Engineering in Germany has become a popular choice for Indian Students in the last few years because of affordable education, globally ranked universities and European lifestyle. Some of the top universities in Germany are: Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), and RWTH Aachen University. Germany offers engineering programs across various specialisations at bachelor's, master's and postdoctoral levels. Popular disciplines of engineering include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, Computer Science engineering, automotive engineering, and aerospace engineering.

Most of the public universities in Germany charge no or very low tuition fees from international students. These public universities charge a semester contribution of EUR 300-400 (INR 33,501-44,795) per semester. Public universities in the German state of Baden-Württemberg charge non-EU students a tuition fee of EUR 1,500 per semester in addition to the semester contribution fee. This applies to universities such as KIT, University of Stuttgart, Heidelberg University and University of Freiburg.

Bachelor’s in Engineering in Germany for Indian Students

A Bachelor’s in engineering in Germany is 3-4 years (6 semesters) for most disciplines, shorter than the 4-year B.Tech in India, primarily taught in German. Indian students who want to pursue a bachelor's in engineering in Germany must have at least B2-level German proficiency (TestDaF or DSH) before applying. Students who do not meet direct admission eligibility must complete a 1-year Studienkolleg foundation course followed by the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) examination before beginning engineering studies. Some of the popular programs are mentioned in the table below.

University Name Popular Program Offered Program Fees (EUR)
Technical University Munich Electrical Engineering and Information Technology EUR 12,000 (INR 13.4 lakh) + 300-400 (semester contribution)
KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Civil Engineering EUR 3,000 (tuition)+ 370-400 (semester contribution)
Technical University Berlin Mechanical Engineering EUR 721 (semester contribution)
RWTH Aachen University Computer Engineering EUR 600-640 (semester contribution)
Technical University Dresden Mechanical Engineering EUR 676 (semester contribution)

Important Note: Studienkolleg is a 1-year foundation program that is required for many international students before starting a bachelor’s degree in engineering in Germany.

Can Indian students directly apply after Class 12?

Indian students can apply for a bachelor’s in engineering in Germany after completing Class 12, but direct admission depends on whether their school qualifications meet German university eligibility criteria. Germany follows a 13-year education system, while Indian school education is generally 12 years, so many students may not qualify for direct entry immediately after Class 12.

Students from CBSE, CISCE, or recognised state boards may need one of the following for direct admission eligibility:

  • Completion of 1 year of bachelor’s studies in India from a recognised university
  • A valid JEE Main qualification, depending on the university and APS evaluation
  • Qualification through Studienkolleg, a 1-year preparatory foundation course in Germany

Most public universities also require German language proficiency at the B2-C1 level for bachelor’s engineering programs. Students must additionally obtain an APS certificate before applying for admission and a student visa.
