In order to be eligible for PhD admission at Delhi School of Economics, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

• For being eligible to the Ph.D courses at DSE, candidates need to hold a Master's degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in relevant fields from a recognized university.
• For a PhD in Geography, candidates need to secure at least 60% aggregate marks in the postgraduate degree to be eligible.
• A research proposal in the subject is mandatory for both Ph.D in Sociology and a Phd in Geography.
• Candidates must appear for the entrance test conducted by the university.

Admissions to PhD programs at Delhi School of Economics will be based upon two major steps:

Step 1: Candidates are required to appear for the Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET).

Step 2: Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in the entrance exam.

A merit list will be released by the Delhi University containing the name of shortlisted candidates for further selection process. Shortlisted candidates then appear for a second stage assessment which contains both oral as well as written components to test the research aptitude, knowledge of economics, and the synopsis of a research topic that the candidate submitted.

• Final selection will be based upon a particular departmental entrance test which will be a 120 minutes written MCQ Examination and an interview process.
• The students who have already cleared a national level entrance test like CSIR/UGC-NET including JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF, DST-INSPIRE are exempted from the departmental entrance test and appear directly for the interview round.

Delhi School of Economics PhD Course Details

PhD at Delhi School of Economics is offered in below mentioned three specializations:

Course Work: The students seeking admission into the Ph.D. program will be required to complete coursework each semester. There will be 2 semesters and the coursework will be evaluated at the end of each semester. The successful completion of the coursework with a thesis topic in the seminar will decide the confirmation of provisional admission to students into the Ph.D. program. An M.Phil student may also enter into the Ph.D. program at the beginning of the following academic year if he/ she has completed coursework with at least 75% of aggregate marks. Students are required to take 4 lecture-based courses with at least 55% marks in each. If a student fails to pass a course with 55% marks, he/ she will have to take a retest within 12 months.

Thesis Submission: PhD students are required to submit their thesis within six years of the date of provisional registration.

Delhi School of Economics PhD Scholarships

The scholarship is provided to students on the basis of government norms and conditions. The scholarship is also granted to the SC/ST/OBC and other reserved category or minority category students. Applicants for the Ph.D. program can also apply for the UGC-JRF Research Scholarships. UGC (Non-NET) Fellowships of INR 8000 per month with contingency support of INR 8000/ per year. Candidates who appeared and qualified for the NET exam can avail the Non-NET fellowship. Computer service fee from the research students can be waived partially or wholly depending upon the financial hardship of the needful students.
