Course Curriculum Overview

4

I actually did not choose this course, I got admitted into this course according to the rank which I had secured in my JEE Mains exam. I have met many of my batchmates which are seriously passionate towards Mechanical Engineering and they are quite satisfied with the course curriculum here. The curriculum here has been updated this year and we are the first batch to follow the new curriculum and this one is way better than the previous one as this includes many practical skills also with the important theoritical part. The placement of the benches can be improved in a few classrooms and labs as sometimes, the board/screen is not visible from some parts of the classroom.

Internships Opportunities

4

Generally, the internship opportuinites are provided to the third year students and almost all of the major companies provide internship opportunities to the students and roles vary according to the CGPA of the respective student. All of the information related to the tasks and projects are communicated by the Training and Placement Cell of NIT Silchar.

Placement Experience

5

The placements here are actually decent. The average package for my branch was around 13.5 LPA last year and branches like CSE, EC and EI have a higher average package generally. The campus is visited by almost all of the top companies including Google, Adobe, Facebook, etc. The detailed placement records are available on the website of the institute. The percentage of students getting placed ranges anywhere between 70 percent to 92 percent. I plan to get an M.Tech degree after completing my B.Tech course from an IIT if possible.

Fees and Financial Aid

The tuition fees here will be varying according to the category and family income of the candidate. SC/ST students receive a hundred percent tuition fee waiver irrespective of their family income. If you belong to a different category, you will be paying the tuition fees according to your family income. If your family income is below 1 lakh per annum, you will be receiving a hundred percent tuition fee waiver but if your family income falls anywhere between 1 lakh and 1 rupee to 5 lakh per annum, you will be receiving a two third tution fee waiver which means that you will be paying only one third of the tuition fee which is my case too but if your family income is greater than 5 lakhs per annum, then you will need to pay 100% tuition fee and no waivers will be applicable for you. Irrespective of your category or family income, other fees which include the hostel fee, library fee, mess fee, etc. need to be paid and no waivers are provided. Scholarships are provided once you get admitted to your respective course. Few scholarship providers include NSP, Reliance, SBI, etc. The criterias for every scholarship is different which generally prefer on the basis of your category and family income. The fees of the institute in detail can be accessed on their website.

Campus Life

4

The college usually has a technical fest(Technoesis) which happens in every odd semester and also has a cultiral fest(Incandescence) that takes place in every even semester. NIT Silchar has an amazing library as the infrastructure of the library is very modern and it has a fully air conditioned space with storage space and decent speed wifi. The campus includes a football ground equipped with floodlights, a cricket ground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a gym and an indoor badminton court. There are several student- run clubs and socities which focus on different skills like Machine Learning, Coding, Dance, etc.

Hostel Facilities

4

I have been allocated "Aryabhatta Hostel" which was previously a hostel meant for post graduate students but is now given to first year students. First year students randomly get allocated into two hostels which include, "BH3" and "Aryabhatta" in which Aryabhatta is way better in terms of infrastructre as BH3 lacks an open space and has a very poorly maintained and ancient type infrastructure. However, BH3 has a better canteen than the Aryabhatta's one. Generally, the mess food in both of the hostels is same as the tender for the mess food is with the same company in both of the hostels. The hostel fees remains the same for both of the hostels and the detailed fee structure can be accessed on the official website of NIT Silchar.

Admission

I chose this college mainly due to its large campus and facilites and decent placements. This college has a great alumni network and has the best clubs and societies among top colleges and also organises one of the best fests. I could have got a better college but my rank didn't allow me to secure admission into the top ones. Our college only accepts JEE Mains score as the admission criteria. The cutoffs for my college vary according to the preferred branch and category of the student with their state of residence.

Faculty

4

The professors here are quite chill with the students and they try their best to make the concepts clear for the students. The number of faculties per subject is also quite great as some subjects have 5 to 6 different faculties for a single semester. I generally love the teaching style of Purushottam Sir who is the faculty in charge for the Mechanical Engineering branch. Sir teach very well and also make the students memorise everything that he had taught in his last class. There are a few faculties which I don't like but it will not be appropriate for me to take their names out as it may be for me that I don't like them but other students would be loving them. Each semester includes two main exams namely, Mid - semester exam and End - semester exam. There are other sessional tests, lab exams too which are scheduled by the respective faculties. The sessionals, lab exams , mid semester exams are quite easy but the end semester exam is quite moderate to tough. Generally, 15-20 students fail to clear the exam including all of the branches. The course curriculum is quite relative as the curriculum includes the important practical skills too other than the theoritical part.

Night Life

2

The night life here is not at all amazing as every shop and canteen inside the campus shuts after 9 PM and the only shop that is accessible at all times is outside the campus which only serves Maggi, tea and some breakfast options. I generally love to hangout near the Gymkhana Park and have some snacks from the fair price shop that is just in front of it.

From 5th sem students are allowed to participate in oncampus summar internship and from. 7th semester starting they are allowed for 6 month internship and Full time roles . There is a Training and placement Cell in our college there are some heads of this cell they are senior professors and it have final year students in senior coordinator position and 3 rd year study as probationary. Students bring the companies which fulfills the criteria of TNP cell and each company have their own eligibility criteria and selection procedure. Mostly companies allows 6 cgpa without any active backlog students . But some high paying companies requires 7 or more cgpa . In 3rd year Cisco , microsoft, public sapiens, Tech Mahindra, Accenture ,Oracle and many more companies visited in our campus and hired good amounts of students for summer internship and mostly offers full time role as ppo to students. In 4th year a lots of company like Novartis, amazon, flipkart, aditya birla, Cisco , Deloitte, oracle, ukg, Motorola, siemens , IBM and many more startups visited college and hired .Some paid 15+ CTC and some 6 to 10 CTC . Almost 40% of students are placed till December this year from each branch . Personally I'm planning for taking chances to get an online internship and then try to go for higher studies abroad in automation and robotics.
