are being addressed and none of them hamper the academics to the point the institute's credibility needs to be questioned.
