Technical University Berlin Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Technical University Berlin requirements vary by programme, but Indian applicants must clear a common bachelor’s grade threshold plus language and credential verification checks.
Postgraduate Requirements at Technical University Berlin
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 (recommended); competitive programmes may expect 75% or CGPA 8.0/10. Check the differences between CGPA and GPA.
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87, PTE Academic 65, or Cambridge B2 First (min. B); C1-level programmes require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95, or PTE 76
- Credential verification: uni-assist VPD (preliminary review documentation) mandatory before online submission; certificate is valid one semester across all German universities
- APS certificate: Akademische Prüfstelle certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi is mandatory for Indian applicants
Undergraduate Requirements at Technical University Berlin
- Academic: Class 12 with 75% (recommended) plus one full year at a recognised Indian university, or Studienkolleg completion after Class 12
- German proficiency: DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, or Goethe-Zertifikat C2 required for German-taught bachelor’s programmes
- APS certificate: Mandatory for Indian UG applicants alongside the uni-assist VPD
Key insight: TU Berlin waives the English test if your Indian bachelor’s was fully English-medium, but you must submit an explicit medium-of-instruction letter from the issuing university.
Technical University Berlin Acceptance Rate 2027
Technical University Berlin does not publish an institution-wide acceptance rate. Independent estimates place programme-level admission at 25% to 40% (estimated) for restricted master’s courses. Unrestricted programmes admit all qualifying applicants who meet the grade threshold and clear the VPD review. The estimated band reflects application-to-seat ratios rather than an official published metric.
Selectivity swings sharply by discipline. MS Space Engineering, MS Computer Science, and MS Architecture see the tightest ratios (below 25%). Less-competitive tracks admit over 60% of qualifying applicants.
Applicants with a bachelor’s CGPA above 8.0/10, a strong statement of purpose, and a completed uni-assist VPD improve their odds considerably.
Reality check: With no headline rate published, shortlist programmes matching your bachelor’s specialisation and target both restricted and unrestricted options together.
Technical University Berlin Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027
The full annual cost for an Indian student at TU Berlin sits between € 9,120 and € 13,921 per year. That converts to ₹ 10.05 to 15.35 lakh, covering around €800 annual semester contribution and Berlin’s living costs.
Technical University Berlin Semester Contribution 2027
Every degree at TU Berlin (bachelor’s, master’s, or MBA) pays the same € 399 semester contribution (₹ 43,934). As per TU Berlin’s official fee schedule, this covers student services, enrolment, and the AB-Ticket Berlin (a public transport pass valid across the city). The Energy Management MBA adds a tuition component of € 20,199 (₹ 22.24 lakh) across the 15-month programme.
| Programme Level | Semester Contribution (€) | Annual Cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|

Technical University Berlin vs Peer Universities
Peer comparison groups TU Berlin against Germany’s top technical and comprehensive universities. IIT Bombay serves as an Indian benchmark. QS 2027 ranks and annual programme cost anchor the comparison.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical University Berlin | #158 | #115 out of 824 | Tuition-free with strong Berlin industry ties |
| Technical University of Munich | #22 | NA | Germany’s top-ranked, Bavaria non-EU tuition applies |
| LMU Munich | #61 | NA | Broadest comprehensive research base in Germany |
| RWTH Aachen | #104 | NA | Engineering-first, industry co-op leader |
| IIT Bombay | #134 | NA | Indian benchmark, English-medium delivery |
TU Berlin lands between IIT Bombay and RWTH Aachen on QS 2027. Its fees run a fraction of Bavaria’s charges at TUM and LMU. Berlin’s urban tech ecosystem and English-medium master’s tracks make it a lower-cost alternative to Munich.
Technical University Berlin fits Indian students seeking a top German engineering master’s without Bavaria’s non-EU tuition burden. The full degree investment sits at € 15,000 (₹ 16.53 lakh) against a market median starting salary of € 55,000. Germany’s post-study work permit lets graduates target Berlin’s tech employers directly.
Applicants prioritising English-medium PG breadth or global brand recognition may lean toward Technical University of Munich or RWTH Aachen instead. Those unwilling to learn German find non-multinational employment narrower. An English-medium master’s in the Netherlands or Ireland could be a stronger fit.
Technical University Berlin FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee for Technical University Berlin master’s programmes?
Ans. Applications to TU Berlin master’s programmes carry no direct fee from the university. Applicants pay the uni-assist VPD (preliminary review documentation) fee, which stands at € 75 for the first application (₹ 8,270) plus € 30 for each additional application in the same semester. The VPD certificate is valid for one semester across all German universities under the uni-assist umbrella.
