What Students Say
Likes
- There were no strict guidelines over attendance during my entire course , if you maintain a healthy relation with your professors.
- The professors mostly provided us with suggestions and study materials before end semester examinations.
- You can have a bit of flexibility to pursue internships along side academics since overall pressure is less.
Dislikes
- Though professors are good few of them are moody and provide you with average or less marks.
- The overall processes of form fill-ups , scholarship related work , or other administrative stuff can get confusing or cumbersome due to lack of proactive employees in the system.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course specifically to build a career in the tech world , and this college because of it being a government university. The curriculum gives us descent knowledge of topics like DSA , OS , OOPS , DBMS , ML if we follow the lectures and take up additional lectures and materials alongside. I would suggest the curriculum can be refined by removing unnecessary topics from subjects and even subjects which have very less real world relevance. The frequency of examinations is perfect once a month or so. The difficulty level is easy - moderate most of the times and difficult in rare cases.
Placement Experience
from 6/7 th semester onwards students become eligible for campus placements. Infosys visited with around 22-23 offers , Cognizant visited with arount 15-16 offers , TCS visited with several offers(not sure how many) , that's it the big names. Apart from these small startups and companies visited too. Highest package offered was 11lpa by TCS , 9.6lpa by infosys, 6.48lpa by Cognizant. Profiles were ASE in TCS , PAT in CTS , SET in Infosys. The percentage of students placed was less arount 30-40% , mostly because the curriculum lacks placement prep. I have joined Cognizant as a Programmer Analyst Trainee after graduating .
Fees and Financial Aid
-> the year wise fees is around 47400 ( includes tution fee for even sem - 20000 , tution fee for odd sem - 25000 , exam fees for each sem - 1200 ) -> registration fees is 500 which is given during admission in the first sem itself . Admission fees is 5000 , no lab fees or library fees( only a fine of 3 rupee / day if late) , development fees of 2200 and caution money deposit of 8000. Most of these fees are one time . -> lateral entry students had to pay an extra of 5000 per semester for tution fees. Students who scored exceptionally well in the entrance exams and also if their household income is less than 400000 , they were given a tution fee waiver. -> State government scolarships like SVMCM were applicable in our university. -> the revised fees as of 2025 is as follows : Admission fee - 4000 , tution fee for odd sem - 27800 , tution fee for even sem - 25000 , library fee of 600 ( per sem ) and rest are same.
Campus Life
There's one extensive fest which happens in our campus called 'Anneswan' , which includes technical events like hackathons , exhibitions , competitions and cultural events having band performances , dance and musical evenings. The library has a lot of books and journals covering wide range of topics and subject areas. the classrooms have recently been installed with smartboards , mic systems which is impressive. Sport events like cricket tournament , football happen once or twice in a year along with a sports day having much more such events. There are several technical clubs in the university like Google developers students club (GDSC) , GFG club , HACKAUT etc.
Admission
I and my parents had decided that , I'll take admission in a good college within a feasible distance from my home in WB. So , I had applied to CS/IT branches in Jadavpur university , Government college of engineering and leather technology and MAKAUT . Out of these first I got selected in GCELT , later I got MAKAUT . I chose MAKAUT over the previous one because It had a bigger campus and better infrastructure . I got rejected from Jadavpur because of my rank of state rank of 3600... which is not enough for a general candidate to get into CS/IT branches of it. The admission process is straightforward. After getting selected through the counselling process you get an intimation from the university to visit the campus for document verification. The eligibility is you need to clear WBJEE exam with a decent rank and the cutoff depends on a lot of factors the difficulty of the exam , no. of students who appeared for it etc.
Faculty
Talking about the faculty-to-student ratio , its around 1:12 . The faculty are mostly good , if you're a bit punctual about assignments , class-assesments and attentive during lectures. The faculties are approachable . The best faculties according me are , Dr Sayantani Saha , Joy Samadder and Dr Somdatta chakroborty . I genuinely loved the way they used to teach us various topics , help us regarding various things and used to provide us a feedback on our exam answers. I won't say I disliked any faculty , because I believe if we behave well and be polite and respectful towards them , they help and support us a lot. There are 4 Class Assesments in each semester and one end semester exam . The questions are mostly prepared by the professors themselves who teach us the topic , hence with a bit of preparation we can clear them. Mostly all students clear , atleast in Btech IT . Students who fail mostly either don't study at all or get caught using unfair means during exams. The course is not that relevant according to the current industry requirements.
Interview Experience
No , there were no GD , Interviews or test for admission. The admission process involved only document verification which included WBJEE admit , aadhar card , 10th , 12th marksheets and fee payments. No preparation was needed for these rounds.
Night Life
Gym is present within the hostel itself and is available all day for the hostellers . Cafeteria is present and open till 6-7 pm in the evening , Library is open till 6pm , the public area stays open till late in the evening . I wasn't a hosteller so can't comment regarding it. Campus is open all day and till late night . There's no such famous places around , mostly we used to hangout in the nearby market and Kalyani or Kanchrapara markets. Its generally safe to roam , but I would suggest to stay in after 12am . There's also a police station and government hospital nearby.
