Technical University of Munich (TUM) MSc Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is a 2-year, 4-semester English-taught program based at the Garching campus. TUM ranks #22 globally (QS World University Rankings 2026) and #26 worldwide in Computer Science & Information Systems (QS Subject Rankings 2026). The CSE program uniquely bridges applied mathematics, computer science and engineering applications — and gives top students access to the elite Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering (BGCE).

Total cost for Indian students runs approximately ₹57–65 lakhs over 2 years (tuition + living). Germany's post-study work visa allows 18 months to find a job after graduation. The program starts every Winter Semester (October) only.

Admission Status (IST): Applications for Winter Semester 2026/27 are open from February 1, 2026 to May 31, 2026 (11:59 PM IST). The application portal is TUMonline. Apply early — TUM reviews on a rolling basis and competitive applicants are admitted before the deadline closes.

Why Study MSc CSE at TU Munich?

  • Elite access: Top CSE students can join the BGCE honors program — one of Germany's most prestigious graduate engineering networks.
  • Strong ROI: Average starting salary for TUM CS graduates is €55,000–€65,000/year (~₹60–71 lakhs) in Germany; higher in the EU tech sector.
  • Work rights: International students can work up to 140 full days (20 hrs/week) per year. Minimum wage in Germany is €12.82/hour (~₹1,397/hr).
  • Post-study visa: Germany offers an 18-month job-seeker visa after graduation — one of the most generous in Europe.
  • Fee waivers available: Merit-based and need-based tuition waivers are available for Indian students — potentially saving ₹26+ lakhs over 2 years.

TUM MSc CSE: Is It Worth It for Indian Students?

TUM's CSE program combines world-class research infrastructure, a globally recognized degree and access to Germany's engineering industry. At ₹50–62 lakhs total investment (without waiver), it is significantly cheaper than comparable programs in the US or UK. With a tuition waiver, total cost drops to approximately ₹24–36 lakhs — making it exceptional value. The 18-month post-study work visa and Germany's growing tech sector make this a strong long-term career move.

FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students get a tuition fee waiver for TUM MSc CSE, and what is the process?

Ans. Yes. TUM offers both merit-based and need-based tuition waivers for non-EU Master's students. For the merit waiver, you need a ranking certificate from your undergraduate university showing your percentile within your cohort. Ans. No, IELTS is not mandatory if your Bachelor's degree was taught at least 50% in English. You can submit your transcript or degree certificate as proof of English proficiency. Alternatively, a graded English-language Bachelor's thesis is also accepted for CSE at TUM's School of CIT. If your degree was not in English, you need IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 88 minimum.

Ques. What is the minimum CGPA required for TUM MSc CSE admission from India, and is GRE needed?

Ans. TUM does not publish a fixed minimum CGPA cutoff. However, based on admitted student profiles on Reddit and TUMonline, a CGPA of 7.5/10 or above is considered competitive. GRE is not required for TUM CSE. The aptitude assessment evaluates your Bachelor's grades, Statement of Purpose, Curricular Analysis and CV using a point-based system — strong math and CS coursework significantly improves your score.