Ques. How many hours per week can Indian students work at TU Berlin?
Ans. Indian students on a German student visa can work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year, which averages 20 hours per week during term-time. Semester-break work does not count against this cap. Part-time roles at Berlin startups, university research assistantships (HiWi jobs paying € 12 to 15 per hour), and tutoring are common paths. Students must inform the immigration office if they exceed limits.
Ques. Does Technical University Berlin require a GRE for master’s applications?
Ans. GRE and GMAT scores are not universally required at Technical University Berlin. Most MS programmes (Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Biotechnology) admit on the bachelor’s grade and subject fit alone. Selected competitive programmes such as MS Space Engineering and the Energy Management MBA recommend a strong GRE quant score (typically 160+). Applicants should check the individual programme’s admission regulations page for the current requirement.
Ques. Can Indian students take an English-taught bachelor’s at TU Berlin?
Ans. TU Berlin offers almost no fully English-taught bachelor’s programmes. Undergraduate degrees run in German across engineering, natural sciences, and humanities. Indian applicants without German at C1 level (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4) cannot enter directly at UG level. Common pathways include first completing a Studienkolleg preparatory year in Germany, transferring after one year at an Indian university, or targeting an English-medium bachelor’s at private German universities.
Ques. What blocked account does Germany’s student visa need for TU Berlin?
Ans. Indian applicants applying for a German student visa in 2027 need a blocked account with € 11,904 (₹ 13.13 lakh) covering one year of living costs at € 992 per month. The Federal Foreign Office revises this figure each January. Providers include Expatrio, Fintiba, and Coracle. TU Berlin does not require proof at application, but the German Embassy in New Delhi mandates the blocked account before issuing a study visa.
Ques. How does Technical University Berlin verify Indian bachelor’s credentials?
Ans. Indian bachelor’s degrees must be verified through uni-assist, which issues a preliminary review documentation (VPD) with a converted German grade equivalent. Applicants upload their consolidated marksheet, degree certificate, transcript translations, and Class 10 and 12 documents. Processing typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Additionally, all Indian applicants require an APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) from the German Embassy in New Delhi, which certifies the authenticity of Indian academic documents.
Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for TU Berlin tuition and living costs?
Ans. Yes. TU Berlin master’s programmes appear on India’s public sector bank education loan lists, including SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Bank of Baroda’s Study Abroad Loan, and Canara Bank’s Vidya Turant. Loan amounts up to ₹ 1.5 crore are available at 9% to 11.5% floating rates. Because TU Berlin’s tuition is zero for most programmes, loans typically cover living expenses, blocked account funding, and the MBA tuition where applicable.
Ques. What English proficiency waivers does Technical University Berlin offer Indian applicants?
Ans. TU Berlin waives the English language test if the applicant holds a bachelor’s degree taught fully in English from a recognised university. Indian applicants must attach a medium-of-instruction (MOI) certificate from their bachelor’s university explicitly stating English delivery. Where the bachelor’s ran in mixed medium, a valid IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87, or PTE 65 score remains mandatory. Waiver decisions are programme-specific and not automatic.

Overview
I didn't go to any consultant. In fact, you don't really need any external help other than students who have studied previously. Connect with them on LinkedIn or other sites and ask them about their experience through the process. Initially, you need to present a strong SOP (Statement of purpose) highlighting your interest and passion for the field. You need one year of work/intern experience. Having 1-2 months short wouldn't make a difference. You need a decent IELTS score, above 6-6.5 should do. And then after the first round is cleared you will have an Interview round. This round is easy, they just ask more questions about your previous work and experience. And it follows up with what you expect from the course or what your future plans are.
Campus Life
I think the campus life at the university is great. They have a sports program providing sports activities at a very cheap rate. They have canteens for everyone that provided food at a very cheap rate even to vegan students. I have found many of my countrymen, Indians on campus and in class. However, the university is more diverse than my class. TU Berlin has opportunities for everyone in every field. As a student of TU Berlin, you can study a course at any university in Germany and get credits for that. The library is vast with several computers one can lend up to 50 books at a time. There are several societies one can be part of. One can join Facebook and WhatsApp groups and connect with more people. There are many conferences and seminars happening simultaneously where one can interact and meet people.
Overview
I prepared on my own. I referred to the documents required in which the major requirement was letter of motivation. I researched a bit on how to write the letter and then implemented my reason for choosing the course and university.
