- The college campus is unparalleled to any other institute in India. The campus is huge and is very beautiful.
- Pollution free campus: 90% vehicles are electric taxis and bicycles(1000s of them) which cause no pollution.
- Electric taxis(Toto) are affordable, they charge 20 rupees per passenger(if 2 or more than two passengers) or else 40 rupees for 1 passanger to get you to anywhere on campus, a bus runs on working days which very few people use
Dislikes
- No department change also means students don't have the opportunity to get to a more preferred course by working hard for first few semesters.
- First year courses are not in depth and are more of formality for students who already have good grasp over concepts.
- Campus is huge to travelling takes a lot of time, and will consume money if you don't use bicycles or prefer to walk.
Course Curriculum Overview
The reason I chose AI in iit kgp compared to other courses and AI in other IITs is the focus of basics of AI and depth to which it will be dealt here compared to other iits where AI department is diluted with courses of data science( which too is good) but it stops you from going to deep depths which would certainly help in future as it is a sort of distraction to the "AI" part of curriculum. The courses here are very industry oriented and will land you a job for sure even if you just follow the courses(properly), although a lot of courses in first year are useless for certain branches( like engineering drawing for AI etc), but otherwise courses are provided to the branches as required by the industry. The number of courses provided per branch per semester should be reduced and depth should be increased. For example In a course physics of waves in first year, interference, refraction, quantum mechanics, vector mechanics, electrodynamics are all taught but each course is tough only from surface level which makes it useless to all the branches in which further physics of waves will not be taught(if physics of waves will be taught in future semesters then this creates a good base and is useful) like for AI, Cs, Geophysics, geology etc. The frequcney of exams is twice a semester and some or other test is taken nearly every week( which most students don't take that seriously as cheating is very easy and also. It constitutes very low wheightage), the level of difficulty is a a bit above jee advance level for courses with relative grading while advance level for courses with absolute grading.
Internships Opportunities
companies offering internships include Microsoft, Google, Intel, Tata Steel, JP Morgan, Adobe, and Accenture. Roles offered are software development, data science, AI research, core engineering, consulting, and financial analysis. Stipends range from ?20,000 to ?2,40,000 for the entire internship, depending on the company and role Projects focus on topics like machine learning models, automation systems, financial modeling, and structural design, backend bug fixing etc often leading to innovations or publications?.
Placement Experience
Campus placements and internships in IIt kgp are managed by CDC (Career devolopment center) of IIT kgp, students are eligible for on campus internship from 3rd year while for placements from 4th year, All the big companies, quant companies give offers to students at IIT KGP, around 80+% ug students are placed on campus and many go for higher education which means almost all students are moving forward in their career, I plan to innovate in field of AI and I aim to incorporate AI in fields of finance and automation in managements of various stuff. I'd like to work on my own and be able to hire people to help scale my ideas but if it doesn't work out, I don't mind working in some MnC in field of AI or backend.
Fees and Financial Aid
The total year wise fees is 3,12,500 which is divided as follows for 1 semester- Fees for Hall Budget is 1000.00 Fees for Mess Charges is 14500.00 Fees for Hostel Overhead Charges is 970.00 Fees for Medical Registration is 200.00 Fees for Registration is 400.00 Fees for Library Caution Money is 1000.00 Fees for Hall Establishment Charge is 20130.00 Fees for Hostel Caution Money is 4000.00 Fees for Institute Caution Money is 1000.00 Fees for Alumni Subscription is 2000.00 Fees for Students Brotherhood Fund is 200.00 Fees for Gymkhana is 600.00 Fees for Technology Film Society is 100.00 Fees for Tuition Fee is 100000.00 Fees for Student Welfare Fund is 300.00 Fees for Medical Examination is 200.00 Fees for Statuary Fee is 1500.00 Fees for Hostel Admission Fee is 1000.00 Fees for Modernisation Fee is 700.00 Fees for Examination is 500.00 Fees for Student Amenities is 800.00 Fees for Hostel Seat Rent is 750.00 Fees for Internet Connectivity is 600.00 Fees for Electricity & Water Charges is 1000.00 Fees for Laboratory Contingency is 800.00 Fees for Student Welfare Policy is 2500.00 Obc and general students gave the same fees, while for sc/st students tution fees was ommmited meaning 2,00,000 lesser fees per year. There are scholarships like merit-cum-means scholarship this scholarship provides monetary help based on economic background, there are many other similar scholarships, almost all of which cater to families with annual income less than 8 lakhs for most scholarships while below 6 lakhs for some of them. Also department topper in each department(department does not mean branch rather each department has various branches) gets fees discount. Also their is a scholarship for students scoring more than 60% in advance(which I did but didn't get cause of family income criteria which is family income should be below 8 lakhs).
