Faculty

The facfulty members at St. Xavier's College are all very highly qualified and are able to do their jobs well. They are approachable and are able to tackle all doubts and queries brought to them with ease. At the college, every semester, students are required to appear for a mid-semester examination (also known as Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA)). These are 40 mark papers which are later brought down to 20 when calculating the students' final grade. They are also required to appear for a 70 mark end-semester examination which is carried forward as it is towards their final grade. The students also appear for a 5 mark assignment whose marks are added up for the final grade and the remaining 5 marks are awarded to the students on the basis of their attendance and regularity in class.

Course Curriculum Overview

Economics is an extremely modern and relevant subject in today's day and age. In my opinion, it is one of those subjects that everyone should have a basic understanding of to be able to understad what is going on in the world around them. The curriculum at St. Xavier's College Kolkata aligns with my views. The curriculum is extremely thorough and covers important micro and macro concepts which prepare the students well for an overall understanding of the subject in the real world. Examinations are conducted twice each semester which holds up well with the course material as it allows us to have time to study whatever has been taught without being rushed into it.

Faculty

Faculty is good. Their teaching methods are engaging and they are very knowledgeable in their fields. They are very experienced teachers as well. They are approachable and helpful. The head of the department in my course has interesting lectures and teaches in a way that makes knowledge easier to absorb. There is no faculty I particularly did not like. They are 2 exams in a semester which are the mid semester exams and end semester exams. The mid semester exams have a weightage of about 20 marks and are relatively easier. The end semester exams have a weightage of 70 marks. Attendance has weightage of 5. Assignments have a weightage of 5 marks as well. Exams, overall, are not easy but they are not particularly difficult either.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course curriculum is aligned with NEP guidelines and updated. It includes multidisciplinary courses and internship requirements along with participation in social activities which leads to holistic development of individuals. It helps to prepare the students for professional endeavours and real-world challenges. It is also more mathematical which I prefer. The course could benefit from more real-world exposure. Exams take place twice in a semester. There are mid-semester exams and end-semester exams. They are not easy and requires students to keep up with the academics as classes go on but they are quite manageable.

All my professors are PhD holders barring one person who is presently completing his PhD. One professor teaching environmental economics completed her environmental economy education from Japan. Our HOD is a seasoned academician. He is my favourite as he leaves our class with a question he solved in the next class making us think about solutions. Most professors are approachable within college hours. Some even allow online conversations for doubt clearing. Some professors are quite strict about timings for classes. Their notes come in handy during exams. Papers range from moderate to difficult. However, studying with regularity makes exams manageable.

Campus Life

The societies are fantabulous. The experience is absolutely mind boggling. Someone asked me in a commerce-allied society interview that I am in a desert and I need to sell someone a raincoat. I was given a minute to prepare a pitch leaving me awestruck but I somehow managed one! Competitions go hectic. There are too many already in the first place and we often tend to lose track of things…unable to decide which events to join and which ones to leave. We have consulting, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, TEDX, NSS,NCC, Enactus, commerce, management, economics, fine arts and and sociological societies and clubs. It is just too much to grab.

Faculty

The faculty- to- student ratio is pretty decent . Most of the professors are quite approachable and open to clearing doubts if you make the effort to reach out. When it comes to economics department , the faculty is a mixed bag. Its not that they dont know the subject - most of them are pretty well verse in the subject it's just that some of them dont put much effort into teaching . Some professors are actually helpful while others just go through the motion. .

Fees and Financial Aid

I persued Bsc. Economics at Shri Shikshayatan College, and to be honest the fees structure felt quite steep compared to the overal academic experience. At the time of admission, I paid around 19k for the first semester. After that I paid around 20k per semester and an extra of rupees 355 as examination fees. Over the three years, the total expenses added up significantly , especially for a non-technical undergraduate course.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees structure for Bachelor's in Economics in APCRGC under NBU are as below : The initial amount during admission was 2400 and this included the admission fees and the fees for the first semester which is the tuition fee and per semester we have to pay Rs 2000 as admission into the next semester with including the tuition fee and during semester exams we have to pay 1000 rupees as exam fee. There are two scholarships available in this college to the students firstly the oasis scholarship and the Swami Vivekananda scholarship the Swami Vivekananda scholarship includes 18000 rupees sanctioned to B.Sc students and 12000 sanctioned to BA students.

Faculty

The faculty is very good in our college and the faculty to student ratio is 4:30 which helps the student in covering the syllabus and proper understanding also before the semester exams the students have to pass a test conducted by the college Administration and the faculties in order to be qualified for the semester exams which helps in overhead preparation for the semester exams. I like all faculties of our college as there very much supportive and help students in all fields related to the campus and the studies.

There are exams at the end of each semester so twice in every academic year. There are some external subjects which have tests and final exams and 2-3 subjects are internal subjects which dont have finals and have other modes of evaluation, vivas ,class tests etc. There are midterm exams after 2 months of the commencement of the semester. These are of 20 marks. The finals are of 40 marks. The rest 40 marks are divided in projects, writings, research, assignments etc. The faculty student ratio is maintained nicely. Each class has a minimum of 35 and a maximum of 60 students amounting to 190 in the whole batch.

