University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Admission 2027
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg runs two application cycles per year: Winter Semester (starting October) and Summer Semester (starting April). Winter is the primary intake for Indian applicants, with most English-taught Master’s programmes opening slots only in this cycle. For a broader country view see the MS in Germany guide.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Summer Semester 2027 application deadline | January 15, 2027 | Limited English Master’s tracks open in Summer; verify programme-by-programme at fau.eu |
| Winter Semester 2027/28 application opens | Expected April 2027 (based on prior cycle) | Most English Master’s tracks open here; largest intake for Indian applicants |
| APS certificate preparation (India) | Start 8-10 weeks before deadline | Mandatory for all Indian applicants; ₹18,000 fee at APS New Delhi |
| Winter Semester 2027/28 application deadline | Expected July 15, 2027 | Some Master’s programmes carry earlier faculty deadlines from May 31; verify at fau.eu |
| Winter Semester 2027/28 programme start | Early October 2027 | Orientation runs from mid-September 2027 |
Planning note: Indian applicants should complete the APS certificate before submitting the FAU application, since the certificate has to accompany transcripts on upload. Booking an APS slot at the German Embassy in New Delhi 4-6 weeks ahead of the intended submission date avoids missed deadlines.

University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Master’s applicants must demonstrate academic eligibility, English proficiency and credential verification through the APS system.
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year BTech, BE or three-year BSc/BA in a subject-relevant field with a First Division (typically 65-70% aggregate depending on programme).
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85-90 (0-120 legacy scale) depending on department. Business and international programmes ask for the higher band; engineering programmes accept the lower.
- APS certificate: Compulsory for all Indian applicants since November 2022; issued by the German Embassy Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi and required at the point of application.
- Other: GRE and GMAT are not required for FAU’s English-taught engineering Master’s programmes; some business programmes accept them as optional supporting documents.
Bachelor’s applicants add the German B2 requirement (TestDaF 4 in all sections or DSH-2) and the Indian Class 12 senior secondary certificate with subject alignment. A Studienkolleg preparatory year may be required if direct entry criteria are not met.
Key insight: FAU does not offer English test waivers based on medium of instruction alone. Indian applicants who studied Bachelor’s in English at an Indian university still have to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores at the department minimum before the application deadline.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Acceptance Rate 2027
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg does not publish an institution-wide acceptance rate. Public estimates place the overall acceptance rate at around 46% (estimated figure), driven by a mix of open-admission Bachelor’s programmes and selective Master’s tracks.
Selectivity varies sharply by programme. English-taught Master’s tracks in Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Optical Technologies and International Business Studies attract high applicant volumes and admit closer to 15-25% of applicants each cycle. German-taught Bachelor’s programmes and doctoral tracks tend to be less selective for candidates who meet the German B2 or research prerequisites.
Reality check: Indian applicants should treat the 46% headline as a general guideline rather than a programme-level number. A strong BTech CGPA of 8.0 or higher, an APS certificate on hand and IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 comfortably clear the shortlisting threshold for competitive English Master’s tracks.

University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
FAU does not publish an institution-wide placement rate or median salary. Career outcomes are best measured against the German STEM market median and FAU’s long-standing industry relationships.
- Employment context: German market median starting salary for STEM Master’s graduates sits at €55,000 to €60,000 per year (₹60 to ₹65 Lakh, market median).
- Long-standing industry partners: Siemens (headquartered in Erlangen), Audi (Ingolstadt, one hour away), adidas (Herzogenaurach) and Schaeffler feed FAU’s engineering pipeline through joint labs and thesis placements.
- Research placements: Fraunhofer IIS, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg place FAU Master’s students into paid thesis roles at €1,200 to €1,800 per month.
- Career support: FAU’s Career Service runs the annual Contact firms fair with over 100 recruiters, plus a dedicated International Alumni Network for cross-border job leads.
- Post-study route: Indian graduates use Germany’s 18-month job-search visa to secure a full-time role, then convert to the EU Blue Card once salary crosses €48,300 (2027 threshold, market indicative).
Insider note: Indian engineering graduates from FAU cluster into automotive electronics, medical device engineering and semiconductor roles around Nuremberg and Munich. English-only job hunts work in R&D and product management; conversational German at B1 level widens the pool by another 40%.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants weighing FAU typically compare it against other top German technical universities. The peer set below reflects institutions with similar tuition-free public status and strong engineering emphasis.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 (band) | Annual Tuition | City / State | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Erlangen-Nuremberg | #218 | €152 semester contribution (₹16,602) | Erlangen, Bavaria | Chemical and electrical engineering top 10 globally; Siemens research corridor |
| Technical University of Munich | Top 25 | Semester contribution only, no tuition | Munich, Bavaria | Germany’s top-ranked technical university; broadest research footprint (approximate rank band) |
| RWTH Aachen University | Top 100 | Semester contribution only, no tuition | Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia | Largest engineering faculty in Germany; automotive and mechanical focus (approximate rank band) |
| Karlsruhe Institute of Technology | Top 125 | Semester contribution only, no tuition | Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg | Applied research at Helmholtz Association; strong AI and computer science (approximate rank band) |
| Technical University of Berlin | Top 200 | Semester contribution only, no tuition | Berlin | Capital-city location; startup ecosystem access (approximate rank band) |
FAU stands out from this peer set on two counts: subject-level top-10 QS positions in four engineering disciplines, and a physical corridor of blue-chip employers within 30 minutes of campus. Cost of living in Erlangen is roughly 30% below Munich and 20% below Berlin, extending the reach of an Indian education loan.