Campus Life
There are majorly three manual fests in IIt kgp, Kshitij-Asia's biggest Techfest which will be conducted in January 2025 this time, SHOURYA-IIT kgp's sports fest whcih provided opportunities to students from all other iits and kgpians to showcase their talent in sports, lastly Springfest is the most popular among them which is the cultural fest of IIT kgp. Nearly all the classes are taken within a big complex called Nalanda, where their are many halls, all the classes have a centralized cooling system and accomodation per classroom varies from 50 to 300 students. IIT kgp has one the Asia's biggest library, also it accommodates 1000s of students on daily bases, timings are 9:00 am to 11:40 pm while it stays open 24 hrs one week before end sem exams or mid sem exams. The library also has digital libraries and provides excess to all paid platforms required for getting excess to e books, journals, thesis and research articles. Enough facilities are their in IIT kgp for the purpose of learning and further research for undergraduate students. IIT KGP has many clubs which are student run, or funded by technology gymkhana, clubs cater almost all the interest a student may have, The dramatics clubs of iit kgp are top notch and always have podium finishes at inter IIT dramatics meets. 180 DC which is the world's biggest student run consultancy also is a club in iit kgp. These clubs help students get our of their comfort zone and also help them sharpen their real life skills while simoultaneously letting them explore their interests.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facility quality varies from hostel the hostel, all the first year students are accommodated in Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence, which has capacity of 2000+ students, it has clean washrooms and spacious triple sharing rooms, almost all hostels have triple sharing or single sharing rooms, and a very interesting and important thing is that in case the hostel/hall has triple or double sharing rooms you are allowed to have roommates of your choice, which is a very good feature. Meals also depends from hostel to hostel but meals are properly planned according to nutrition required and are better than expected from a hostel. Registration process for the hostels is very simple and takes less than a few hours and is done on the spot offline at the time you come the campus, the fees is nearly 1 lakh year including mess and everything and you must live in hostel(no other choice is provided). PG/Room options are not available.
Admission
Except CS in top 6 IITs I had the opportunity to pursue any course in any college of the country, out of all the opportunities I chose IIT kgp because of combination of various reasons which very good campus life( clg is in a isolated city, so campus life is all you got and it is very very good), very less toxic competition compared to other iits where academic toxicity is very high because of department change opportunities), department specific courses even from the first year, a lot of industry oriented clubs and societies which help the students get in touch with the real world and also help them explore their interests. As I said earlier, I got rejected from CD of top 6 IITs, the reason for that is I never believed I could make it to top 100 or ranks like that and never prepared for the same, I realized it was easily possible for me if I had taken JEE seriously and had walked on path guided by my teachers at all*n which I didn't cause I had in my mind that I will surely get a top 1000 rank cause of my natural excellence in logic based activities but never tried for a exceptional rank cause I thought they had to start preparing from 8-9th grade while I started from 11 th grade. JEE Advanced is the only exam through which you can get into IIT kgp for a btech course, while there Is different exam for getting into BA and BeD in IITs, also there is a exam for getting into Barch. These three are the only ways to get into my college at an undergraduate level, while Gate allows you to enter iitkgp for mtech and other higher study options.
Faculty
Student faculty ratio is 14 faculty(Teaching assistants and professors) members per student. Which I felt is more than enough. The faculties and TAs are more than approachable ( if you want to approach them which most people don't try to), debraj sir of physics is the most dedicated teacher I've ever seen, he tries to include each and every student and asks students are teaching every topic if they any doubts and genuinely tries to solve them. Otherwise TAs don't have much knowledge in relation to teaching or understanding student problems, they just know the solution to the questions being discussed and nothing else, they are usually not able to find mistakes in your solutions or don't know the subject deeply enough. Regarding exams, their are majorly two exams each semester firstly mid semester which account for 30% of total grades and Secondly end semester which account for 50% of total grades, other 20% depend on course, mostly it constitutes 75%( of the 20%) by tests(which are usually twice a semester and average is taken) and 25%(of 20%) for attendance and other relative things decided by professor. For labs, the marking system is completely different and it varies from one lab to other substantially
Interview Experience
No there were no group discussions or interviews, only JEE Advanced scores were considered for selection. I started my jee preparation in 11th grade at all*n coaching center in my city jodhpur, I loved maths and physics and so the journey was not too rough, I always prioritize logical understanding and conceptual understanding over rote learning and learning how to solve questions. These were the main factors which I feel led to an AIR 683 rank.
Night Life
Their is a night canteen in almost all the hostels in campus, many of them are coed(not all), also the campus is very very safe at night, but you can't say the same about outside the campus region as Kharagpur is a suburban town. So your life will mostly be restricted inside the camous(very important criteria if you are looking forward to admit into iit kgp), you're free to roam anywhere inside the campus 24×7. Their are lot of cafes and restaurants including popular chains like Domino's, cafe coffee day etc, but they close at around 12 am, while night canteens like night canteens of VS, HJB, JCB halls are open till 4 am. These are also the common hangout spots, other hangout spots inside are gymkhana, academic building, vikramshila complex etc. Their are not many good hangout spots outside the campus, except a cinema hall called the Bombay cineplex.
