Technical University Darmstadt is a public research university located in Darmstadt, Germany, founded in 1877. The university offers a wide range of courses at both bachelor’s and master’s levels, with a strong focus on research and innovation. Some of the popular Indian courses are MS Computer Science, MS IT Security, and BS Computer Science

German public universities, including TU Darmstadt, do not charge tuition fees. Instead, students are required to pay a semester contribution of around €382.68 (₹42,307). This fee covers administrative costs, student services, student union fees, and a public transport ticket (Deutschland Semester Ticket).

The university offers two intakes: Winter (primary intake) and Summer. The Winter semester begins in October and is the main intake with the highest number of available programs, while the Summer semester begins in April with limited course options.

For undergraduate admission, TU Darmstadt does not specify a fixed Class 12 percentage for Indian students. Admission is based on eligibility within the German education system. Since Germany follows a 13-year education system and India follows a 12-year system, Indian students are generally required to either complete one year of a recognised undergraduate program in India or attend a Studienkolleg (foundation year) in Germany before applying

For master’s programs, applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with at least 180 credits in a related field. Admission is based on subject-specific requirements, meaning the previous degree must match the academic content of the chosen program.

TU Darmstadt does not provide its own student dormitories, and students must arrange accommodation independently, often through external student housing providers. The average cost of accommodation ranges from approximately €380 - 550 (₹42,005 - 60,797 Lakhs) per month. According to the university, the estimated cost of living is around €900 - 1,000 (₹99,486 - 1.10 Lakhs) per month, depending on lifestyle and housing choices.

Note: €1 = ₹110.54 is the exchange rate used for all currency conversions in this article, as of April 27, 2026.

After completing either of these, students become eligible to apply for a bachelor’s degree in Germany.

Studienkolleg (Preparatory Course): A 1-year college that prepares students for undergraduate studies.
Aufnahmeprüfung (Entrance Exam): A test you must pass to get into a Studienkolleg.
Feststellungsprüfung (Final Assessment Exam - FSP): The final exam is taken at the end of the Studienkolleg.

FAQs

Ques. What is a blocked account?

Ans. A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special bank account required for a German student visa, where you deposit a fixed amount of money in advance. You cannot withdraw the full amount at once; instead, a limited amount (approx. €992 (₹1.09 Lakhs)) is released to you each month for your living expenses.

Ques. How can Indian students open a blocked account for a German student visa?

Ans. Indian students can open a blocked account online through approved providers like Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle. They need to fill out an application, upload documents, and transfer the required amount (€11,904 (₹13.16 Lakhs)). Indian banks do not offer blocked accounts, so students must use German or Germany-approved providers.

Ques. What is a semester contribution fee, and how is it different from tuition fees?

Ans. A semester contribution fee is a small amount that students pay for services like transport, student support, and administration. Unlike tuition fees, it does not cover teaching costs, as public universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees.

  • There are two campuses in total. We have a library that can be used by the public. We also have a sports complex next to our other campus, which includes a running track, football field, swimming pool, mini-trek setup, etc.
  • German universities are very conservative and hence you will not find any sort of fest or any event happening on the campus.
