Remarks

I took my admission at Aliah Univerity for Master of Arts [MA] in English. I had also applied at Jadavpur University, but I was not selected as I was unsuccessful in the entrance exam. I did not have to avail myself of any quota. To take admission, I had to have at least 45% marks in B.A. English Honours from any recognized university. I had to qualify for an admission test (AUAT) to be selected for the course and then, after qualifying for the test I had to go through the paperwork, submit the anti-ragging statement, and pay the admission fees on the counselling day.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

After completing my B.A. Honours in English I wanted to do further studies into English literature and explore all its possibilities. The professors were very helpful and always ready to help whenever needed. Any student could approach them. All the faculty members are highly qualified, they have all completed their PhD. The semester exams were very punctual. There is a 40 marks written exam followed by a viva of 10 marks. The exams were not very difficult if you have done your homework, the questions are a mix of difficult and easy questions.

Internships Opportunities

2.5

There was a company that offered a content writing internship. It was a paid internship. Many students applied for it, they gave a written exam and then the qualified students were interviewed. Two students from my batch got selected.

Placement Experience

1.5

Campus placement is a new feature in the university as the university is still quite new. This facility, along with internships, is only available for Science and Business students. As I was not from those streams, I did not get the benefits of this facility. However, along with several other classmates, I did qualify for UGC NET. So, my future goal is to pursue PhD and try to become a college professor.

Fees and Financial Aid

The M.A. English course is not expensive at all at Aliah. I had to pay 2250 rupees as a first semester fee + an admission fee. And then 1200, 1450, and 1250 for the second, third, and fourth semesters respectively. All the central and state government scholarships are applicable, you can apply for any of those scholarships through the university.

Campus Life

3.5

There were two annual cultural programs that were organized by the English department, and along with that, national and international seminars were also organized by the university. The library has plenty of books and journals for every department. The library also has WiFi connection and several computers for the use of the students for getting online material and soft copies. Annual sports are also held. There is a WhatsApp group where every student is present, this group is used for important information and announcements.

Placement Experience:

Most of the placements that took place at least for the literature departments ended up with people joining educational institutes and NGOs. Very few joined corporate enterprises like Accenture. But it does provide almost a 5 LPA, if well placed. It is academically rigorous, therefore academics are weighed more than industry.

Placement Experience:

Students are eligible for applying for internships after the 3rd semester, and students can apply for placements only after 4th semester. Companies like Ericsson, Ernst and Young, JPMG makes visits our department for mostly analyst roles for economic and fundamental trading decisions. The highest offer made was 45LPA while the average is 7.5LPA. The median pakage is 8LPA. Almost 90% students secure placements after completing their degree since the Training and placement cell is pretty proactive in securing good company visits. I plan for investing and analyst roles in banking companies. I would sit for placements hoping for the same.
