What Students Say
Likes
- The location is super convenient - being located in the central Kolkata made it easy to and from college.
- The infrastructure is pretty decent with clean and air-conditioned classrooms. The overall campus is also clean and felt very safe.
- One of the things that i liked is the discipline. The environment is very strict, structured and safe which is ideal for a good learning experience.
Dislikes
- When it comes to academics for the economics department, there is an enormous room for improvement. While some professors were actually helpful, in general we had to study most of the syllabus on our own. The faculty members kept changing frequently
- The fees structure for the kind of facilities and placement opportunities wasn't justified. There wasn't any scholarships or financial aid .
- Campus life overall was dull. There weren't any fests which felt monotonous after a point.
Course Curriculum Overview
I've always found economics to be really interesting and thats why I choose to persue it. I wanted to dive deep into the actual concepts and workings of the economy and understand how the world works from an economist's point of view. Sadly the curriculam doesnt bridge the gap between theory and real life. It focuses heavily on textbook and not how the world works.
Fees and Financial Aid
I persued Bsc. Economics at Shri Shikshayatan College, and to be honest the fees structure felt quite steep compared to the overal academic experience. At the time of admission, I paid around 19k for the first semester. After that I paid around 20k per semester and an extra of rupees 355 as examination fees. Over the three years, the total expenses added up significantly , especially for a non-technical undergraduate course.
Campus Life
When it comes to campus life, it was very dull. One of the major drawbacks was the lack od annual festivals due to lack of sponcership. That meant we missed out on fun, large scale events which usually brings college campus to life.
Admission
I had applied for quite a number of colleges including Lady Brabourne, Scottish Chruch, Maulana Azad etc. I was accepted to MAC as well as lady brabourne. I rejected MAC because according to people it wasnt a good college however for Lady braboune just before their acceptance, I had already paid ssc the admission fees and couldnt back out.
Faculty
The faculty- to- student ratio is pretty decent . Most of the professors are quite approachable and open to clearing doubts if you make the effort to reach out. When it comes to economics department , the faculty is a mixed bag. Its not that they dont know the subject - most of them are pretty well verse in the subject it's just that some of them dont put much effort into teaching . Some professors are actually helpful while others just go through the motion. .
Night Life
Our classes usually wrapped up around 4pm and we wanted to strech our days furthera little bit before heading home. Unfortunately SSC didnt provide any gym or on campus nightlife. The canteen too was closed after 4 and remained permanently closed on Saturdays
Other Applied Colleges
