What Students Say
Likes
- The friendly environment that it provides for the different kind of students coming from different backgrounds, religion and ethnicity is beyond appreciable.
- The student teacher interaction beyond the 4 walls of the classroom grasped my attention since the day one. The teachers are welcoming when it comes to asking questions, friendly and approachable.
- The enormous library with some more than 10K+ books from all kind of sources and all field of studies and each one of them having 5-7 copies each.
Dislikes
- The attendance criteria is a bit too stringent where a student gets debarred for having attendance below 60% and below 75% one needs to pay condonation(money) to be allowed for the examinations.
Course Curriculum Overview
The propspects of this degree is ever-growing. One might get to choose from wider aspects and can switch their higher studies after completing graduation in Statistics. Data Science, pure math, Economics are a few of them. But mostly students tend to aim for IITs and ISI but not to mention their are a variety of options to choose from. The curriculum from semester 1 to semester 6( now semester 8) has been designed for the ulterior benefit of the student going in-depth into the deeper concepts of statistical analysis finely knitted with inferential analysis and linear models as 2 of its mostly used ideas. The frequency of the exams prepares a student well for the final semesters given he/she studies well throughout the year.
Internships Opportunities
There are always some internship opportunities coming up every now and then but one just have to keep an eye at the placement cell notice board time to time. The role one gets depends on the kind of internship one gets into, can be that of an HR role, or junior project manager, Risk analyst/manager, etc.
Placement Experience
when it comes to placements, SXC might not be the best place to start with however there has been a few exceptional cases and in the recent uears students are ending up getting good starting packages approximately 5-6L PA. From semester 5 a student may start sitting for the campus drives and attend the company visits. Mostly, upon completion of graduation students don't sit for the placements since majority of us have plans of pursuing higher education so the margin of students getting placed is a bit shaky. I personally plan to pursue MSc in Economics after completing my graduation.

Campus Life
Our grand annual fest XAVOTSAV is well-known in all over India, as it should be but apart from that their are several societies/ clubs run by student bodies which a re worth joining and contributing for. Be it dancing, singing, art, debate or marketing there's always a society u can count for in Xavier's. A student who wants to upskill their inerpersonal skills, level up their out reach know their seniors from different batches, gain experience and prepare themselves for the real world, joining a few of the societies is a must. It would be a benifit to raise the compulsary non-academic credits at the end of the course. Besides this there is also a ncesssity for completing some 35 hours social work in order to gain the social credits. Sports is an integral part of our college with annual sports events comprising of football, basketball, volleyball, relay , board games, e-sports. There are a number of halls namely Xavier Hall, Jubille Hall, and our grand Depelchin Auditorium.
Admission
As a resident of Kolkata i applied to literally every well-known college in existence in Kolkata. Starting from Presidency to jadavpur to Lady Prabourne to Gokhale to Loreto to St Xavier's and all the others which i coulnd't get to name. The colleges i got into were Jadavpur, Shri Shiksayatan, LBC, Asutosh, Scottish Church, St. Paul's Cathedral and finally Xavier's(my dream institute). The difference was in all of the rest colleges i got into BSc economics whereas SXC was the only college to offer me a seat in BSc Statistics Honors. The cut off was 96% for my year for ISC students(year 2022) and i scored 95% hence lost hope but my name came in the extended 2nd list of candidates being summoned for admission. Admission process was pretty simple just had to visit the college and pay the initial joining amount in the office and started attending classes from the next day after having met the HOD(Ma'am Durba Bhattacharya) that day. Admission is solely on the basis of marks obtained.
Faculty
There are total 8 teachers in our department(bsc statistics honors) and total 49 students which i find pretty decent ratio to deal with. To name any particular teacher whom i like personally would be an injuctice becuase all of them are good in their own ways and teaching methods since they all teach different topics and lectures. All of them are highly qualified holding MA/PHD degrees from renowned universities. As for exam patter its quite unique and organized. Along with 2 end semesters for a year we have continous internal assessments(CIAs) of maximum 20 marks on bifurcated syllabus which includes both theory as well as practical each.
