CUSB Ph.D. (Pharmacy) FAQs
Ques. Is GPAT mandatory for Ph.D. in Pharmacy at CUSB, even if I have UGC-NET?
Ans. Yes, GPAT is specifically mandatory for Ph.D. in Pharmacy at CUSB, as explicitly stated in the official admission notification. Even if you hold a valid UGC-NET score, you must also have a valid GPAT scorecard to be eligible to apply. This is a unique requirement for the Pharmacy department at CUSB and is in line with PCI regulations for pharmacy research programmes. Candidates who have only UGC-NET without GPAT will not be considered eligible.
Ques. What is the difference between JRF, Category 2, and Category 3 admission at CUSB Ph.D.?
Ans. CUSB follows the UGC public notice of March 2024 for Ph.D. admissions. Category 1 (JRF) candidates qualify for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, and Ph.D. admission; they are selected based on interview alone with 100% weightage. Category 2 candidates qualify for Assistant Professor and Ph.D. admission but not JRF; they are selected on 70% test score + 30% interview. Category 3 candidates qualify only for Ph.D. admission; they are also selected on 70% test score + 30% interview. JRF holders receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 37,000, while Category 2 and 3 scholars must arrange their own funding unless they secure a project fellowship.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. in Pharmacy at CUSB, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. As per the 2026-27 notification, CUSB offered 17 seats for Ph.D. in Pharmacy (UR: 6, OBC: 4, SC: 4, ST: 1, EWS: 2, plus 1 PWD horizontal reservation). Given that CUSB is a centrally funded university with strong research infrastructure and the mandatory GPAT requirement filters the applicant pool significantly, the competition is intense but more focused than general Ph.D. programmes. Candidates with JRF qualification and a strong research proposal have the best chances of selection.
Ques. What research areas are available under Ph.D. in Pharmacy at CUSB?
Ans. The Department of Pharmacy at CUSB has faculty working in diverse research areas including pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics and drug delivery systems (including nanotechnology-based formulations), pharmacognosy and natural product research, pharmaceutical chemistry and drug design, and clinical pharmacy. Candidates are advised to check the faculty profiles on the CUSB website and contact potential supervisors before applying to ensure alignment of research interests.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Pharmacy at CUSB while working, or is it strictly full-time?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme at CUSB is a full-time residential programme. Scholars are expected to be present on campus, attend coursework in the first year, and conduct laboratory-based research under their supervisor. Part-time or distance Ph.D. is not offered by CUSB. However, scholars who receive JRF/SRF fellowships are expected to dedicate full time to research, and the fellowship itself is contingent on full-time enrolment and satisfactory progress reviews.
Ques. What happens after completing Ph.D. in Pharmacy from CUSB in terms of career prospects?
Ans. Ph.D. in Pharmacy from CUSB opens doors to academic positions (Assistant Professor in pharmacy colleges, which requires Ph.D. as per UGC norms), research scientist roles in pharmaceutical companies, positions in government research organisations like CSIR, ICMR, and DRDO, and postdoctoral fellowships in India and abroad. CUSB's central university status and its affiliation with national research networks (UGC, DST, DBT) provide scholars with strong credentials. Many CUSB pharmacy Ph.D. graduates have gone on to faculty positions in central and state universities across India.
