What's New in RWTH-Aachen?

18 June 2026: QS World University Rankings 2027 has been released on 18 June 2026. RWTH Aachen University is ranked #104 among 1,500+ universities. Check out QS World University Rankings 2027 trend analysis

RWTH Aachen University is a public technical research university in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, ranked 104 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Founded in 1870 as a polytechnic, it is a member of the TU9 alliance of German technical universities and holds Germany of Excellence status through the Excellence Strategy funding programme. The institution enrols close to 47,000 students, with roughly 21 percent international, making it one of Germany’s largest engineering-led universities and a core destination for Indian applicants targeting universities in Germany.

RWTH offers over 170 degree programmes across nine faculties covering engineering, natural sciences, medicine, business, and humanities. English-taught Master’s programmes number about 30 and cluster in Computer Science, Data Science, Automotive Engineering, and Management. Indian enrolment has grown steadily on the back of tuition-free public education, strong placement pipelines with German industry, and 18-month post-study work visa rights that make Aachen a magnet for engineering PGs shortlisting MS universities in Germany.

  • QS World Rank 2027: 104 (up from 105 in 2026)
  • Acceptance rate: around 10 percent (estimated figure; RWTH does not publish official rates)
  • Intakes: Winter Semester (October) and Summer Semester (April)
  • PG semester contribution: €329 (₹30,268) per semester; no tuition charged
  • Student body: 47,000 total, 21 percent international
  • Average MS starting salary: €55,000-€65,000 (₹50.6-₹59.8 lakh) per year

The QS trajectory has climbed from 147 in 2023 to 104 in 2027, a 43-position gain over five editions. Times Higher Education has held RWTH inside the world top 100 for the past four years, and QS ranks the university 22 for Materials Science and 25 for Mechanical Engineering in 2026-27, above IIT Bombay in Mechanical Engineering (QS 44). This positions RWTH as one of continental Europe’s strongest engineering schools rather than a general-purpose global name.

Public universities in North Rhine-Westphalia do not levy tuition on non-EU students, unlike Baden-Wuerttemberg, so Indian applicants pay only the semester contribution. Applicants planning arrival must factor in the German student visa route, blocked account funding, and monthly living costs in Aachen; a starting reference is the Germany student visa guide.

Exchange rate used: 1 EUR = ₹92 as of July 2026

Admission Status: Open. Summer Semester 2027 applications are open for international Master’s applicants, with a deadline of Expected September 1, 2026 (based on the prior cycle). Winter Semester 2027/28 Master’s applications for non-EU candidates are Expected to close March 1, 2027, mirroring the Winter Semester 2026/27 timeline. Bachelor applications for open-admission programmes follow a separate May-to-October window.

RWTH Aachen University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must satisfy academic thresholds, English proficiency, and mandatory credential verification through APS India.

RWTH Aachen University Master’s Requirements 2027

  • Recognised four-year Bachelor degree in a related discipline with minimum 70 percent aggregate, equivalent to German 2.5 GPA
  • English proof: TOEFL iBT 87 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS Academic 6.5, or Cambridge C1 Advanced; verify programme-specific minima at the RWTH admissions page
  • APS Certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre, New Delhi, submitted before the application deadline
  • GRE required for select programmes including MS Data Science and MS Software Systems Engineering; verify at each programme page

RWTH Aachen University Bachelor Requirements 2027

  • Class 12 with 90 percent plus JEE qualification; below this threshold Studienkolleg foundation is required
  • German language proficiency at B2 level (TestDaF 4x4, DSH-2, or Goethe B2)
  • APS Certificate mandatory

Key insight: RWTH does not accept the three-year Indian Bachelor for direct Master’s entry into most engineering programmes. Applicants with a three-year BSc need a completed Master’s in India or a bridging qualification before RWTH will consider the file.

RWTH Aachen University Acceptance Rate 2027

RWTH does not publish official acceptance rates, but competitive English-taught Master’s such as MS Data Science and MS Computer Science are widely estimated to admit around 10 percent of applicants.

Bachelor programmes with open admission (mainly German-taught) accept applicants who meet the academic threshold and language requirement, so effective acceptance is far higher than the Master’s figure. Selectivity at RWTH is programme-specific rather than institutional.

Reality check: A 70 percent Indian bachelor with strong internships and clear research fit will read stronger at RWTH than a 90 percent generalist. Aptitude assessments and project statements weigh more than GPA once the 2.5 GPA German equivalent is cleared.

RWTH Aachen University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

RWTH Aachen University sits in Aachen, a city of 250,000 in the German tri-border area with Belgium and the Netherlands, 70 km from Cologne. The campus divides into the older inner-city cluster and the newer Campus Melaten research park.

