The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), established in 1966, is a private, minority-run institution in Kolkata, West Bengal. The college is affiliated with the University of Calcutta and accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ grade.

In 2025, Collegedunia ranked BESC as the 15th best BBA/BMS college in India and 2nd in Kolkata.

BESC offers 14 UG programs in Arts, Commerce, Management, and Science, as well as two PG programs in English and Commerce. Additionally, the college provides career-oriented courses like Commerce+, ACCA, CFP, Corporate Communication, Capital Market, Cyber Security, and Global Management Skills.

BESC Courses & Fees 2025

BESC offers 16 programs in total: 14 UG and two PG. The degrees are conferred by the University of Calcutta, and per its curriculum, all UG honours programmes follow the 4-year structure, with an exit option after the 3rd year.

Completion of 4 years earns a UG Honours or with Research Honours.
Students can opt for research projects or desert action in the fourth year.
Exit after 3 years (with required credits) awards a Bachelor’s Honours degree.

BESC Admission

The BESC admission process is entirely online and merit-based. No entrance test is conducted for any program.

The BESC Admission procedure rejects candidates who have a gap of more than three years since passing the last qualifying examination (Class 12).

BESC Scholarship

BESC presents the Bhawanipur Scholarship Scheme to 200 students admitted in Semester I, subject to the eligibility criteria.

Aggregate % (best of five) of subjects in Class XII board examination should be above 90%.
Semester I fee must be paid online, which will be refunded after the Semester II examination.
70% of the fees from Semester II onwards will be waived off.

Ques. How is BESC Kolkata?

Ans. If you're serious about academics and have clear goals, you need to stay focused. But if your interests lie in fields like dance, singing, acting, or other media-related careers, then BESC is a great place for you—it offers a lot of opportunities in those areas.

The faculty is also good enough. But at the end of the day, how well you study depends entirely on you. Many students here come from wealthy families and often take college lightly, spending their time and money without much purpose. Coming from a middle-class background myself, I understand the value of education and the importance of making the most of it.

Ques. Does BESC offer hostel facilities for outstation students?

Ans. Yes, hostel facilities are available, especially for students from outside Kolkata. However, hostel seats are limited, and preference is usually given based on merit and distance from home. It's advised to apply early and check the hostel application process separately.

Ques. Where is the BESC situated?

Ans. BESC is located at 5, Elgin Rd, Sreepally, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700020. The college was built with the efforts and donations of money and land by the Gujarati Community living in Kolkata.

Ques. What Course Structure does the BESC follow?

Ans. BESC follows both Semester and Non-Semester courses. In the semester-wise courses offered, the Candidates have to appear for the examination twice a year, and there is a choice-based credit system also. For non-semester courses, the students need to attend the annual examination to qualify for the next year.

Ques. When do the classes commence at BESC?

Ans. BESC has the admission and application procedure taking place in June and August. After the completion of the Admission process, the classes start in September every year.

Ques. Is there any refund policy followed by BESC?

Ans. Yes, the refundable caution deposit of INR 5,000 is charged in addition to the 1st semester, so that if any applicant wants to withdraw the admission from BESC, then they can get a refund.

Ques. I’m from a different state. Can I apply for admission to BESC?

Ans. Yes, BESC accepts students from all over India. However, SC/ST reservation benefits apply only to candidates with valid West Bengal SC/ST certificates. Out-of-state applicants must meet the general category eligibility.

I really like the professors of the college. They are very helpful and also gives extra classes if required to the weak students
The classrooms are clean and well maintained. All the classrooms are equipped with ACs and projectors.
The seniors are supportive and helpful in nature. They form clubs through which we can participate and show our talents .

Dislikes

The College doesn't give good marks in the tutorials or project which causes low marks in the university report card.
The canteen of the college is expensive and not equipped with an ac.
Sometimes the college doesn't inform about the holidays before and suddenly they inform when the students already reached the college campus.

Fees structure and various scholarships available in campus

1. The total fees of a particular year is 60000 where the first sem fees is 32105 and the second sem fees reduces to 27895 . 2. We have to pay the caution deposit and sem fees in the next semesters. Caution deposit is 2000 and the sem fees is 28370. It varies in other courses. 3. One of my friends from B com morning department pays 42900 every semester. 4. 1. Merit-Based Scholarships Eligibility: Students with outstanding academic performance in their previous exams (class 12 or university exams). Amount: Varies based on performance and specific criteria. 2. Financial Aid for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) Eligibility: Students from financially challenged backgrounds with valid income proof. Amount: Partial to full tuition fee waiver, depending on the applicant's situation. 3. Sports Scholarships Eligibility: Students excelling in sports at state, national, or international levels. Amount: Varies based on the level of achievement and sport. 4. Creative Arts Scholarships Eligibility: Students excelling in music, dance, art, or other cultural activities. Amount: Varies based on talent and contributions to college activities. 5. Government Scholarships (Applicable in Collaboration) Kanyashree Prakalpa: For female students meeting the criteria set by the Government of West Bengal. Internship opportunity in various organization

HDFC bank , Zomato, ABP group , Radio Mirchi are some of the companies which offers internships to this college . I personally did internship from Maruti Suzuki where I had to make reports on the sales of maruti cars and later a viva was conducted where i got full marks.

