NIT Warangal B.Tech FAQs

Ques. Is Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal good for core engineering placements, or do most students end up in IT?

Ans. Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal has a healthy mix of both core and IT placements. In 2024-25, out of 97 placed students, a significant portion secured roles in core companies like ONGC, BHEL, L&T, Tata Motors, and Bosch, while others opted for software and analytics roles at companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and various MNCs. The average CTC was 12.57 LPA in 2024-25. Students interested in core engineering are advised to focus on GATE preparation alongside their degree, as PSU recruitment through GATE is a strong pathway for ME graduates from NIT Warangal.

Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required to get Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal?

Ans. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, the closing rank for Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal (Gender Neutral, Open category, Home State) was approximately in the range of 8,000-12,000 CRL, while for Other State candidates it was around 6,000-9,000 CRL. For OBC-NCL, the closing rank was around 3,000-5,000. These ranks vary each year depending on the number of applicants and paper difficulty, so candidates should check the official JoSAA opening and closing ranks on josaa.nic.in for the most accurate data.

Ques. What is the actual total cost of studying B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal for 4 years, including hostel?

Ans. The tuition and other fees for Open/EWS/OBC category students amount to Rs. ₹1,05,000 per semester, totalling Rs. ₹8,40,000 for 8 semesters. Hostel charges for 1st year (double occupancy) are Rs. ₹43,000 per semester, which includes a one-time caution deposit of Rs. ₹15,000. From 2nd year onwards, hostel charges are lower as the caution deposit is not repeated. Approximately, the total cost including hostel and mess for 4 years would be around Rs. ₹11-12 lakh for Open category students. SC/ST/PwD students pay only Rs. ₹42,500 per semester in fees (tuition is nil), making the total course fee Rs. ₹3,40,000 over 4 years.

Ques. Can I switch branches from Mechanical Engineering to CSE or ECE after the first year at NIT Warangal?

Ans. Yes, NIT Warangal does have a branch change policy after the first year. However, it is extremely competitive. Students need to be in the top 5-7% of their batch (based on CGPA after the first two semesters) and there must be a vacant seat in the desired branch. Given that CSE and ECE are the most sought-after branches, the CGPA cutoff for switching to these branches is typically very high (above 9.0 on a 10-point scale). Students are advised to focus on performing well in the first year if they wish to explore this option.

Ques. Does NIT Warangal offer any research or internship opportunities specifically for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering students?

Ans. Yes, NIT Warangal actively encourages undergraduate research through its various departmental labs and research centres. B.Tech ME students can apply for Summer Research Fellowships at IITs and IISc through programmes like SRFP (JNCASR) and SURGE (IIT Kanpur). The institute also has a dedicated Winter Internship Programme (WIP) for students. Additionally, the Mechanical Engineering department has collaborations with industries and research organisations, and students can pursue project internships in their 3rd and 4th years. GATE-qualified students from NIT Warangal also have strong prospects for M.Tech admissions at IITs.

Ques. What is the difference between the Home State (Telangana) and Other State quota for NIT Warangal Mechanical Engineering seats?

Ans. Under JoSAA norms, 50% of seats at NITs are reserved for candidates from the home state (Telangana for NIT Warangal) and 50% are for candidates from other states. For Mechanical Engineering with 129 total seats, approximately 64-65 seats fall under the Home State quota and 64-65 under the Other State quota. Home State candidates generally have a slightly higher closing rank (meaning a lower JEE rank is needed), while Other State candidates face tighter competition. The exact seat matrix is published on the JoSAA portal before each counselling cycle.
