JMI BA Japanese FAQs
Ques. Is BA (Hons.) Japanese Studies a new programme at JMI? What is the quality of faculty?
Ans. Yes, BA (Hons.) Japanese Studies was newly introduced at JMI in the 2025-26 academic session. The programme is offered by the Department of Foreign Languages, which has experienced faculty in multiple Asian and European languages. The department has a strong track record with Korean and other language programmes. Being a new programme, students will be among the first batches, which can be both an opportunity and a consideration.
Ques. Is prior knowledge of Japanese required to apply for BA (Hons.) Japanese Studies at JMI?
Ans. No, prior knowledge of Japanese is not required. The programme is designed to take students from beginner level (learning Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji) to advanced proficiency over 4 years. The CUET General Aptitude Test does not test Japanese language knowledge.
Ques. What are the career prospects after BA (Hons.) Japanese Studies from JMI?
Ans. Graduates can work as Japanese language translators/interpreters for Japanese MNCs (Toyota, Honda, Sony, Panasonic, Suzuki, Maruti Suzuki), join the Indian Foreign Service (Japanese language officer), work in Japanese tourism and hospitality, pursue content creation related to Japanese culture (anime, manga, J-pop), work with Japanese media companies, or teach Japanese at schools and language institutes. Many graduates also apply for the MEXT Scholarship to study in Japan.
Ques. What is JLPT and how does it help BA Japanese graduates?
Ans. JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is an internationally recognised certification for Japanese language proficiency, offered at 5 levels (N5 to N1). Having JLPT N2 or N1 certification significantly enhances employability with Japanese companies and eligibility for study/work in Japan. Students are strongly encouraged to appear for JLPT alongside their degree. The Japan Foundation conducts JLPT in India twice a year.
Ques. What is the seat intake and how competitive is admission to BA Japanese at JMI?
Ans. The total seat intake is 40 seats. Admission is through CUET UG scores (General Aptitude Test). As a newly introduced programme, competition may be moderate in the initial years. However, given the growing interest in Japanese language and culture in India (driven by anime, manga, and Japanese MNCs), demand is expected to increase.
Ques. Can BA Japanese graduates from JMI apply for the MEXT Scholarship to study in Japan?
Ans. Yes, the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship offered by the Japanese Government is available for Indian students to pursue undergraduate or research programmes in Japan. Graduates with a BA in Japanese Studies and JLPT N2 or above certification are well-positioned to apply. The Embassy of Japan in India announces MEXT Scholarship applications annually, typically in April-May.