faculty views , course curriculum and examination pattern

1. The faculty to student ratio is approximately 1:25. The faculties does give efforts to the students who attend classes regularly and behaves with them well. Those who don't attend classes they are being kind of ignored by the faculty. 2. English Faculty - Majority of the professors of the English Faculty are good and they help us whenever we text them over WhatsApp regarding doubts or ask them in the classes. Journalism and Mass communication Faculty - The professors of this Faculty are cool and provide all the notes precisely. They don't care much about the attendance and gives a lot of marks in the tutorials . 3. I didn't like the Film Studies Faculty because of the professors of the Faculty violently behaved with the students and gave low marks in the tutorials. 4. College conducts some class tests of around 20 marks through Google form and rest are the university exams. Nowadays many students are failing to clear the exams due to strict checking by the university. The course curriculum is relevant as it focuses on critical thinking , analytical skills and communication skills also it covers a comprehensive history of english literature which provides with deep knowledge . It gives opportunities to the students to take part in the theaters, debates and other co curricular activities.

Cultural fests , various clubs and facilities in campus

Umang is the biggest festival of the college which is held in December month. All other colleges of the Calcutta University participates here through different events and competitions . Other festivals include independence day celebrations , Navratri, etc. The library of this college is a heaven. It is beautifully organized and all kinds of books are available here. The environment is quiet and the library is also equipped with computers for personal uses. The college have NCC groups, Kabaddi groups , chess groups in the field of sports. The seniors organize blood donation camps every year as a social service where the students participate from all the departments.

Course relevance and examination pattern

1. I choose this course because this course is under University of calcutta and this college is fully justifying it through its standards. 2. The curriculum enhanced my vocabulary skills and analytical skills which prepared me for job interviews. 3. The time management of this course should be improved. Depsite being lot of professors the syllabus for this course doesn't get completed at the end of the semester. 4. The exam timings are good as it happens after every 6 months and the difficulty level is moderate according to me. The exams checking should be a bit on lighter side because too much strict checking put a negative effect on the sgpa of a student.

Admission process and eligibility criteria

1. I applied in Scottish Church college, St pauls cathedral college, st xaviers college, xaviers university, Ashutosh college, jaipuria college. I got confirmed admission forms from jaipuria college, xaviers university and lastly asutosh college. I choosed this college over other college beacuse this college doesn't have any political partys like Students union who were associated with the ruling party of the state. Other colleges does have this problem. 2. I didn't went to xaviers university because the fees was too high for me and rejected other colleges because of the party politics. 3. Just we had to fill up a form from the college website and paid 500 rupees and when my name came out in the merit list i paid the rest of the admission fees through college website and they gave a receipt of the fees and thats how i got admitted. The admission experience was smooth and anyone getting 60% above in 12 th boards can get admission into this college.

Night Life

After the evening classes the students hangouts in the college canteen and sometimes in the library. The campus closes by 9 to 10 pm at night. Our college doesn't have a hostel . Some hangouts places near our college are 1. Forum Mall 2. Haldirams 3. 8th Day Cafe and bakery 4. The biker's Cafe.

We have a ragging free enviroment and the college gets rid of students who does it

I applied to scottish church, jaipuria college and goenka college of commerce Got confirmed from the first two but bhawanipur had the best discipline , teacherd and a smooth easy process and the best campus.it has a ragging free enviroment which is best for me . I got rejected by goenka college of commerce as i could not get their cut off marks . Bcom hons criteria A candidate taking up honours course in a subject must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate (Best of 4 subjects) and 45% marks in the subject

The timing, the faculty and the acceptance the college has is the brownie point. The admission procedure is completely online. And based on merit. Yes, I searched for Shri Shikshayatan college but didn't take admission there as the college timing was too long and felt more like school

Social Interaction the bhawanipur college provides a chances to improve your social skills, speaking skills and allows you to make new friends.
The college has a great infrastructure which helps it to provide it for its large number of students

Dislikes

All though they are not many things to dislike about the college but in my opinion the campus area could be a bit larger to provide for variety of sports

Admission:

I have applied to many other colleges like Goenka Commerce College of Kolkata, Heritage College, St Xavier's College. I choose Bhawanipur College over them because because both Goenka College and Heritage College were far away from my house which would result in a loss of time and energy. The eligibility criteria are pretty easy. Students only need to pass in 12th standard with a decent percentage. But I cleared it easily because I got 89% in ISC. The admission process was fully online, filled an online application, and uploaded the mark sheets. Then, you have to wait for the selection lists and then pay the admission fee and other charges and get the ID card and other documents. The exams in the B.Com course are once every 6 months. Basically, there are 8 semesters spanned over 4 years and there is a semester end exam after every 6 months.

I applied to a few very prestigious colleges like shri shikshayatan , st. Xaviers, lady brabourne and this particular college bhawanipur, even thoigh i had a good percentage of 84 percent yet the other colleges had students with more percentage amd seats got full quite early and bhawanipur has a lot of seats almost meber ending along with a decent cutoff like 50 percentage is enough therefore i chose this

The girl to boy ratio makes it more sensible for boys to respect girls
Overall infrastructure of the college makes it likable

Admission:

I did not apply to any other colleges I only applied to this college due to its surreal campus life and teaching faculties. This was purely on percentage basis, which makes it easier for students to opt in it.