  • Location and transport: Aachen Hauptbahnhof is on the ICE route to Brussels and Paris; NRW-Ticket covers regional rail across North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Housing: Studentenwerk Aachen manages roughly 5,000 dorm rooms; international guarantee is limited so early application matters
  • Research facilities: 260 institutes, the Klinikum Aachen university hospital, and the Aachen supercomputing centre CLAIX-2023
  • Indian community: An active Indian Students Association organises Diwali and Holi events and runs an arrival buddy programme for new PGs

What Indian students say: Aachen is a small student-heavy city, so integration is fast and rent is manageable. The winter is long and grey compared to home, and mid-week social life is quieter than Berlin or Munich; weekend trips to Cologne, Amsterdam, or Brussels are the standard break.

RWTH Aachen University Scholarships 2027

[Source: QS, THE, US News, ARWU]

Key insight: The QS World 104 position clears the German Blue Card employer preference threshold and satisfies most Indian public-sector loan bank criteria that require a QS top-200 institution. RWTH is also above the informal top-150 line used by many US and UK PhD programmes for consideration of German MS graduates.

RWTH Aachen University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

RWTH graduates report some of the highest starting salaries among German technical universities, particularly in engineering and IT.

  • Employment within 6 months: Not officially disclosed; TU9 peer average sits above 90 percent
  • Median starting salary: €55,000-€65,000 (₹50.6-₹59.8 lakh) per year for engineering Master’s graduates (German market median for the discipline; not RWTH-specific)
  • Hiring sectors: Automotive (Aachen sits inside the German auto engineering corridor), heavy engineering, semiconductor, renewable energy, and consulting; RWTH does not publish an official recruiter list
  • Indian alumni signal: Alumni feed into engineering roles at Bosch, Siemens, and BMW Group; verified profiles are available on RWTH’s alumni portal
  • Career services: RWTH Career runs recruiter fairs twice a year and hosts the bonding industry contact fair on campus each spring

Insider note: The 18-month post-study job-seeker visa gives Indian graduates enough runway to enter German full-time roles. German A2 or higher is the informal cut-off for most engineering positions outside pure R&D; RWTH graduates without German often filter into consulting or global R&D subsidiaries.

RWTH Aachen University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers the TU9 alliance for direct German comparison, plus IIT Bombay as an Indian reference on QS and Mechanical Engineering strength.

IIT Bombay=134~2 percent (JEE Advanced)₹2-₹3 lakh per year₹18-₹22 lakh (India median for MS)Domestic option with global brand and no visa risk

RWTH stands out on the combination of tuition-free access for non-EU students, top-25 subject rankings in the core engineering families, and location inside the Aachen-Cologne-Duesseldorf industrial belt. Salary parity with TU Munich comes without the Bavarian tuition and higher rent.

Compared with IIT Bombay, RWTH costs roughly ₹22 lakh over two years including living, against ₹6-₹8 lakh for the IIT route; the RWTH graduate earns 3x the starting salary within Germany, and post-study residency pathways open which the IIT route does not carry.

RWTH Aachen University suits the Indian engineering graduate who wants tuition-free access to a top-100 global research university, an English-taught Master’s, and a direct on-ramp into German industry employment. The total two-year cost sits near €22,000 (₹20.24 lakh) against a starting salary of €55,000-€65,000 (₹50.6-₹59.8 lakh), a payback under one year of post-graduation income.

Indian-specific advantages include the 18-month post-study job-seeker visa, no Bavarian-style tuition, and an established Indian alumni network in Bosch, Siemens, and the automotive tier-one supply chain. The blocked account of €11,904 (₹10.95 lakh) is the primary upfront capital lock, on top of the modest semester contribution; the German student visa cost breakdown covers all pre-departure fees.

RWTH is not the right fit for applicants targeting management or humanities careers, those unwilling to invest in German A2 for post-graduation employment, or three-year Indian Bachelor holders without a bridging Master’s. TU Munich is the standard alternative for applicants who can absorb Bavarian tuition and want a stronger global brand.

Ans. The GRE is not required across the board at RWTH Aachen University. Selected programmes including MS Data Science and MS Software Systems Engineering require the GRE General Test, and MS Management and Engineering may request it for weaker undergraduate GPAs. Verify GRE requirements on the individual programme’s admission page before scheduling the test through Prometric.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at RWTH?

Ans. Indian students on a German student visa may work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year outside academic teaching periods. Typical student jobs pay €12-€15 per hour, and campus HiWi research assistant roles at RWTH pay around €13 per hour. Work above the annual cap requires Federal Employment Agency approval.

Ques. What is the application fee at RWTH Aachen University for Indian applicants?

