What Students Say
Likes
- Lecturers have built their reputation in the fields they teach in
- Access to good research to decide future interests
- Helpful online material
Dislikes
- My course is from RWTH International Academy, a private organisation inside RWTH Aachen University, but we still get the degree from the University. They charge high tution fees.
- Some lecturers tend to read from the presentations
Course Curriculum
- It was a mix of both, but leaning towards theoretical simply due to the nature of the course. Manufacturing cannot really be given a chance to be hands-on for non-trained professionals. A lot of focus on simulations and data-driven decisions. Would describe it as a lot of theory and memory-based, and about moderately difficult based on your course choices
- Mostly structured well, some elective choices don't make sense
- Two or three usually, starting at 8:30 can have breaks in between. Can have classes till 6PM, 1.5-hour periods
- Number of students depends on the degree and subjects and can be anywhere from 2 to 40 due to common subjects between degree courses and bachelor's too. About 6-10;
Admission Experience
-
I applied to the following universities:
- Northeastern University - Accept
- Boston University - Reject
- TU Delft - Reject
- Chalmers Institute of Technology - Accept
- Grades requirement was high for Delft
- Did not understand the Boston University rejection; maybe it was grades again. I had distinction.
- In 2021 I had applied Leicester and Leeds and gotten an admit from both of them
- There were no waitlisted colleges
- English-taught course
- Manufacturing was my interest
- Appeal of Germany for mechanical engineers
- Student city; majority of the population are students
- Indian community is big
- Admission Steps:
- Apply on the website. Get admit, then fulfill additional enrollment criteria like insurance etc
- Apply for Visa in the meantime and wait
- GRE minimum 305 (in 2022)
- IELTS 7
- No minimum GPA or German language requirement
- 1 year of professional experience
- Nothing really challenging about admission; very clear instructions
- 2022 Winter Intake; there is no summer intake for this course
- Factors:
- Fees
- Time period between results and semester start
- Documents availability
- Admission deadline usually March 1 or February 28
- First round results usually April, and then after a deadline for acceptance, next round possibly in June to give enough time for Visa applications and approvals
Faculty
- There's a lecture and exercise concept. Lectures are just theory; exercises are numerical and concept-based questions.
- Lectures are taught by doctorates and extremely qualified individuals; interaction with them is fairly less due to their busy schedules.
- Exercise is taught by their PhD students and research associates. A rapport can be built with them to understand better.
- Course content is definitely not enough, but it can never be. But it comes close to teaching all the fundamentals required to apply and get a job.
- Some departments offer part-time research positions for students and can be beneficial.
Campus Life
- Whole city has buildings distributed from the University, no specific campus. That said, we have a big, unified campus too called Campus Melaten. Houses most of the research institutions.
- Library, Gym, sports, dance, music, language – everything is available for a price.
- No concept of "Fests", but throughout the year there are some events. Department parties are career events called Bonding.
Part Time Jobs
- Depends on your experience and the department; harder for automotive courses, easier for simulation and others. It's a student assistant role, usually doing work for someone who's doing a PhD or who has finished a PhD and needs some additional work done.
- Can be from €400 to €1000 a month based on workload.
- No other on-campus jobs.
- 19 hours maximum per week.
- Depends on previous experience and your skills. They value previous experience a lot.
- A student with a bachelor's degree earns €16 an hour for on-campus jobs and more off-campus. Usually easier outside in logistics. For research positions, the university puts up ads and we can email the person in charge with a cv and cover letter and express our interest. Sometimes cold emails to researchers also work. Interviews are simple; they describe the tasks and then see if we actually fit.
Placement
- The economy is considered weak currently so these stats aren't helpful.
- €40-50k without tax.
- LinkedIn, job fairs, departmental phd positions if available.
- No experiences so far; language requirement is unofficial but better to learn to get a fighting chance.
- All major German companies hire. Most of them prefer a doctorate but some hire master's graduates as well.
Accommodation
- Applications like WG-Gesucht, ImmoScout24, whatsapp groups, known contacts
- 400 in 2022; now I would say 500. Rarely for 3-sharing apartments do you end up in the €350-400€ range. Only rent, water and heating. Electricity and Internet usually our responsibility
- Extremely high demand due to high intake; it's better if you know the language
- No specific regions for Indians, distributed throughout the city
- Have patience; do not rush into decisions that might be scams. find other Indians to possibly scout the area if possible
Exams
- GRE, IELTS
- For my course:
- SOP
- 2×LORs
- Experience certificate from an employer for 6 months during application and 1 year during enrollment
- Transcript of Grades
- Provisional Degree certificate now and degree certificate maybe later
- Curriculum Vitae
- Other certificates of awards, scholarships, etc. from your first degree
- No interview for this course
Fees
- Courses directly from the RWTH Aachen University: Per semester, €300-320€ fees for travel and social benefits
- Courses from the International Academy: Per semester 4500-5500€ + 300-320€ for tuition
- Semester-wise payment-
- For Winter Semesters, social fee before September, tuition fees I think June
- For Summer Semesters, social fee before April, tuition fees, I think, are in January.
- Around €950 basic, + €150 for additional luxury needs
- Rent: 400-550
- Insurance: 150
- Sustenance: 200
- Transportation is included with a "Semester Ticket" within Germany and some places in neighbouring countries. We paid for it with the Travel and Social fees
Scholarship
- Some of them may be in DAAD.
- Class toppers and women in STEM also, I think.
- There are awards for the top 10 or 20% of the class but I am not sure about any scholarships.
- Early applicants get some discount from their tuition fees, but apart from that I'm not really sure.
- There are scholarships in Germany, which are not course-specific but field specific so that can be checked.
