Remarks
As KNC was part of Delhi University, the eligibility criteria were based on meeting the cut-off. Admissions were given depending on our 12th-grade board results. I had been to colleges both in the North and the South campus but also took a liking to KNC for its organised admission process. Once the cut-offs were released, the students who matched them were taken into the college in groups of 20 or so by volunteers (seniors from the college). We were told exactly where to sit and fill in the form, where to submit the same and had plenty of help in case of queries. The last stage included a one-on-one briefing by senior students of the same course and faculty members who showed us the books for the course and talked to us about what would be expected from us. It was a very smooth process.
Course Curriculum Overview
This particular course was in line with my career goals which is why I chose it. The number of students in a class would usually be around 40-50. We would also have monthly tutorials in batches of 10 with the teachers to discuss themes, topics, papers, etc in detail. The faculty is mostly well qualified with teachers well versed in their subject matters and also linking theoretical studies with national or global matters. We were also given ample freedom to combine pop-cultural references with theoretical philosophies (eg, a Paper on Marxism with reference to Harry Potter, a paper concerning Auteur Theory with reference to Gangs of Wasseypur). Teachers were always encouraging and also guided us beyond the course, also organising sessions with professionals from publishing, writing, marketing or similar backgrounds
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placements in their final year. Usually, about 20-30 companies offer placements that are course-related. Most of them are content, marketing and corporate roles. It would be better if roles from the journalism and publishing sector were also offered. My plans after the degree were to pursue Masters in Journalism from an International University and therefore I didn't sit for the placements. A point of concern was that sometimes placement dates were too close to examination dates and I think it would be better if this could be moved either before or after so that students can prepare adequately for both.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees structure is relatively simple. There is a security deposit that is returned to you after you complete the course and annual payments of around 13,000 are made. There is a dedicated placement cell which invites companies to provide on-campus jobs.
Campus Life
The KNC canteen is a show stopper. You have everything starting from samosas, momos, honey chilli potato to butter naan and shahi paneer and rajma chawal. The infrastructure overall was quite good with open spaces, fields, classrooms. The library is a separate building and is humongous with books from established writers, philosophers and poets. In addition to the Annual Cultural Fest, we would also host the annual literary fest (thematic) largely organised by students with guidance from the teachers. There are various clubs that one can join including debating, dramatics, dance (contemporary), music, etc. There is a college magazine as well as a department newsletter that is run by students and today there also remains a social media presence with regular updates on seminars, publication of works from writers and artists. The College auditorium is well-equipped. There is also an in-house photocopier which students can pay and use (a life saver!)
