- There is bit of issue with transparency of course structure ans student need to plan themselves
- Accomodation is not handled by university which leads to issue in identifying places to stay
- There are no direct placement offers and one needs to search for jobs on their own
Course Curriculum
- The courses are moderately difficult and the exams are difficult as well. The subjects that have seminars are relatively easier to finish. The classes are scheduled on a weekly basis and sometimes twice a week as well.
- The number of students can range from 20 to 1000 depending upon the course being offered, with subjects from the computer science stream having more attendance. In my course there are almost 6 Indian students in a total strength of 30 plus students.
Admission Experience
- I applied to most of the technical universities in germany and got selected in pretty much all of the universities where the cutoff or the eligibility criteria was met. I got offers from Saarland, TU Kaiserslautern and RWTH Aachen University. I got rejection from TUM and TU Berlin. I got rejected because the courses I applied to demanded higher scores in GRE.
- I chose RWTH aachen university because it is considered a prime university and ranks in the top 10 in Germany. Also, I had friends who were studying there who recommended it to me. The admission process was straightforward and one can apply directly by uploading the necessary documents, which include the GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scorecards along with university qualification documents and personal identification documents.
- I applied for the october or the winter intake and the admission process took almost 2 months from the time of applying. For the winter intake, one needs to apply during the Summer window which starts typically at the end of May and the beginning of June, while for the summer intake, the application deadline is January. There are only two intakes per year and the application deadline is almost 3 months before the start of the first semester.
Faculty
- There is a primary faculty assigned to each course supported by teaching assistants so every course has primarily 3 or 4 faculty members actively teaching every semester but the number of faculty members inbcluding PHD candidates goes much higher.
- Yes, many faculty members are actively looking for HiWi recruitment and offer good pay and flexible working hours to students, which benefits them both academically and financially.
Campus Life
- The university offers a multitude of events ranging from welcome fests, christmas parties, and food events to bonding events to get in touch with recruiters. Also there are summer exchange programs as well as excursion trips.
- Apart from that, there are department-specific events such as exhibitions and trade fairs. There are also vent offerings in sports and yoga throughout the semester so in total there are events happening every week.
Part Time Jobs
- Almost everyone has a student job in private as well as Hiwi positions. 6/10 students are placed in TA and RA jobs but not just within the university but also across different private companies involved in research activities. They also pay fairly and sometimes more depending on the job profile. Apart from that, there are delivery jobs and jobs available at restaurant chains like McD and KFC. One can work a max of 19 hours per week.
- Students typically earn from 13 to 16 euros during part-time work. Also, one is allowed to work for a maximum of 19 hours per week, and the wage differs for students having a bachelor's or a master's degree. The university offers a job search portal where one can search and apply for jobs. It's not very difficult to apply for university jobs but jobs outside might require language proficiency in german.
Placement
- There are various full-time job opportunities but one has to be patient in finding one. Also after finishing the course, a student gets a 2-yearjob seeker visa extension to search for jobs. Apart from that, there are various PHD positions available for students.
- Major companies include Mercedes, Celonis, SAP and other automobile companies. There are jobs posted on linkedin and Stepstone which offer a plethora of job listings.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation using the local room-finding app called WG gesucht. There are accommodations provided in different student complexes, but the application process is not handled by University and there is a waiting list so there is no guarantee of assured rooms.
- One needs to privately look for apartments in shared spaces as well. I got a studio apartment for myself costing about 350 euros, with electricity separate. The campus is spread out with great transport connectivity, and also the town is very small so everything is 30 minutes away at max.
Exams
- One needs to have the scorecard from the GRE and either TOEFL or IELTs. They must also provide a letter of motivation, transcripts of a bachelor's degree, and also a statement of purpose. Also, they need a letter of recommendation from previous university professors. there are no separate interview process but the SOPs have high significance in increasing the chances of acceptance. Also, in some instances the university might ask to take up additional prerequisite courses.
Fees
- The university offers courses for 300 euros per semester, which includes free travel passes in the North Rhine region. For a student the monthly estimate comes to about 1000 euros for a comfortable stay and can be squeezed if limited resources are consumed. Also with a hiwi job, one can also save to travel. It also includes a social contribution fee but the tuition fee component is zero.
Scholarship
- There are various scholarships provided every year like DAAD and Porsche but they are given based on academic achievements and social contributions. A friend of mine received the porsche scholarship amounting to 3000 Euros.
- The number of students receiving the scholarship is very limited, amounting to less than 1 percent. Some students receive financial assistance of up to 400 euros per month as well.