Placement Experience

The college does work hard towards placements. There is a placement cell club as well which is headed by a faculty member and run by the students themselves. There are various programs happening regularly in the city , example:- how to build your CV. Not many students want a placement immediately after their bachelors so the statistics might be misleading a bit. Out of those who apply around 40-50 students are given placements in campus. The rest work for it themselves and it aint that hard if you have the credentials for it. A senior of mine got a placement of 8.5L last week

Campus Life

• Every year in the month of January social fest is organised by the college. • The range and accessibility of books and journals available in the library is very huge. • The facilities available in the classrooms are average. • Every year Inter-college badminton tournament is held in the college campus. • Students union group is run by the students themselves and their student life is not impacted by that.

Faculty

• The faculty to student relationship is very good and the faculty members are quite approachable. • The name of the faculty that I liked is Mr. Pratha Chatterjee. I liked him because he is very understanding and helpful. All the faculty members are quite good. • There are 3 years and 6 semesters so we have to give 2 exams every year and the exams are not difficult. The course curriculum is totally relevant.

Faculty

The faculty to student ratio is 20:1. In my experience, the faculty members approchablity varied. Some of them were really interactive and were always there for help . They encouraged and guided all the students thorughout the course. I particularly appreciated professor P.Thapa who taught Indian Economics and S.Das who was incharge of Game Theory. Both of these mentors really have unique style of teaching and it was always a quick and interesting class with them. Their illustrations and way of explanation is of top notch. The concepts taught by them are so easy and simple to comprehend. There were some instaces where I felt that the Macroeconomic and Econometrics faculty members teaching was not really cleara and conductive to understanding. These were the most complex subjects and were taught with just limited theory paper and some examples. The academic curriculum covered 2 exams each for all the semester. First exam was the internal assessment and was of 30 marks and the final exams was of 70 marks. The internal assessment was of moderate level but the final exam was really lenghty and complex. The exams are generally difficult , given this there were 3-5 students who could not clear the exams.

Course Curriculum Overview

I would rate the course curriculum in terms of relevance as moderately relevant. My decision to choose this course was primarily influenced by its research learning facility and practical based learning. The curriculum helps each individual to prepare for further comepetitive exams and expanding their jobs option with full and profound knowledge of data based works and computer skills. To enhance the course curriculum and teaching methods , I would suggests dedicating deep learning with lots of real life examples, updating the syllabus to recent advancements Providing recorded lectures would be of so much help and providing more opportunities for students to present their work giving them detailed feedback would improve the skills and learning capacity of the students.

Course Curriculum Overview

the program emphasizes core economic theories , mathematical techniques, and statistical methods. the inclusion of maths, stats, and econometrics helps in developing analytical and problem - solving skills, all of which are important for real world. there is exposure to various branches of economics. the curriculum integrates data analysis, evaluation, and case studies, which are useful in careers in academia, corporate sector, banking, etc. According to me the places to improve include: Update the curriculum with emerging topics Professors being a little more student friendly more practical exposure more research opportunities there are semester wise exams and due to covid we had to cover a lot in less time than usual. It is a difficult course but doable.

Faculty

the faculty to student ratio is like 7:40 The faculties are approachable for academic queries. I really liked to study under Professor Mousumi Dutta in the Economics department. I liked her teaching because it was very systematic and easy to understand. I did not like a certain professor, I would not like to name him/her. There are semester wise exams as well as 2 small internal exams every semester and mid sem exams. In our batch there were a handful of students who failed certain semesters as it was quite difficult to pass these exams.

Fees and Financial Aid

Our college has basically government funded so the fees for Science Hons is around 8k-10k per year everything included in it like exam fees etc, and the same for Arts or commerce is 7k-8k and for general even less. The placement could be better, it's avg is 16k-18k which need to improve in future, although some go for the master's degree after here, our college also provide M.A. Hons for Bengali. Management and Canteen need to improve. Students financially weak get Vivekananda Scholarship from government schemes. As for Economics it is best college in Hooghly district.

Faculty

The student to faculty ratio is 1:40, the faculty are mostly helpful and some of them are approachable, the best faculties are the following - Economics, Physics, Political science, maths and which needs attention are Bangla, Commerce, History. Examination are moderate to high for Hons and moderate for General.

The faculty-to-student ratio is almost the same in that the students are less and the thing is I'm an Alumni of the College and mine is the 1st batch in the college for this course. So There are some faculties that I liked the most because they were good at us like AnantRamu sir and Aishwarya Ma'am. There are no faculties that I didn't like. We used to have 2 main exams in each semester and Assignments in between.

Ans. Your job ambitions and personal interests determine whether you should study EMS at Mount Carmel Bangalore or Economics at NMIMS Mumbai. BSc EMS programme emphasises environmental management, sustainability, and conservation. This programme teaches students how to manage and reduce human impacts on the environment. A BSc in Economics studies the economy, including production, distribution, and consumption of products and services. Ques. How is the BSc Economics program at NMIMS Bangalore? I’m on the waitlist for the Mumbai campus so I want to know if I should consider Bangalore or wait for the list for Mumbai to come out.

