Course Curriculum Overview

4

Economics is an extremely modern and relevant subject in today's day and age. In my opinion, it is one of those subjects that everyone should have a basic understanding of to be able to understad what is going on in the world around them. The curriculum at St. Xavier's College Kolkata aligns with my views. The curriculum is extremely thorough and covers important micro and macro concepts which prepare the students well for an overall understanding of the subject in the real world. Examinations are conducted twice each semester which holds up well with the course material as it allows us to have time to study whatever has been taught without being rushed into it.

Internships Opportunities

3

The internships offered by St. Xavier's College are also looked into by the Placement Cell. A lot of drives are consulted by the Cell both online and offline during which a variety of students take part in internships. Workshops are also conducted to help hone students' skills and make them better suited for the jobs they wish to apply for.

Placement Experience

4

In today's competitive job market it becomes important for the college to not just help students get degrees but also provide them with placements and internships so that they can have the experience needed to stand at a competitive footing with the rest of the candidates in the world. To look into this, St. Xavier's College has a Placement Cell run by Placements officer Mr. Niladri Sinha under whose guidance, various companies visit the college regularly looking for capable young minds to take under their wing and help provide them with the necessary exposure and experience so that they can combat any obstacles that they face.

Fees and Financial Aid

Students are required to pay an application fees of Rs.1000. Upon admission they are to pay an admission fees of Rs.37,900 which is also the first instalment fees for the first semester. The second instalment being Rs.12,600. During the second semester, the students are required to pay in two instalments-- Rs. 13,900 and Rs.11,400 respectively.

Campus Life

4

Alongside an excellent academic curriculum, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata also boasts of an extremely vibrant campus life. With clubs and societies dedicated to a variety of different fields such as sports, music, dance, debating, entrepreneurship, management, TedX and so forth, there is something for everyone. Each of these societies organise a flagship event in the months of January and February which are usually competitions where anyone and everyone from the college can take part. St. Xavier's College also organises Xabotsav which is one of the biggest inter-college fests and is looked forward to by students all year round.

Admission

Legacy is something that has to be earned and not just something that's given, and St. Xavier's College, Kolkata has a legacy that puts most others' to shame. It was this legacy that motivated me to apply for the college. St. Xavier's College has been known to educate students using efficient curriculum structures, capable professors and all the required technology and facilities. It also has an excellent list of Alumnae in various fields, telling us of the success of the college in shaping young minds to help them contribute to society and the greater good.

Faculty

4

The facfulty members at St. Xavier's College are all very highly qualified and are able to do their jobs well. They are approachable and are able to tackle all doubts and queries brought to them with ease. At the college, every semester, students are required to appear for a mid-semester examination (also known as Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA)). These are 40 mark papers which are later brought down to 20 when calculating the students' final grade. They are also required to appear for a 70 mark end-semester examination which is carried forward as it is towards their final grade. The students also appear for a 5 mark assignment whose marks are added up for the final grade and the remaining 5 marks are awarded to the students on the basis of their attendance and regularity in class.

Night Life

4

St. Xavier's College is located in one of the most lively areas of Kolkata, Park Street. Park Street is known for a variety of cafes and eateries, shopping complexes, as well as activities like Mystery Rooms scattered all over. Its location acts as a great advantage for students who have time to spend at the end of the day or have a surprise free period. In these situations students often just venture out into Park Street which is a five minute walk from the college and find themselves something to do. The college also has eateries right outside the gate for when students are running short of time and need a quick snack.

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

Placement Experience:

The average package offered for such roles ranges between ?2–3 LPA, while the highest package offered to a BSc student is around ?4 LPA, depending on skills and specialization. Overall, around 15–20% of BSc students get placed through campus drives, and many students rely on off-campus opportunities.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum was well thought out as per me but there were subjects that i found absolutely unnecessary. Subjects like history evs and clc were in no way related to my course. Coming to the main subjects Design, Printing, Photography and film and Media Training were absolutely necessary for my course and whilst the faculty for some of these subjects were really bad, some were good. It is also important to mention none of these subjects actually helped us prepare for the real world. Instead internships and freelance helped us more than these subjects could ever do. Exams were held bi monthly to keep track of what we learnt and every 6 months we had our semester exams. Overall if you want to be a media professional INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS WILL HELP YOU MORE THAN A COLLEGE WILL. I am biased on this opinion as my college didnt provide me with the correct guidance and support i needed to make it in the real world.

Placement Experience:

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

Course Curriculum Overview:

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.
