What Students Say
Likes
- Campus is nice. There's greenery and all
- SOME of the faculties are really good and those said teachers will actually look out for you and care
- Mentors are appointed for each students who are responsible for their final year project, publications and LORs. If you are lucky, you'll get a good mentor.
Dislikes
- Classrooms are less compared to the number of students. Students have to wander around the building after each classes to find seats. Classrooms are very dirty
- There's literally NOTHING in the labs. Experiments take way long to prepare and perform because reagents and equipments are never available.
- Hardly a 2 week summer break (because of MAKAUT). Students cannot even apply to good internships because no lab would take in external students in july or august.
Course Curriculum Overview
Syllabuses of the core subjects are designed by MAKAUT and college has no role in this. However minors that are majorly computer science based subjects aren'nt really relevant in that case. Programming languages that are used mainly in bioinformatics and others like R ,Python or softwares like Bash , they aren'nt taught. Minor syllabus focuses on theory more rather than hands on. Also in senior classes subjects based on management and marketing are introduced which has no relation with the major. They are time consuming and not scoring
Internships Opportunities
For BSc 4 years, 1 internship is compulsory after 4th semester. IAS SRFP is a good opportunity that offers internship even to tier 3 colleges and 5 to 6 people from our batch got it last year. For others, college for the longest time had no plans or initiatives. Students who arranged for internships by themselves had to take NOC and LOR from authorities which is a whole another round of process (and problem) and then attend. Those who could not secure an internship were sent from by college for 2 weeks. Stipend was not provided ,they had to pay for the internship. So authorites wont plan anything from before.
Placement Experience
People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.
Fees and Financial Aid
Fees per semester is around 40 -50k. Caution money is 10k, tuition fee is around 40k for each semester. Scholarships and student credit schemes are also available for few. Overall, gnipst is quite affordable over other private colleges in or around Kolkata
Campus Life
one cultural fest happens each year and that is not really that good i did not enjoy. They take 800 rs for the same and not really provide any experience worth that much. Seniors will come and literally bully you into paying for the fest. Small events like freshers, farewell or prediwali are fun but you have to wear your uniform in most times. Campus life depends on the people you spend time with. Its not bad. No such technology in classrooms and it becomes terrible during summers. No AC except for auditorium or smart classroom. Library and related facilities are good. During JIS Spirit, sports and other activities happen which is nice. Clubs are not so relevant in college, depends on who are running them. Students are not interested and coordinators are biased.
Admission
I applied to SXC but missed it since my aggregate was 8 marks less than the final cutoff. I had heard good things about GNIPST from a senior in school who did her BSc from here as well. In her time, authorities and everything were far better than what it is now. I had applied to Asustosh and LBC for Microbiology but their results came out way too late. Got Asutosh on their 5th list but admission here was done already by then. Got SNU as well but SNU is not really that good as far as I know. Admission process is simple but i wont really recommend anybody to come here
Faculty
Faculty members in the department of life sciences are less comapred to the students. Again, not all of them are good and approachable. Good ones know exactly who they are :) FEW teachers teach well, provide notes, clarify doubts, supervises lab really well and are helpful and friendly. Otherwise there are some who are not friendly and approachable at all. faculty feedbacks aren't considered ,so the same teacher might be appointed again in the next sem inspite of complaints. Exams are conducted by MAKAUT. We have four internals (CAs) which aren't really THAT tough. CA4 which is an online mcq exam taken a week before finals is honestly unnecessary. If you study well, you can score well in finals however since the university likes making money they'll score you less intentionally to charge later and increase marks in subjects that should have brought good marks anyways.
Night Life
There are a couple of places to eat near college so thats fine. Also sodepur is literally the hub of all famous food places. There's no gym in campus. People usually hangout in the greens or benches. Cannot really comment on hostel timings.
