AMU B.A.LL.B. FAQs
Ques. Is the AMU BA LLB entrance exam very competitive, and what score is needed to get admission?
Ans. The AMU BA LLB entrance exam is quite competitive given the limited seats (120 at Aligarh campus) and the large number of applicants from across India. The exam is 100 marks (OMR-based, offline) with negative marking, covering General English, Current Affairs/GK, Reasoning and Aptitude, and Legal Awareness. While AMU does not officially publish cutoff scores, based on student experiences and forum discussions, a score of 60-70+ out of 100 is generally considered competitive for the Aligarh campus. The Malappuram and Murshidabad centres tend to have slightly lower competition. Candidates with strong legal awareness and current affairs preparation tend to perform better.
Ques. What is the difference between studying at the Aligarh campus versus the Malappuram or Murshidabad centres?
Ans. All three campuses (Aligarh, Malappuram, Murshidabad) offer the same B.A.LL.B. degree from Aligarh Muslim University with the same curriculum and examination system. However, the Aligarh campus is the main campus with better infrastructure, a larger library, more faculty, and stronger alumni networks. The Malappuram (Kerala) and Murshidabad (West Bengal) centres are off-campus centres with 60 seats each, offering a more regional focus. Students at all centres are eligible for AMU scholarships and can participate in university-level moot court competitions. The fee structure is similar across all centres, though the Murshidabad centre has been reported to have slightly lower annual fees.
Ques. Can I pursue judicial services after completing BA LLB from AMU, and how does the curriculum help?
Ans. Yes, the BA LLB programme at AMU is particularly well-suited for judicial services aspirants. The curriculum is aligned with the Uttar Pradesh Judiciary syllabus, covering subjects like Civil Procedure Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code, Evidence Act, and Constitutional Law in depth. Many AMU law graduates have successfully cleared UP PCS (J), Delhi Judicial Services, and other state judicial service examinations. The programme's focus on procedural law and substantive law provides a strong foundation. Students are advised to simultaneously prepare for judicial services during their 4th and 5th years of the programme.
Ques. What is the hostel situation for BA LLB students at AMU, and are hostels guaranteed?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at AMU is available but not guaranteed for all students. The university has separate halls of residence for male and female students. Hostel fees are very nominal - approximately Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 2,500 per year for the room, with separate mess charges of approximately Rs. 1,520 per month (inclusive of dining). The total hostel + mess cost for a year is approximately Rs. 20,000-25,000, making it extremely affordable compared to private institutions. However, hostel allotment is competitive and based on merit/distance from home. Day scholars (students not in hostels) pay slightly lower annual fees. Students from outside Aligarh are generally given priority for hostel allotment.
Ques. What are the career options after completing BA LLB from AMU, and how strong is the placement cell?
Ans. After completing BA LLB from AMU, graduates can pursue careers in litigation (as advocates in district courts, High Courts, or Supreme Court), judicial services (through state PCS-J exams), corporate law (joining law firms or in-house legal teams), government legal services (as legal officers in PSUs, ministries), or academia (by pursuing LLM and PhD). The placement cell at AMU Law is relatively nascent compared to NLUs, and major law firms do not regularly visit campus. However, the median package for placed students was Rs. 12.5 lakhs per annum (NIRF 2024), with companies like Amazon and other corporates offering roles. Most successful placements happen through alumni networks and self-driven internships at courts and law firms.
Ques. Is there any age limit for the AMU BA LLB entrance exam, and can working professionals apply?
Ans. Yes, there is an age limit for the AMU BA LLB programme. The maximum age is 22 years as of July 1 of the admission year for general category candidates. Age relaxation is provided for reserved category candidates as per AMU norms (typically 5 years for SC/ST/OBC and PwBD candidates). This means working professionals who are above 22 years of age (or 27 years for reserved categories) are generally not eligible for the BA LLB programme. Working professionals interested in a law degree should consider the 3-year LLB programme (after graduation) or the LLM programme at AMU instead.