● Top Answer By Anita Malhotra on 23 May 23

Ans. NMIMS Bangalore BSc Economics program has unique course content and innovative pedagogy. It helps in developing an individual to seamlessly integrate into an organization or to be an entrepreneur. The linkages of different quantitative methods have led NMIMS to set up a School of Economics. Mumbai is the financial capital of India and taking a shot at the admission waitlist will be worth waiting because if you get into the Mumbai campus, the level of exposure you will get will not be at par with any other city in India. If your waiting list number is beyond the acceptable limit then you should consider the Bangalore campus as well.Read more

Ques. Which is a better choice- Ashoka University B.Sc Economics and Finance or NMIMS Mumbai BSc Finance?

● Top Answer By Anuraag Das on 29 Apr 23

Ans. Ashoka University and NMIMS Mumbai have excellent economics and finance programs. Before choosing, evaluate the differences between the two. Ashoka University is a young institution known for its creative and multidisciplinary curriculum. Its BSc Economics and Finance program teaches students economic theory, financial markets, and quantitative and analytical abilities. The program emphasizes critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving, which are useful in many occupations. However, NMIMS Mumbai has long offered undergraduate finance programs. Its BSc Finance program teaches students about financial markets, investment analysis, and corporate finance, as well as how to flourish in these disciplines. Internships and industry projects emphasize experiential learning. Ashoka University or NMIMS Mumbai depends on your job goals and preferences. Ques. Where should I get Economics Honor, Jadavpur University in Kolkata or Symbiosis School of Economics?

● Top Answer By Niraj Shah on 01 Apr 23

Ans. If you are unsure about which college to choose for your higher education, it is important to consider what you want to achieve in the future. If you are looking to secure a job soon after graduation, then Symbiosis School of Economics may be the better option for you. The college has a strong reputation for its placement opportunities, with a dedicated placement cell that works towards providing job opportunities to its students. Symbiosis School of Economics grooms its students to make them the perfect hire for big-shot companies, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the job market. On the other hand, if your goal is to pursue a career in academia, then Jadavpur University (JU) may be the better choice for you. While JU does offer some placement opportunities to its students, the focus is more on academic studies. Jadavpur University students tend to go on to pursue master's and even doctorates and are less inclined to just graduate and get a job. While Symbiosis School of Economics and Jadavpur University have their respective strengths, the choice ultimately depends on your personal goals and preferences. If you are looking for a college that can provide you with strong placement opportunities, then Symbiosis School of Economics may be the better option for you. However, if you are looking to pursue a career in academia and value academic excellence, then JU may be the better choice.Read more

Ques. Are there any placements at DU for B.Sc students?

● Top Answer By Aruna Kakkar on 10 Oct 22

Ans. When a 12th-grade student enrols in a prestigious Delhi university, he or she has many hopes for placement and compensation. However, only 1% of students are placed in the top colleges. B.Sc. is solely academic in nature. You should never have unrealistic expectations of receiving gleaming packages after completing your B.Sc. To get a job in this field, you will need to further your education. The main advantage of studying at DU is the exposure you will receive. It will aid in your personal development.Read more

Ques. What is the criteria for applying for B.Sc. economics in Bethune college?

● Top Answer By Sreetama Mukherjee, on 18 Nov 21

Ans. There are no particular criteria to apply for Economics at Bethune College. Any 12th passed student can apply for the course. They mainly consider the aggregate marks of your best 3 or 4 subjects. The selection is completely merit-based. Just keep an eye on the website during the admission period, which is usually June or July. Look out for admission notifications. Once the online admission portal is open, fill out the admission form with the required details.  You have to choose 2 General Elective (GE) subjects apart from your major. These subjects will be for the first 2 years.  With Economics Honours, students usually take Statistics and Mathematics for the GE subjects. You will have to scan and upload a few documents like your identity proof (Aadhar card/voter card/pan card/driver’s license/passport) or your admit card for class 10 boards and your class 12 boards marksheet. As the entire admission process is now conducted online, you also need to pay the fee for the application online.Read more

Ques. I am going to start my B.Sc. Economics Honours from Bethune College of Calcutta University. Can you give me some advice?

● Top Answer By Isha Khurana, on 18 Nov 21

Ans. Bethune College is one of the renowned colleges in West Bengal. As you have opted for B.Sc Economics One of my friends also studied at Bethune College, so I might be able to provide some tips about this: Buy a last 5-year question or CBCS system previous year’s question as soon as possible.  Calcutta University tends to give the same question in an odd-even-year system. Solve those papers and prepare accordingly as 60% of the questions will be similar. Make sure you utilize the profit of the online exam system. You can score 15-20% extra than offline exams.  After the regular college classes if you need extra guidance to go for a coaching centre suggested by your seniors. Keep in touch with your seniors frequently, as they can guide you through a lot of things. Lastly, as Bethune is a very strict college, try to enjoy your college life, maintain a good relationship with your teachers and work hard and study well to make a successful career.Read more
