Remarks

The admission process was relatively smooth. You have to apply from the college's website and enter the required details. Then after some time, the college releases the result of the online counselling based on the JEE Main percentile. The cut-off percentile for different branches is obviously different, the highest being for Computer Science Engineering(CSE) and all the way from Computer Engineering(COE) to Electronics And Computer Science Engineering(ENC) and so on. 50% of the seats are reserved for Punjab Quota Students. The Application Fee was Rs.1000.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

I chose this course because in this we learn both about Computer Engineering and Electronic Engineering. The course curriculum of ENC is a mixture of both ENC and ECE. However, due to this the number of subjects increases making it a bit difficult. The faculty members here are good, but there are some exceptions also. However, overall, faculty members will be nice and really helpful. Some faculty members make efforts beyond their limits to help others and try to provide as much practical knowledge as possible to students. There are two-semester exams in a semester, Mid Sem Exams(MST) and End Sem Exams(EST). It is easy to just pass the exam but relatively difficult to get a good CGPA, you have to go through the subjects nicely and understand the concepts to get a good result.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

There is a project semester in our course scheme at Thapar University. Students must spend at least five months in the industry in that semester. Yes, internship (training) is offered to the students on the campus in that semester, and if any student left an impressive mark with his work, he is offered a placement package too before the fourth year. Many students have completed their internships at next-level companies like JP Morgan, Deloitte, Amazon, Apple, etc. Approximately 30% to 40% of students get an internship. The stipend is around 20k to 40k.

Placement Experience

4

The students are eligible for on-campus internships from the 3rd semester and placement from the 3rd year (the 5th sem). Many companies visit the campus every year. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Paytm and many more companies come to the campus, and the students get nicely placed in these companies. The average package of computer engineering is near about 10-11 LPA. the highest offered package varies from 40-60 LPA based on student performances. Most of the students get placed (more than 95%). The placement percentage and package are obviously higher for CSE and COE followed by ENC.

Fees and Financial Aid

Thapar is quite an expensive college. It cost around 4 lac per year and in this mess and hostel fees are not included. But it is worth spending money because of the facilities it provides. The mess and hostel fee amounts to approximately 1 lac per year, making the total fee around 5 lac per year. Thapar provides a lot of scholarships to its students, the most significant among them being the Merit cum mean scholarship which is granted on the basis of the CGPA obtained in the year of consideration. It is given to the top 10% scorers in each branch. If the scholarship holders maintain their CGPA above 8.5 in each semester, the scholarship is continued. The maximum amount of scholarship for a student is approximately Rs.3,50,000 and the minimum is Rs.80,000.

Campus Life

4.5

Sports facilities: Multiple sports grounds & coaching present. College events: Moderately busy calendar with 1-3 monthly events. Mess food: The variety of food is good, the Quality and taste of food are acceptable, and Mess and Cooking arrangements are hygienic. Attendance policy: Incomplete attendance invites a penalty. Dress code: Students can wear whatever they want. Additional expenses: Requirement to eat out despite mess fees. Outside movement of girl students: Allowed within restricted timings. Classes in some departments have ACs installed, but some classrooms do not have them. There are many clubs and societies, including Microsoft Learn Student Chapter(MLSC), Creative Computing Societ(CCS), Thapar Adventure Club, Thapar Movie Club, etc.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Basic furniture is provided in a hostel-like study table and almirah and chair and a bed with a mattress. Mess is contracted to Sodexo and the food is good. The fees for hostel accommodation is around 50000 and the mess fees are around 20000. The hostel facility is good as there is 24hrs wifi service. Very less power cuts proper cleaning is done by the cleaning staff of the hostel. Room cleaning service is also provided just give a phone call to the cleaning person in the given time slot the cleaning person will come and do the proper cleaning of your room

NITJ has a placement cell, also known as the Centre of Training and Placements(TPO office of NITJ). The placement scenes differ depending on the courses offered. The average placements are 12-14LPA in the Computer Science branch. Every year, hundreds of companies, including Pvt and govt both. PSUs like HPCL and BPCL recruit students based on merit and academic excellence.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
