Public policy in Hesse keeps tuition at zero for both EU and non-EU students, and the semester contribution covers the state-wide Deutschlandticket for public transport. DAAD funding, in-house merit bursaries and departmental scholarships offset most living costs for high-scoring Indian applicants. The 18-month post-study job-seeker visa lets graduates convert to a full EU Blue Card once employed.

Technical University of Darmstadt Admission 2027
TU Darmstadt runs a primary Winter intake starting October and a limited Summer intake starting April. Indian applicants overwhelmingly target the Winter cycle because more programmes accept new starts.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Summer 2027 application deadline (selected masters) | Expected 15 January 2027 (based on prior cycle) | Only some masters accept Summer starts. Verify per-course page. |
| Winter 2027/28 application opens | Expected April 2027 | Uni-assist portal opens for international applicants. |
| Winter 2027/28 application deadline | Expected 15 July 2027 | Firm deadline for non-EU applicants including Indians. |
| APS certification (India) | Start 8 to 12 weeks before deadline | Mandatory for all Indian degree holders before uni-assist submission. |
| Programme start | October 2027 (Winter) / April 2027 (Summer) | Orientation runs 2 weeks before lectures. |
Planning note: Book your APS interview in Delhi or Bangalore at least 3 months before the July deadline. Certificates take 4 to 6 weeks to issue and uni-assist will not process without one.

Technical University of Darmstadt Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian students apply through uni-assist and must clear the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) before submission.
- PG academic: 4-year bachelors with 65% to 70% or CGPA 6.5 to 7.0/10 in a relevant discipline (recommended for CS, EE and IT Security).
- English test (English-taught masters): IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 88 (0-120 legacy scale). Verify at tu-darmstadt.de.
- German test (German-taught programmes): DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4 in all sections, or Goethe C1.
- APS certificate: Mandatory verification of Indian bachelors and Class 12 records through the German embassy in New Delhi.
UG applications from India are limited because most bachelors run in German and require a Feststellungsprüfung route via a Studienkolleg when the Indian Class 12 is not directly recognised.
Key insight: IELTS 6.5 is the working floor at TU Darmstadt but CS and IT Security committees favour 7.0 and above. Retake if any band drops below 6.0 because sub-band cutoffs apply.
Technical University of Darmstadt Acceptance Rate 2027
TU Darmstadt does not publish a single institution-wide acceptance rate. Programme-level admissions data suggest an overall rate of 20% to 35% (estimated), with MS Computer Science and MS IT Security running significantly tighter than the average.
Engineering masters in German are more accessible than English-taught CS tracks because the applicant pool is smaller. Bachelor’s programmes are typically open-admission for applicants who clear the language and Feststellungsprüfung route.
Reality check: Indian applicants with a 7.5 CGPA and IELTS 7.0 sit in the middle of the CS pool. Standout coursework, GitHub projects or a published paper move you above the median.

Technical University of Darmstadt vs Peer Universities
Compared against fellow TU9 members and other public research universities Indian students shortlist alongside TU Darmstadt, the university sits mid-pack on QS but leads on Computer Science subject rank.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual Semester Contribution (EUR/INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical University of Darmstadt | #250 | #200 (global) | EUR 765/year (INR 0.71 lakh) | Top-3 German university for Computer Science by THE subject rank |
| RWTH Aachen University | #99 | NA | EUR 620/year (INR 0.58 lakh) | Largest engineering intake in Germany, especially mechanical |
| Technical University of Munich | #22 | NA | EUR 170/year (INR 0.16 lakh) | Germany’s top-ranked TU; competitive CS masters |
| KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) | #93 | NA | EUR 340/year (INR 0.32 lakh) | Strong in physics, energy and computer science |
| University of Stuttgart | #298 | NA | EUR 3,000/year (INR 2.79 lakh) | Baden-Wurttemberg charges EUR 1,500/semester tuition for non-EU |
TU Darmstadt wins on subject depth in Computer Science and IT Security while keeping public-university costs. Applicants deciding between TU Darmstadt and Stuttgart save EUR 3,000/year on tuition alone by picking Hesse over Baden-Wurttemberg.
Technical University of Darmstadt fits STEM applicants targeting German-employer careers on a shoestring: the total 2-year investment of INR 22 to 24 lakh recovers inside the first post-study year at a median INR 55 lakh salary, backed by the study in Germany post-study residence permit that runs 18 months.
It is not the right pick if you want an English-medium bachelor’s, need guaranteed housing, or prefer a compact campus city with everything walkable. Consider RWTH Aachen University for a stronger unified engineering campus with similar tuition-free economics.
Technical University of Darmstadt FAQs
Ques. Does Technical University of Darmstadt offer English-taught bachelor’s degrees for Indians?
Ans. No. Almost every bachelor’s programme at Technical University of Darmstadt is taught in German and requires DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4 or Goethe C1 at admission. Indian Class 12 alone is usually not equivalent, so applicants must first clear a Feststellungsprüfung through a recognised Studienkolleg. English-medium options exist mostly at master’s level.
Ques. How many hours can Indian students work part-time at TU Darmstadt?
Ans. German law allows non-EU students to work 140 full days or 280 half days per year, roughly 20 hours a week during semester and full-time during breaks. On-campus HiWi (student assistant) jobs at TU Darmstadt pay EUR 12 to 14 per hour (INR 1,116 to 1,302) and count against this limit only when they exceed the working-hour threshold.
Ques. Can Indian applicants waive IELTS at Technical University of Darmstadt?
Ans. Yes, in limited cases. Applicants whose bachelor’s was taught entirely in English can request a waiver by submitting an official medium-of-instruction letter. Some German-taught masters do not require English at all. English-taught CS and IT Security masters rarely waive IELTS below the standard 6.5 overall floor.
Ques. Is the APS certificate mandatory for Indian students at TU Darmstadt?
Ans. Yes. Every Indian applicant must obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi before uni-assist processes their application. The check verifies authenticity of Class 12, bachelors and any prior degrees. Processing takes 4 to 6 weeks and includes an interview for masters applicants.
Ques. What blocked account balance do Indian students need for a TU Darmstadt visa?
Ans. The German embassy currently expects Indian students to fund a Sperrkonto (blocked account) of EUR 11,904 (INR 11.07 lakh) for one year, released monthly at EUR 992. This is separate from the semester contribution and tuition. Providers include Expatrio, Fintiba and Coracle, all accepted for German student visa applications.
Ques. Does TU Darmstadt need GRE scores for the MS Computer Science program?
Ans. No. GRE is neither required nor evaluated for MS Computer Science, MS IT Security or MS Distributed Software Systems at Technical University of Darmstadt. Selection is based on bachelor’s grades, subject match, statement of purpose and English proficiency. Strong GitHub projects or publications carry more weight than GRE at German technical universities.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for TU Darmstadt admits?
Ans. SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred and Auxilo all sanction loans for admits to Technical University of Darmstadt because it clears their public-university and QS top-300 filters. Typical sanction sizes cover the blocked account, semester contribution, flights and 12 months of living costs, ranging from INR 15 to 30 lakh.
Ques. Can Indian students bring dependants on a TU Darmstadt student visa?
Ans. Yes, but with proof of extra funds. Spouses need a separate dependant visa with proof of A1 German, additional blocked-account balance of roughly EUR 800 per month, and family health insurance. Children are exempt from the language test. Spouses on this visa may work full-time in Germany without restriction once the residence permit is issued.
