AI-Generated Summary based on 253 Reviews

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay offers a B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering primarily through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. Students aspiring to join must first qualify the JEE Main, conducted by NTA, which is held twice a year—in January and in April. Eligible candidates need to secure at least 75% in their 12th standard (65% for SC/ST) or rank in the top 20 percentile of their respective board exams.

Scoring well in JEE Main allows candidates to advance to the JEE Advanced, organized by IITs, usually occurring in May or June. JEE Advanced is considered one of India's toughest exams, focusing on deep conceptual understanding. Cutoffs for the Mechanical Engineering program typically range from JEE Advanced ranks between 493 and 1736 for general category students, though these may vary annually. Counselling for seat allocation is conducted online via the JoSAA platform.

Reservation policies are in place for categories such as OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwDs, and female students. Reserved category students benefit from lower cutoff ranks and reduced fees. For the application process, candidates need to monitor official websites for JEE Main and JEE Advanced for application availability, deadlines, and fees, which can vary each year. Admission procedures are efficiently managed online, ensuring a systematic process from application to seat allocation.

IIT Bombay: 5 Answered Questions

What can be done to crack the JEE (Advanced) and get into IIT-Bombay?

Aparna Das
Sumit BoseIIT Bombay (2019)

Don’t be fixed upon a certain agenda and keep your options open. If you will restrict yourself in such a way you might limit your options as well as the capacity to give your best.

Instead, I suggest that you try to analyze why exactly you want to pursue Engineering. Is it because of the sheep mentality or do you really want to build things?

Once you are sure, then figure out how exactly you will be achieving this goal. Set achievable goals for yourself and work sincerely on fulfilling them. Reward yourself for very little achievement on the way. This will gradually increase your confidence and pave the way to achieve much more.

However, a very important thing is to dream but not demand. That is you should be passionate about a certain thing but not fixated on it too much to the extent that if you fail to achieve it, you lose much more. So you can desire to pursue BTech in CSE at IIT Bombay but leave room for other options as well.

Don’t stress yourself out too much and just concentrate on the present, your future will be visible sooner or later.

Procedure for applying to M.Tech Biomedical Engineering After MBBS

Once your application is selected, you will be called in for the Written Test and Interview. The written test is conducted in the morning and results will be declared in the afternoon. Your interview will be conducted only if you qualify for the written test.

For MBBS students, the written test is of Mathematics only The syllabus for this test is in accordance with that of 12th class CBSE.

What should be my strategy for getting admission in IIT Bombay for an MTech in the CSE branch?

Khushboo Shafi
Mansi BasuStudied MBA at IIM B

One of my friends made it into IISc with a rank of 10. I enquired about the strategy he adopted to score such high marks. He told me about his 3 milestone theories and the things he achieved on the way. The final outcome is 75 marks in GATE which will help you get CSE in IIT Bombay.

1st Milestone: The first and foremost goal you should set is to achieve 25 marks in GATE. This can be done by working on some basic mathematics, aptitude, and core subjects. This can be done from

the college itself. Try to secure 25 marks in the final year on the first attempt and once you are done move to the second milestone.

2nd milestone: You have to achieve another 25 marks to make it 50. I suggest not taking a gap to prepare for this. This can be done over the 2 years after your graduation during which you can take up an IT job and increase your work experience. This will be useful during placements at IIT Bombay.

To achieve this milestone, read some more core mathematics, and cover 3–4 core subjects previous 25 marks revision. If you are able to secure 50 marks over the next couple of attempts, you don’t have to worry much as you can get admission in any IIT.

3rd milestone: If you want those additional 25 marks take help from some professionals and seniors.

My friend got a 10 rank after working on this strategy and he is working at Microsoft today.

I will complete my MSc in applied geology next year from IIT Kharagpur. What should I do to opt for a PhD program at IIT Bombay/IIT Kharagpur?

Rishav Gangopadhyay
Advait JoshiLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The first step in the journey of getting a Ph.D. degree is giving either of these exams; GATE, NET, CSIR, or UGC. Next, you have to decide on a particular field in which you will be conducting your research. After this, you have to look for a faculty advisor that has experience in the kind of research work you are looking for. His teaching style should necessarily align with your learning style. Conduct extensive research on the topic you will be working on.

IIT Bombay: Here, you are required to do some coursework on the topic you have chosen. Choose the course that will give you more opportunities than others. Most Ph.D. students take some courses only to make up the required credits. This is not right as you will miss the opportunity to learn so much from every department. The most preferred courses are CS and Modelling at IIT Bombay.

One can even upgrade their skills in Mathematics and Statistics. Other courses that might help you in research work are fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, inorganic chemistry, solid-state physics, and thermodynamics.

Basically, you should choose your coursework not only for credits but to get knowledge of the research work you will be doing. Seek help from your advisor on the same.