Ans. RWTH Aachen University does not charge a direct application fee for most programmes. Applications routed via uni-assist carry a uni-assist processing fee of €75 (₹6,900) for the first application and €30 (₹2,760) for each additional. The APS Certificate from APS India carries a separate fee of ₹18,000 payable to APS.

Ques. Does RWTH Aachen University require an entrance interview?

Ans. Most RWTH Master’s programmes do not require a live interview. Selected programmes such as MS Automotive Engineering and MS Management and Engineering may invite shortlisted applicants to a 20-30 minute online interview covering academic background and motivation. Ans. Indian students applying for the German student visa to attend RWTH Aachen University must show €11,904 (₹10.95 lakh) in a blocked account with an approved provider such as Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank. The amount unlocks in monthly instalments of €992 (₹91,264) after arrival in Germany. This is set by the German Foreign Office and reviewed annually.

Ques. Is uni-assist mandatory for RWTH Aachen University applications?

Ans. Uni-assist is required for most Bachelor programmes and for selected Master’s at RWTH Aachen University to pre-check foreign qualifications. Many English-taught Master’s programmes now accept direct applications through the RWTHonline portal, bypassing uni-assist entirely. Check the programme page before paying uni-assist fees, since the routing changes by faculty.

Ques. Which RWTH Aachen University programmes offer conditional admission?

Ans. RWTH Aachen University issues conditional admission when the Bachelor degree is not yet complete at the application deadline, or when a required subject module is missing but can be completed in the first two semesters. The offer specifies which credits or which final transcript must be submitted by matriculation. Applicants missing German or English proof cannot receive a conditional; language proof is a hard prerequisite.

Campus Life

10

  • There are a lot of international students in Aachen and a lot of clubs. There's one campus, and there are libraries, with 1 big one in the city centre. There are multiple sports centres, with a big one in the north.
  • Almost every week there are events, and there is the Carnival in November and February in the region. There is also a big Indian club called INCA. As for extracurriculars, one can do almost any activity with other students as well in the city, which is a cultural landmark.

Fees

  • There is no tuition fee, outside of a "semester fee" of 300 euros, which includes the semester ticket that allows free transport across Germany. Then, there are living expenses, which can range from 800-900 in total, but the hostel fees can range from 250-400, and allow you to stay at a cheaper place. • As far as I know, RWTH university has a lot of institutes and a lot of buildings in the entire city of Aachen. University itself has different libraries, a sports center, a gym, a medical college, student dorms, canteens and a lot more. Each institute has different activities and each community conducts different events here, like summer parties. Indian students also conduct some activities here during the festival time.

Fees

  • Currently I am doing free education here at RWTH Aachen, but there is a semester contribution that needs to be paid every semester between 290 and 320 euros approximately. That covers the semester ticket, which helps to travel all of Germany for free and also covers a state in the Netherlands called south limburg. Can travel by bus, train, tram and other public transport except express trains like ICE.

Fees

  • 27000 Euro, and and I got a 3000 euro scholarship. fees is charges semester-wise; monthly expenses depend on the city. if you are living in munich than 1000 euro is the minimum (including everything) if you don't get the student dormitory, but if you get that, then 700 euro (including everything). In Aachen, it's 500-600 Euro if you get the private dormitory and 400-500 euro if you get the student dormitory.

It also includes a social contribution fee but the tuition fee component is zero.

  • The campus is lively and has a lot of clubs based on your interests. There will be some or the other event going on since this is the largest technical university in Germany. Keep in mind that you need to move out of the city to find a job opportunity since this is a student city with this university spread all over Aachen.
  • You have a sports center and all the other facilities that a typical university has but it'll be crowded. You'll have to attend meet-and-greet events, networking events with beer and snacks, and events at a startup ecosystem in Aachen called Collective Incubator. You'll have everything but it depends on how and how much you use those facilities.

  • It's hard to state the exact number of campuses, but it should be around 7-8.
  • In terms of facilities, there's a university library, sports centre, and language centre, but there aren't any medical services.
  • So, there are some events and activities that are always happening at the technical university, but I can't comment on that since I am not a part of the technical university.
  • However, when it comes to the business school, we as well have a lot of happening events all round the year—we have summer party, a course party, meet & eat, christmas parties, etc.

Fees

  • As far as the fees is concerned, it can be broken down in two bits:
    • 1. The tuition fees, which are about 30.000 euros and are paid in equal installments per semester (3 semesters).
    • 2. The other thing is the semester contribution, which is around 350 euros, paid per semester and is basically a charge for your semester ticket- that allows you to travel through Germany without any ticket.
  • Talking about the monthly expenses, one can live in Aachen comfortably with around 1000 euros per month, inclusive of rent, food, insurance, outings, etc. ( This could sometime be more or less depending if you're taking any external paid classes, for instance language classes.)