Indian applicants who prioritise absolute QS rank often pick TU Munich; those who prioritise engineering subject depth combined with lower living costs tend to settle on FAU. The trade-off is real but the delta in employability is small at the Master’s level.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg fits an Indian STEM graduate who wants a tuition-free European Master’s, engineering subject depth in the world top 10 and a total two-year investment of around ₹27 Lakh covered mostly by living costs. Graduates leave with an 18-month job-search visa, direct recruiter pipelines into Siemens and Audi, and a market median starting salary near ₹60 Lakh.
The Indian-specific tailwinds are strong. Bavaria’s tuition policy, an Indian student community above 400 across programmes and low crime rankings in Erlangen make settlement smoother than in bigger German cities. Post-study conversion to the EU Blue Card is a proven route for Indian FAU graduates in automotive electronics, semiconductors and medical devices, and there are viable neighbouring options in MBA in Germany if a career pivot to management follows.
FAU is not the pick for an applicant chasing pure global QS rank at all costs or set on a big-city lifestyle. Those students often prefer TU Munich or a UK Russell Group. Also less suited are Indian humanities Bachelor’s applicants, since FAU’s undergraduate programmes are largely in German. For Bachelor’s abroad see the BTech in Germany overview.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg FAQs
Ques. Are University of Erlangen-Nuremberg degree programmes tuition-free for Indian students?
Ans. Yes. FAU is a Bavarian public university and does not charge tuition fees to Indian students at either Bachelor’s or Master’s level. Every enrolled student pays only a semester contribution of around €76 (₹8,301) that covers regional transport passes and student services. This applies to English-taught and German-taught programmes alike, and the tuition-free policy is set by the Free State of Bavaria rather than the university itself.
Ques. What English test scores does FAU accept from Indian applicants?
Ans. FAU accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and equivalent B2 certificates. Programme-specific minimums generally sit at TOEFL iBT 85-90 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 depending on the department. Business and international programmes ask for the higher band while engineering programmes accept the lower. Indian applicants must verify the exact score for each Master’s programme on fau.eu before applying.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at FAU?
Ans. Yes. Indian students on a German student visa can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year while enrolled at FAU. Working outside these limits requires permission from the local Foreigners’ Office in Erlangen or Nuremberg. On-campus roles, research assistantships and internships tied to the degree do not count against the annual cap and are widely available at FAU’s engineering faculties.
Ques. Does FAU offer joint degree programmes with Indian universities?
Ans. FAU maintains research collaboration agreements with several IITs and IISc but does not currently run a formal dual-degree scheme with Indian universities at Master’s level. DAAD-funded exchange programmes allow FAU students to spend one semester at partner Indian institutions during Master’s studies. Indian applicants seeking a full FAU Master’s should apply through the standard admissions route rather than a joint pathway.
Ques. What blocked account amount does University of Erlangen-Nuremberg require for a visa?
Ans. Indian applicants must show approximately €11,904 (₹13 Lakh) in a German blocked account to receive a student visa for the 2027 intake. This figure is set by Germany’s federal foreign office at €992 per month for the first year and applies to every FAU applicant. Popular blocked account providers include Fintiba, Expatrio and Deutsche Bank. The exact amount is revised each January.
Ques. How does FAU handle Winter Semester applications for Indian students?
Ans. Indian applicants apply through FAU’s central campo.fau.de portal after registering a student account. The workflow requires the APS certificate from New Delhi, academic transcripts, English test scores, statement of purpose and a passport copy. Most Master’s programmes open the Winter application window in April and close between May 31 and July 15. Uni-assist pre-check is required for several programmes, adding 4-6 weeks to processing time.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans recognised by University of Erlangen-Nuremberg?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda sanction education loans for FAU degrees, since the university sits on their approved list of foreign institutions. Since tuition at FAU is nil, most Indian applicants borrow only for living expenses and the blocked account deposit. Loan amounts typically range from ₹15 Lakh to ₹25 Lakh for a two-year Master’s programme.
Ques. What accommodation options does FAU offer first-year international students?
Ans. FAU’s Studentenwerk Erlangen-Nuremberg manages roughly 4,300 subsidised dormitory rooms across Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth, priced between €230 and €430 per month. First-year international students receive priority allocation but must apply separately from the degree application. Private shared apartments cost €400 to €600 per month in Erlangen. FAU’s International Office also runs a Buddy Programme that helps arriving Indian students find short-term housing during the first two weeks.
